Book excerpt: Aqueous amine-based chemical scrubbing has been considered the most promising near-term solution for CO2 capture from flue gas, yet the underlying reaction mechanisms are still not fully understood. Moreover, its widespread implementation is hindered by the high cost associated with the parasitic energy consumption during solvent regeneration, along with degradation and corrosion problems. First-principles-based atomistic modeling can play a significant role in elucidating the complex physicochemical phenomena underlying CO2 reaction-diffusion behavior in aqueous amine-based solvent, especially when direct experimental characterization at the atomic level may be difficult. An improved fundamental understanding of these reaction mechanisms and intermolecular interactions can be used to provide explanations for experimental observations and fundamental data, and improve kinetic and thermodynamic models for process optimization. Here, our recent theoretical works on the molecular mechanisms underlying CO2 capture and solvent regeneration in aqueous amines are presented. Through systematic comparative analyses of primary, tertiary, and sterically hindered amines, and diamines, we provide significant insights into how the mechanisms and rates of competing CO2 absorption routes can be influenced by the solvent structure, the relative strengths of intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions, and steric constraints. We also use a theoretical approach to examine the mechanisms occurring during thermal degradation, as well as the process underlying leaching of metal ions into solution due to corrosion and subsequent oxidative degradation, which remain unclear. These studies further demonstrate the importance of a detailed atomic-level description of the solution structure and dynamics to describe the reactions and in predicting the thermodynamic and kinetic properties in CO2-loaded aqueous amines. Moreover, an accurate description of solvent composition near the gas interface and near the iron surface is critical in predicting the CO2 capture and corrosion processes, respectively. This dissertation highlights the increasingly important role of first-principles-based computer simulations in the detailed mechanistic study of CO2 capture by amine-based solvents, including solvent degradation and corrosion processes. The improved understanding gained from computational studies combined with experiment validations will greatly aid in the design and development of new solvents and inhibitors in efforts to improve the efficiency of commercial-scale applications

However, its extensive operation is severely limited by the large cost attributed to the enormous energy requirement for solvent regeneration and degradation issues leading to makeup of amine solvent loss. First-principles atomistic modeling can provide key insights into elucidating chemical phenomena pertinent to degradation behavior in CO2-loaded aqueous amine solution, which is often extremely challenging to be experimentally characterized. In this dissertation, our first-principles works on illuminating the molecular mechanisms governing solvent degradation of aqueous amine during CO2 capture are presented. Using density functional theory based ab initio molecular dynamics with enhanced sampling techniques, we identify elementary reactions governing CO2 capture and degradation. Molecular mechanisms of thermal and oxidative degradation of aqueous amine solvents are discussed in perspective of both thermodynamics and kinetics. We systematically investigate on the factors prevailing key reaction rates, such as amine functional groups, the steric hindrances, classes of amines (primary and secondary), concentration of amines, solvation nature, and temperature conditions. These factors may largely affect relative strengths of both inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bond interactions in CO2-loaded aqueous amine solution. Our theoretical studies further illustrate the importance of an atomistic-level description of solvation structure and dynamics that may primarily govern CO2 reaction with aqueous amine solvents and associated degradation mechanisms. This dissertation highlights the key role of first-principles computational modelling in accurately describing mechanistic understandings on CO2 capture by aqueous amine solvents and associated degradation processes. The enhanced atomisticlevel descriptions will provide more complete explanations for experimental characterizations and valuable suggestions on how to optimize existing solvents and design more cost-efficient solvents for carbon capture processes

