Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David F. Hendry is a seminal figure in modern econometrics. He has pioneered the LSE approach to econometrics, and his influence is wide ranging. This book is a collection of papers dedicated to him and his work. Many internationally renowned econometricians who have collaborated with Hendry or have been influenced by his research have contributed to this volume, which provides a reflection on the recent advances in econometrics and considers the future progress for the methodology of econometrics. Central themes of the book include dynamic modelling and the properties of time series data, model selection and model evaluation, forecasting, policy analysis, exogeneity and causality, and encompassing. The book strikes a balance between econometric theory and empirical work, and demonstrates the influence that Hendry's research has had on the direction of modern econometrics. Contributors include: Karim Abadir, Anindya Banerjee, Gunnar Bårdsen, Andreas Beyer, Mike Clements, James Davidson, Juan Dolado, Jurgen Doornik, Robert Engle, Neil Ericsson, Jesus Gonzalo, Clive Granger, David Hendry, Kevin Hoover, Søren Johansen, Katarina Juselius, Steven Kamin, Pauline Kennedy, Maozu Lu, Massimiliano Marcellino, Laura Mayoral, Grayham Mizon, Bent Nielsen, Ragnor Nymoen, Jim Stock, Pravin Trivedi, Paolo Paruolo, Mark Watson, Hal White, and David Zimmer.

Book excerpt: Interpreting statistical data as evidence, Statistical Evidence: A Likelihood Paradigm focuses on the law of likelihood, fundamental to solving many of the problems associated with interpreting data in this way. Statistics has long neglected this principle, resulting in a seriously defective methodology. This book redresses the balance, explaining why science has clung to a defective methodology despite its well-known defects. After examining the strengths and weaknesses of the work of Neyman and Pearson and the Fisher paradigm, the author proposes an alternative paradigm which provides, in the law of likelihood, the explicit concept of evidence missing from the other paradigms. At the same time, this new paradigm retains the elements of objective measurement and control of the frequency of misleading results, features which made the old paradigms so important to science. The likelihood paradigm leads to statistical methods that have a compelling rationale and an elegant simplicity, no longer forcing the reader to choose between frequentist and Bayesian statistics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, revised edition of a yet unrivaled work on frequency domain analysis Long recognized for his unique focus on frequency domain methods for the analysis of time series data as well as for his applied, easy-to-understand approach, Peter Bloomfield brings his well-known 1976 work thoroughly up to date. With a minimum of mathematics and an engaging, highly rewarding style, Bloomfield provides in-depth discussions of harmonic regression, harmonic analysis, complex demodulation, and spectrum analysis. All methods are clearly illustrated using examples of specific data sets, while ample exercises acquaint readers with Fourier analysis and its applications. The Second Edition: * Devotes an entire chapter to complex demodulation * Treats harmonic regression in two separate chapters * Features a more succinct discussion of the fast Fourier transform * Uses S-PLUS commands (replacing FORTRAN) to accommodate programming needs and graphic flexibility * Includes Web addresses for all time series data used in the examples An invaluable reference for statisticians seeking to expand their understanding of frequency domain methods, Fourier Analysis of Time Series, Second Edition also provides easy access to sophisticated statistical tools for scientists and professionals in such areas as atmospheric science, oceanography, climatology, and biology.

Book excerpt: We characterize the LSE approach by its implications for reduced-form modeling and structural interpretations. Much of what has come to be associated with the LSE methodology involves the approach to fitting reduced forms samples plagued by serial correlation. The policy analysis one might be able to do with an "LSE model," on the other hand, hinges on structural identification arguments which do not meet the classic Cowles Commission standards, and is thus suspect.

Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of the 10th Conference on Theory and Applications of Soft Computing, Computing with Words and Perceptions, ICSCCW 2019, held in Prague, Czech Republic, on August 27–28, 2019. It includes contributions from diverse areas of soft computing and computing with words, such as uncertain computation, decision-making under imperfect information, neuro-fuzzy approaches, deep learning, natural language processing, and others. The topics of the papers include theory and applications of soft computing, information granulation, computing with words, computing with perceptions, image processing with soft computing, probabilistic reasoning, intelligent control, machine learning, fuzzy logic in data analytics and data mining, evolutionary computing, chaotic systems, soft computing in business, economics and finance, fuzzy logic and soft computing in earth sciences, fuzzy logic and soft computing in engineering, fuzzy logic and soft computing in material sciences, soft computing in medicine, biomedical engineering, and pharmaceutical sciences. Showcasing new ideas in the field of theories of soft computing and computing with words and their applications in economics, business, industry, education, medicine, earth sciences, and other fields, it promotes the development and implementation of these paradigms in various real-world contexts. This book is a useful guide for academics, practitioners and graduates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been much talk in the popular press about the difficulty of attaining credibility in the bond markets for the low-inflation policies that have been adopted by a number of central banks in recent years. This credibility problem is particularly severe for those countries that have a history of high inflation. Gaining credibility is often viewed in the context of learning by the public about the central bank's true intentions. However, this paper argues that a more important aspect of credibility at least for long-term inflation expectations may be public views about how future changes in personnel, electoral results, or economic shocks may affect central bank behaviour. In other words, there is always a positive probability that the current regime will end. Views about the nature of possible future regimes are likely to be influenced by observed past regimes.
