Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Radical Theory in Chemistry IN this work I propose to prove that the laws of Organic Chemistry are as simple and orderly as the laws of Inorganic Chemistry, and that the confusion which prevails in the former is attributable in no degree to irregularity in organic com pounds, but to a disregard of the true laws of the science and a devotion to false hypotheses. The work includes a critical inquiry into the authority and importance of the doctrines which are commonly accepted by chemists as sound, and of others, which I recommend for adoption, as better proved and of more universal application. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wohler's Outlines of Organic Chemistry It is, therefore, natural that of late the attention of Americans should have been attracted towards this field; and there begin to be slight indications of a desire on their part to aid In clearing up its many mysteries, a work in which for some years the Ger mans have been engaged almost to the exclusion of the chemists of other countries. Should the publica tion of this work tend in the slightest degree to increase this desire, I shall feel that my labor has not been in vain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Organic Chemistry IN several respects this book is somewhat different from similar ones which are in general use at the present time. It is a combina tion of textbook and laboratory manual in which the theoretical discussions and the laboratory experiments are blended together. This arrangement encourages the student to consult the text while he is doing the experiments in the laboratory, with the result that he is more likely to perceive clearly the relation between the theory and the practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Organic Chemistry IN the writing of text-books of Organic Chemistry there are two distinct and incompatible systems. In the one, it is the practical aspect of the science which is kept in chief view in the other, its symmetry and homogeneity. The one constantly directs attention to detail the other approaches the subject with the desire of displaying its orderly principles and structural unity. The present writer adheres with conviction to the latter method. The reader of text-books based upon the practical point of view is apt, if he be a beginner, to lose the thread of the argument in the wealth of facts for the mass of information necessary for the proper comprehension of the main principles of organic chemistry is so great, that additional details hinder rather than assist the student in his laborious task of assimilation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Organic Chemistry: A Book Designed Especially for the General Student The present edition represents a thorough revision of the text in which, however, the original point of View has been strictly retained. The attempt has been made to have all statements accord strictly with the results of the latest and most reliable investigations, and the opportunity has been taken to introduce several topics of practical interest which had hitherto been omitted. Among these may be mentioned citric acid, the fulminates, the synthesis of india-rubber, and the chemistry of tannin. The chapter devoted to the com pounds of cyanogen has been brought more nearly in accord with modern technical practice, and that dealing with stereoisomerism has been largely rewritten in the interest of clearness. The author desires to express his thanks to all those who have called attention to inaccuracies or loose statements in the first edition, and hopes that he may rely upon them for similar favors in the future. He is especially indebted to his colleague, Professor W. T. Hall, for valuable assistance in reading the proofs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Advances in Organic Chemistry The excerpts from previous prefaces printed below will enable the reader to see the main ideas which have been kept in view since the inception of this book in 1908. The demand for a fourth edition within little more than a year after the publication of the third edition seems to show that this method of treating the subject has been acceptable to the chemical public. In writing a book such as this, several difficulties have to be 'avoided. In the first place, it is essential to ensure that the text does not degenerate into a mere series of arid abstracts of authors' papers, for nothing is duller than chemical pemmican. Secondly, since it may reasonably be assumed that some readers are not perfectly acquainted with the earlier history of every field of research described in the volume, it is necessary to provide a foundation upon Which the description of recent work can be based. For example, to restrict an account of the work done upon the terpenes to papers published only within the last three years would be to distort the whole perspective of the subject and render the book unreadable. The title, "Recent Advances," was purposely chosen so as to permit the inclusion of earlier work wherever this was necessary; and the words must not be interpreted as meaning that only the very latest papers in any branch will be described. In the third place, the limitations of space complicate the author's problem. Out of the many fields of interest which the subject contains, he has to make a selection, since otherwise the book would be too unwieldy. How is the process of selection to be carried out? In the present volume an attempt has been made to hold the balance evenly between the theory and the practice of the subject, so as to give as fair a representation of the whole field as possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Organic Chemistry As a teacher of organic chemistry, I have felt the want of a small book on the subject. There is no lack of dictionaries and encyclopaedic works on organic chemistry, but they are too large for use in a college course. The few shorter English text-books are not, so far as my experience goes, well suited for teaching. The following work, which has met with remarkable suc cess in Germany, and which the author, Prof. Pinner, has kindly given me permission to translate, is founded on the system of teaching developed by the distinguished chemist Prof. A. W. Hofmann, of Berlin, and in some cases follows his lectures quite closely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
