Chapter 3 describes the application of target models to determination of detection probability. Chapter 4 examines how Meyer Plots can be used to solve problems involving most any target model.

The reliability of discrimination depends on the noise level, the back ground hash, the variation of echo with target aspect angles, the energy and shape of the transmitted pulse, and the number of pulses. The effect of each of these variables is calculated and discussed, leading to some new conclusions about optimal radar design and optimal data processing. We think that the tactics which might succeed are quite different from those that have been tried in the past, and give elementary intuitive explanations why this is so.

The proposed solution is to use radar magnitude and phase versus frequency data in the resonance region as input data for pattern recognition techniques. Practical methods are developed for measuring radar phase and dealing with polarization effects. Pattern recognition algorithms that optimize separation between pairs of input data are developed. These algorithms are based on digital spatial frequency filtering of curves of the radar return versus the radar frequency. The technique is simulated on a digital computer for three objects - a cylinder, a cone, and a step cylinder - all of about the same size. Results show that at most aspect angles, satisfactory recognition is attained at moderate signal-to-noise ratios.

Book excerpt: This report presents a review of the radar target identification problem with primary emphasis on practical solutions as opposed to abstract inverse scattering formalisms. A time domain viewpoint is stressed throughout because of its compactness, ease of visualization and diagnostic potential and because it is a unifying tool for various electromagnetic approximations. A small finite set of excitation invariant target descriptors, the coefficients of a linear, homogeneous difference equation, or equivalently the complex natural resonances, are justified as a discrimination tool. A prediction-correlation method for using these coefficients in identification is demonstrated. It is shown that substructure features of the targets, in this caes vertical and horizontal stabilizers of aircraft, possibly can be used as a discrimination feature and that the required interrogating radar signal spectrum for this case is significantly higher than that required for previous discrimination schemes using excitation invariant parameters. In this specific case, however, the target parameters do not have a simple physical interpretation. (Author).
