Book excerpt: Simultaneous Mass Transfer and Chemical Reactions in Engineering Science A comprehensive look at the basic science of diffusional process and mass transfer Mass transfer as a principle is an essential part of numerous unit operations in biomolecular, chemical, and process engineering; crystallization, distillation, and membrane separation processes, for example, use this important method. Given this significance – particularly in engineering design where these processes occur – understanding the design and analysis of such unit operations must begin with a basic understanding of how simultaneous mass transfer and the chemical reactions that influence these occurrences. It is also vital to be aware of the most up-to-date technologies for analyzing and predicting the phenomena. Given the significance of this process, Simultaneous Mass Transfer and Chemical Reactions in Engineering Science is an important resource as it introduces the reader to the complex subject of simultaneous mass transfer with biochemical and chemical reactions and gives them the tools to develop an applicable design. Analyzing the systems of simultaneous mass transfer and reactions is at the core of this book, as all known design approaches are carefully examined and compared. The volume also provides the reader with a working knowledge of the latest technologies – with a special focus on the open-sourced computer programming language R – and how these tools are an essential resource in quantitative assessment in analysis models. Simultaneous Mass Transfer and Chemical Reactions in Engineering Science provides a working knowledge of the latest information on simultaneous mass transfer and reactions by focusing on the analysis of this process, as well as discussing the existence and distinctive quality of the solutions to the Simultaneous Mass Transfer and Chemical Reactions in Engineering Science readers will also find: A theoretical basis of each design model that is carefully stated, compared, and assessed Carefully developed and established Existence and Uniqueness Theorems for a general design model Comprehensive coverage of how the programming language R may be used to analyze models Numerous examples and case studies that provide a working knowledge of simultaneous mass transfer and reactions Simultaneous Mass Transfer and Chemical Reactions in Engineering Science is a useful reference for students in chemical engineering, biotechnology, or chemistry, as well as professional process and chemical engineers.

Book excerpt: The phenomenon of "mass transfer with chemical reaction" takes place whenever one phase is brought into contact with one or more other phases not in chemical equilibrium with it. This phenomenon has industrial, biological and physiological importance. In chemical process engineering, it is encountered in both separ ation processes and reaction engineering. In some cases, a chemical reaction may deliberately be employed for speeding up the rate of mass transfer and/or for increasing the capacity of the solvent; in other cases the multiphase reaction system is a part of the process with the specific aim of product formation. Finally, in some cases, for instance "distillation with chemical reaction", both objectives are involved. Although the subject is clearly a chemical engineering undertakin~, it requires often a good understanding of other subjects, such as chemistry and fluid mechanics etc., leading to publications in diversified areas. On the other har.d, the subject has always been a major field and one of the most fruitful for chemical engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surveyed in this book are the kinetics of non-linear mass transfer and its effects on hydrodynamic stability in systems with intensive interphase mass transfer, in electrochemical systems with high current density and in chemically reacting systems. In Part 1 the non-linear mass transfer as a result of an intensive interphase mass transfer in the gas (liquid)-solid surface, gas-liquid and liquid-liquid systems is considered in the duffusion boundary layer approximation as well as in flat channel taking the longitudinal diffusion into account. The influence of the direction of the intensive interphase mass transfer on heat transfer and multi-component mass transfer is illustrated. Part 2 discusses non-linear mass transfer in electrochemical systems with high current density using the examples of the anode dissolving of metals in the electrolyte flow and the electro-separation of metals out of concentrated solutions. The theory of the measured electrochemical treatment of metals and alloys, which is a method of wide practical use, has been elaborated on this basis. In Part 3 the non-linear mass transfer in chemically reacting systems is considered in the cases of: non-linearity of the equations of the chemical reaction's kinetics and intensive interphase mass transfer or thermo-capillary effect due to chemical reactions. On this basis, the mechanisms and the macro-kinetics of the chemical transformations in the gas-liquid systems are discussed. Part 4 is dedicated to the chemical reaction kinetics in stationary two phase systems at an arbitrary contact time between phases. In Part 5 the effects of concentration gradients are considered in the approximations of the linear theory of the hydrodynamic stability of almost parallel flows. In systems with intensive interphase mass transfer, the Marangoni effect could also be observed, beside the effect of non-linear mass transfer. A comparative analysis of both effects is made in this book.

Diffusion is a key part of the undergraduate chemical engineering curriculum and at the core of understanding chemical purification and reaction engineering. This spontaneous mixing process is also central to our daily lives, with importance in phenomena as diverse as the dispersal of pollutants to digestion in the small intestine. For students, Diffusion goes from the basics of mass transfer and diffusion itself, with strong support through worked examples and a range of student questions. It also takes the reader right through to the cutting edge of our understanding, and the new examples in this third edition will appeal to professional scientists and engineers. Retaining the trademark enthusiastic style, the broad coverage now extends to biology and medicine.

Book excerpt: Multicomponent Diffusion discusses the multicomponent diffusion of the three phases of matter. The book is comprised of nine chapters that cover studies of multicomponent diffusion and mass transfer with an emphasis on the chemical characteristics responsible for multicomponent diffusion. Chapter 1 provides an introductory discourse about multicomponent diffusion. Chapter 2 discusses binary diffusion, while Chapter 3 covers multicomponent flux equation. The measurement of ternary diffusion and the estimation of ternary diffusion coefficients are also explained in the book. A chapter then covers the interacting systems, and the subsequent chapter talks about membranes without mobile carriers. The text also discusses carrier-containing membranes and the multicomponent mass transfer. The book will be of great use to researchers and professionals whose work requires a good understanding of multicomponent diffusion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new approach for the modeling of chemical and interphase mass transfer processes in industrial column apparatuses, using convection-diffusion and average-concentration models. The convection-diffusion type models are used for a qualitative analysis of the processes and to assess the main, small and slight physical effects, and then reject the slight effects. As a result, the process mechanism can be identified. It also introduces average concentration models for quantitative analysis, which use the average values of the velocity and concentration over the cross-sectional area of the column. The new models are used to analyze different processes (simple and complex chemical reactions, absorption, adsorption and catalytic reactions), and make it possible to model the processes of gas purification with sulfur dioxide, which form the basis of several patents.

Book excerpt: This book presents a new computational methodology called Computational Mass Transfer (CMT). It offers an approach to rigorously simulating the mass, heat and momentum transfer under turbulent flow conditions with the help of two newly published models, namely the C’2—εC’ model and the Reynolds mass flux model, especially with regard to predictions of concentration, temperature and velocity distributions in chemical and related processes. The book will also allow readers to understand the interfacial phenomena accompanying the mass transfer process and methods for modeling the interfacial effect, such as the influences of Marangoni convection and Rayleigh convection. The CMT methodology is demonstrated by means of its applications to typical separation and chemical reaction processes and equipment, including distillation, absorption, adsorption and chemical reactors. Professor Kuo-Tsong Yu is a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Xigang Yuan is a Professor at the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Tianjin University, China.