It is therefore imperative to reduce the amount of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. Among CO2 capture sorbents, liquid amines have been used commercially as they have high capacities for CO2 as well as fast reaction rates. The purpose of this research work is to screen novel promising amines which can be used at an industrial scale for CO2 capture from natural as well as flue gas streams. Ideally, potential amines should have a high kinetic rate, high CO2 solubility and low regeneration energy. The selected amines in this research work have multiple amino groups including coupled primary and tertiary amino groups in their structures. The amines were tested experimentally by measuring their capacities to absorb CO2, their kinetics rates, their dissociation constants, derived heat of absorption and finally their volumetric and transport properties. Dissociation constants (pKas) of four amines namely 1,4-Bis(3-aminopropyl) piperazine, 1, 3-Bis(aminomethyl) cyclohexane, Tris(2-aminoethyl) amine and 1-Amino-4-methyl piperazine were determined in the temperature range from 288.15K to 333.15K for the first, second and third amino groups. Values of dissociation constant can reflect the reaction rate or kinetic of the amines with CO2. Data for the dissociation constant at different temperatures and solubility data can be used in thermodynamic modelling. In addition, as the molecular structure of 1-Amino-4-methyl piperazine, a polyamine, is asymmetric, the order of reaction between these amino groups was predicted using computational chemistry calculations. Computational chemistry calculations were used to estimate the dissociation constants and compare the obtained values to experimental data. In this molecular modelling work, an implicit - explicit model with a variation of the number of water molecules has been applied to examine the effect of water on the accuracy of the calculations. Furthermore, different levels of theory, methods and basis sets were used to calculate the effect of each on the prediction. Volumetric studies of 1,4-Bis(3-aminopropyl) piperazine and 1, 3-Bis(aminomethyl) cyclohexane were also performed which include the measurements of the density and speed of sound of binary mixtures between the amines and water at the full range of mole fractions and at temperatures varying from 293.15K to 343.15K. Viscosities of the aqueous solutions were measured from 298.15K to 343.15K. Finally, the refractive indexes of the amine solutions were also determined from 273.15K to 343.15K. A kinetics study was performed using the stopped-flow technique to measure the rates of reaction. Measurements were performed at different amine concentrations and temperatures. The results of the study show that three amines namely [1,4-Bis(3-aminopropyl) piperazine, 1, 3-Bis(aminomethyl) cyclohexane, Tris(2-aminoethyl) amine] reacted with CO2 much faster than some commonly used amines such as Monoethanolamine (MEA) or Piperazine (PZ). To simulate the CO2-amine-water system using a thermodynamic model CO2 solubility in the aqueous amine solutions was measured at different amine concentrations, temperatures and CO2 partial pressures. Solubility data in 1,4-Bis(3-aminopropyl) piperazine, 1,3-Bis(aminomethyl) cyclohexane and 1-Amino-4-methyl piperazine were measured and compared and the solvent with the best performance was selected for the measurement of heat of reaction with CO2. Data were modelled with the electrolyte Non-Random Two-Liquid (elect-NRTL) model. The heat of reaction of CO2 in an aqueous solution of 1,4-Bis(3-aminopropyl) piperazine at different temperatures, pressures and CO2 partial pressures were measured. The heats of reaction of 2-(Butylamino) ethanol (secondary amine) were measured and compared that to those obtained for 1,4-Bis(3-aminopropyl) piperazine.

Book excerpt: To achieve goals for climate and economic growth, "negative emissions technologies" (NETs) that remove and sequester carbon dioxide from the air will need to play a significant role in mitigating climate change. Unlike carbon capture and storage technologies that remove carbon dioxide emissions directly from large point sources such as coal power plants, NETs remove carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere or enhance natural carbon sinks. Storing the carbon dioxide from NETs has the same impact on the atmosphere and climate as simultaneously preventing an equal amount of carbon dioxide from being emitted. Recent analyses found that deploying NETs may be less expensive and less disruptive than reducing some emissions, such as a substantial portion of agricultural and land-use emissions and some transportation emissions. In 2015, the National Academies published Climate Intervention: Carbon Dioxide Removal and Reliable Sequestration, which described and initially assessed NETs and sequestration technologies. This report acknowledged the relative paucity of research on NETs and recommended development of a research agenda that covers all aspects of NETs from fundamental science to full-scale deployment. To address this need, Negative Emissions Technologies and Reliable Sequestration: A Research Agenda assesses the benefits, risks, and "sustainable scale potential" for NETs and sequestration. This report also defines the essential components of a research and development program, including its estimated costs and potential impact.
