Book Synopsis An Introduction to Regge Theory and High Energy Physics by : P. D. B. Collins
Download or read book An Introduction to Regge Theory and High Energy Physics written by P. D. B. Collins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-05-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1977, this book presents an extended introduction to the theory of hadrons, the elementary particles which occur in the atomic nucleus. The main emphasis is on the theory of the complex angular momentum plane 'Regge theory', which has grown from Regge's demonstration in 1959 that it is useful to regard angular momentum as a complex variable when discussing solutions of the Schrodinger equation for non-relativistic potential scattering. This theory helps to classify the many different particles which have been discovered in recent years, to explain the forces between these particles and to predict the results of high-energy scattering experiments. Regge theory thus serves as a unifying concept drawing together many different features of high-energy physics. This monograph is intended primarily for research students just beginning to concern themselves with particle physics, but more experienced workers will also find much to interest them in this detailed survey of the basic ideas and results of Regge theory.
Book Synopsis Introduction to High Energy Physics by : Donald H. Perkins
Download or read book Introduction to High Energy Physics written by Donald H. Perkins and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-13 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly-regarded text provides a comprehensive introduction to modern particle physics. Extensively rewritten and updated, this 4th edition includes developments in elementary particle physics, as well as its connections with cosmology and astrophysics. As in previous editions, the balance between experiment and theory is continually emphasised. The stress is on the phenomenological approach and basic theoretical concepts rather than rigorous mathematical detail. Short descriptions are given of some of the key experiments in the field, and how they have influenced our thinking. Although most of the material is presented in the context of the Standard Model of quarks and leptons, the shortcomings of this model and new physics beyond its compass (such as supersymmetry, neutrino mass and oscillations, GUTs and superstrings) are also discussed. The text includes many problems and a detailed and annotated further reading list.

Book Synopsis Group Theory for the Standard Model of Particle Physics and Beyond by : Ken J. Barnes
Download or read book Group Theory for the Standard Model of Particle Physics and Beyond written by Ken J. Barnes and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-03-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the author’s well-established courses, Group Theory for the Standard Model of Particle Physics and Beyond explores the use of symmetries through descriptions of the techniques of Lie groups and Lie algebras. The text develops the models, theoretical framework, and mathematical tools to understand these symmetries. After linking symmetries with conservation laws, the book works through the mathematics of angular momentum and extends operators and functions of classical mechanics to quantum mechanics. It then covers the mathematical framework for special relativity and the internal symmetries of the standard model of elementary particle physics. In the chapter on Noether’s theorem, the author explains how Lagrangian formalism provides a natural framework for the quantum mechanical interpretation of symmetry principles. He then examines electromagnetic, weak, and strong interactions; spontaneous symmetry breaking; the elusive Higgs boson; and supersymmetry. He also introduces new techniques based on extending space–time into dimensions described by anticommuting coordinates. Designed for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in physics, this text provides succinct yet complete coverage of the group theory of the symmetries of the standard model of elementary particle physics. It will help students understand current knowledge about the standard model as well as the physics that potentially lies beyond the standard model.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although group theory has played a significant role in the development of various disciplines of physics, there are few recent books that start from the beginning and then build on to consider applications of group theory from the point of view of high energy physicists. Group Theory for High Energy Physicists fills that role. It presents groups, e
Book Synopsis The Landscape of Theoretical Physics: A Global View by : M. Pavsic
Download or read book The Landscape of Theoretical Physics: A Global View written by M. Pavsic and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-11-30 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today many important directions of research are being pursued more or less independently of each other. These are, for instance, strings and mem branes, induced gravity, embedding of spacetime into a higher dimensional space, the brane world scenario, the quantum theory in curved spaces, Fock Schwinger proper time formalism, parametrized relativistic quantum the ory, quantum gravity, wormholes and the problem of “time machines”, spin and supersymmetry, geometric calculus based on Clifford algebra, various interpretations of quantum mechanics including the Everett interpretation, and the recent important approach known as “decoherence”. A big problem, as I see it, is that various people thoroughly investigate their narrow field without being aware of certain very close relations to other fields of research. What we need now is not only to see the trees but also the forest. In the present book I intend to do just that: to carry out a first approximation to a synthesis of the related fundamental theories of physics. I sincerely hope that such a book will be useful to physicists. From a certain viewpoint the book could be considered as a course in the oretical physics in which the foundations of all those relevant fundamental theories and concepts are attempted to be thoroughly reviewed. Unsolved problems and paradoxes are pointed out. I show that most of those ap proaches have a common basis in the theory of unconstrained membranes. The very interesting and important concept of membrane space, the tensor calculus in and functional transformations in are discussed.

