I have chosen the theories of Prof. Dr. Silvia Staub-Bernasconi and Prof. Dr. phil. Dr. Dres. h.c. Hans Thiersch. Silvia Staub-Bernasconi studied social work in Zurich and the USA, sociology, social psychology, pedagogy and social ethics at the University of Zurich and habilitated at the Technical University of Berlin. She was, among other things, Lecturer for Social Work and Human Rights at the University of Social Work in Zurich and the TU Berlin. Silvia Staub-Bernasconi coined the term social work as a human rights professional and also shaped the scientific understanding of social work as a science of action. She established theories for social work that were largely detached from the other works of great theorists such as Thiersch, Dewe/Otto and Bommes/Scherr (cf. Staub-Bernasconi, Soziale Arbeit als Handlungswissenschaft, Haupt Verlag, 2007). Hans Thiersch considers, among other things, in his theory on the "determination of the position of social work" (Hans Thiersch, 2002, Juventa Verlag Weinheim), the self-image of social work against the background of political constraints and economic interests. His individual activities and publications are so numerous and extensive that a list of them would go beyond the scope of this paper. He is considered the founder of the Tübingen School. His view of life-world orientation in social work influences the theories of Dewe/Otto and Bommes/Scherr. A clear demarcation of the two theories I have chosen is not completely possible, despite their independence. In the following, I will try to highlight serious differences as well as striking intersections and to critically examine their applicability in the socio-pedagogical field of inpatient and open and outreach work for children and young people.

Three approaches are used to analyse the case and then critically discussed. In this context, it seemed appropriate to choose a classical theory from the origins of social work. The approach of Alice Salomon, who can be regarded as a pioneer of the science of social work, serves this purpose. Complementing this, two important contemporary theories are also applied. The concept of "coping with life" by Lothar Böhnisch and the approach of "lifeworld orientation" by Hans Thiersch. These two theories were chosen because of their immense, structure-forming influence on social work. The framework of this work does not allow for the inclusion of other theories, which is why Silvia Staub-Bernasconi's systemic theory, for example, which undisputedly has a formative character in current theoretical discourses, is not applied in this work.

At the latest since the Eighth Youth Report, the so-called lifeworld orientation has been considered a central paradigm of youth welfare. Above all, the educator Hans Thiersch, who was also involved in the preparation of this report, coined the term "lifeworld orientation". The discussion of lifeworld-oriented social work was triggered by changes in society. Today, coping with everyday life requires many more preconditions, such as self- and social competence, assertiveness or self-confidence, than in earlier decades, when gender and generational roles, educational, health and nutritional concepts as well as career paths were still predetermined by stable traditions and social relations.

Especially in relation to the relationship between theory and practice, the question arises as to what extent and whether theories are necessary at all in social work. To put it bluntly, the raison d'être of social work as a science and course of study at universities is also called into question here. If theories are not needed at all, why should social work be represented as a science at universities? In this paper, I would therefore first like to deal with the concept of theory. Even though a general definition of the concept of theory in terms of scientific theory is difficult due to its complexity, an attempt will be made here to arrive at an initial understanding of the concept of theory. Based on this, we will then ask for criteria or definitions of theories of social work. The second part of this paper will then deal with a theory or a concept in the context of social work by way of example. The first question is about the basic assumptions of the concept of lifeworld orientation, its lines of tradition and its development. This is followed by a presentation of the dimensions represented within the concept of lifeworld orientation as well as the structural and action maxims on which lifeworld-oriented social work is based. Finally, before a brief concluding remark, the previously explained concept of lifeworld-oriented social work will be concretised using the example of social-pedagogical family assistance.

Is youth work as much a social practice as a non-formal educational one? Where does the balance between these two dimensions lie? What are the mutually enriching dimensions of these two fields in terms of their impact on young people’s lives? While most agree that youth work needs to be further defined as a practice or profession in itself and that the process of shaping its identity continues in different ways in different countries, it is clear that when it comes to a cross-sectoral perspective and youth work’s interaction with social work, the picture becomes significantly more complex, arguably much richer and certainly more dynamic than might have hitherto been foreseen.

Dazu hab ich mich zum einen für die Theorie der Sozialen Arbeit als Menschenrechtsprofession von Silvia Staub-Bernasconi entschieden und zum anderen wählte ich das Konzept der Lebensweltorientierung von Hans Thiersch. Hans Thiersch wurde 1935 in Recklinghausen geboren und absolvierte nach dem erfolgreichen Abschluss des Gymnasiums ein Studium in Philologie, Philosophie, Theologie und Pädagogik. Von 1961 bis 1967 war er schließlich als wissenschaftlicher Assistent an der Universität von Göttingen beschäftigt. Im Jahr 1962 promovierte Hans Thiersch zum Professor und wurde schließlich fünf Jahre später Professor an der Pädagogischen Hochschule in Kiel. 1970 verließ Hans Thiersch schließlich die Pädagogische Hochschule in Kiel und wechselte nach Tübingen, wo er bis zum Jahr 2002 in dem er emeritiert ist, als Professor am Institut für Erziehungswissenschaften tätig war. Hans Thiersch fokussiert in seiner Theorie der Lebensweltorientierung insbesondere die individuell erfahrene Lebenswelt im Alltag der Menschen und die damit zusammenhängenden Probleme, Ressourcen und die Versuche Raum, Zeit und soziale Beziehungen zu gestalten.