Book Synopsis Surveys in Theoretical High Energy Physics - 2 by : Raghavan Rangarajan
Download or read book Surveys in Theoretical High Energy Physics - 2 written by Raghavan Rangarajan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-13 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents pedagogical reviews of important topics on high energy physics to the students and researchers in particle physics. The book also discusses topics on the Quark–Gluon plasma, thermal field theory, perturbative quantum chromodynamics, anomalies and cosmology. Students of particle physics need to be well-equipped with basic understanding of many concepts underlying the standard models of particle physics and cosmology. This is particularly true today when experimental results from colliders, such as large hadron collider (LHC) and relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC), as well as inferences from cosmological observations, are expected to further expand our understanding of particle physics at high energies. This volume is the second in the Surveys in Theoretical High Energy Physics Series (SThEP). Topics covered in this book are based on lectures delivered at the SERC Schools in Theoretical High Energy Physics at the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, and the University of Hyderabad.
Book Synopsis Gauge Theory of Elementary Particle Physics by : Ta-Pei Cheng
Download or read book Gauge Theory of Elementary Particle Physics written by Ta-Pei Cheng and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-08-02 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a practical introduction to the principal ideas in gauge theory and their applications to elementary particle physics. It explains technique and methodology with simple exposition backed up by many illustrative examples. Derivations, some of well known results, are presented in sufficient detail to make the text accessible to readers entering the field for the first time. The book focuses on the strong interaction theory of quantum chromodynamics and the electroweak interaction theory of Glashow, Weinberg, and Salam, as well as the grand unification theory, exemplified by the simplest SU(5) model. Not intended as an exhaustive survey, the book nevertheless provides the general background necessary for a serious student who wishes to specialize in the field of elementary particle theory. Physicists with an interest in general aspects of gauge theory will also find the book highly useful.

Book Synopsis Theory and Phenomenology of Sparticles by : Manuel Drees
Download or read book Theory and Phenomenology of Sparticles written by Manuel Drees and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005-01-18 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supersymmetry or SUSY, one of the most beautiful recent ideas of physics, predicts sparticles existing as superpartners of particles. This book gives a theoretical and phenomenological account of sparticles. Starting from a basic level, it provides a comprehensive, pedagogical and user-friendly treatment of the subject of four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry as well as its observational aspects in high energy physics and cosmology. Part One of the book introduces the requisite formal theory, preceded by a discussion of the naturalness problem. Part Two describes the supersymmetrization of the Standard Model of particle interactions as well as the origin of soft supersymmetry breaking and how it can be mediated from higher energies. Search strategies for sparticles, supersymmetric Higgs bosons, nonminimal scenarios and cosmological implications are some of the other topics covered. Novel features of the book include a dictionary between two-component and four-component spinor notation, a step-by-step derivation of the nonrenormalization theorem, an extended discussion of supersymmetric renormalization group evolution, detailed analyses of minimal and nonminimal models with gravity (including anomaly) mediated and gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking as well as elaborate self-contained presentations of collider signals of sparticles plus supersymmetric Higgs bosons and of supersymmetric cosmology. Appendices list all Feynman rules for the vertices of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Keywords:Reviews: “I find the book very attractive and very useful at this time. There are not so many up-to-date books for the LHC phenomenology.” G Altarelli CERN “It seeks to be the complete primer on supersymmetry for the theorist, phenomenologist and experimentalist. The presentation is lucid throughout and the notation is well-chosen. This is a highly recommended book for the student of particle physics who has studied the basics of quantum field theory and the phenomenon of the known elementary particles. In addition, it is a handy source of information (and most valuably, explanations) for senior students and practicing physicists in other areas, who will increasingly feel the need to know about the area of fundamental science most finely poised for a dramatic experimental breakthrough.” Current Science “… very informative book on supersymmetric particles …” Professor Barry Barish California Institute of Technology “Very good text. Although suitable for those who want to begin working in the field, nonexperts can get substantial insights into the goals and motivation behind the theory by browsing through. The book begins with a good pedagogical treatment of the superspace formalism and ends with an extensive summary of Feynman rules. About 300 pages cover the phenomenology of supersymmetry — from colliders to dark matter — with significant discussion of supersymmetry breaking and a 30-page chapter on supersymmetric Higgs bosons.” Physics Today

Book Synopsis String Theory and the Scientific Method by : Richard Dawid
Download or read book String Theory and the Scientific Method written by Richard Dawid and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: String theory has played a highly influential role in theoretical physics for nearly three decades and has substantially altered our view of the elementary building principles of the Universe. However, the theory remains empirically unconfirmed, and is expected to remain so for the foreseeable future. So why do string theorists have such a strong belief in their theory? This book explores this question, offering a novel insight into the nature of theory assessment itself. Dawid approaches the topic from a unique position, having extensive experience in both philosophy and high-energy physics. He argues that string theory is just the most conspicuous example of a number of theories in high-energy physics where non-empirical theory assessment has an important part to play. Aimed at physicists and philosophers of science, the book does not use mathematical formalism and explains most technical terms.
