Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrodeposition is a fascinating electrochemical phenomenon that contains deep physical insights and has broad practical applications. At the heart of the physics governing electrodeposition is a competition between a destabilizing force caused by surface crests growing more rapidly than surface troughs in a positive feedback loop and a stabilizing force arising from surface energy effects that prevent the surface from roughening excessively. The physical manifestation of this surface instability is the formation and propagation of dendrites. Some applications of electrodeposition include electroplating of metals such as copper and charging of next-generation high-energy-density metal batteries such as lithium metal batteries. From both theoretical and practical standpoints, it is important to understand how to control and exploit electrode-position. In this thesis, we explore electrodeposition in a homogenized charged porous medium that contains a fixed background charge density, which affords us a new knob for controlling electrodeposition. In practice, such a background charge density can either naturally arise from ionization of surface functional groups or be generated through experimental techniques such as layer-by-layer deposition of polyelectrolytes on the pore surfaces. We investigate the theoretical aspects of electrodeposition in charged porous media in three different ways. First, we introduce a simple transport model that accounts for the background charge density and couple it with electrochemical reaction kinetics for electrodeposition. We then validate the coupled model by comparing predicted steady state current-voltage relations and linear sweep voltammetry with experimental data for copper electrodeposition in a variety of nanoporous media. Second, we perform linear stability analysis on the model to understand how key system parameters such as the background charge density affect the linear stability of the metal surface. We then show good agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental observations of the critical and instability wavelengths for copper electrodeposition in cellulose nitrate membranes. Third, we carry out impedance analysis on the model and explain some intriguing features in the experimental impedance spectra for copper electrodeposition in anodic aluminum oxide membranes. Through these three different types of analysis, we demonstrate the predictive power and robustness of the theory despite its simplicity

Book excerpt: Theory of Electrophoresis and Diffusiophoresis of Highly Charged Colloidal Particles discusses the electrophoretic and diffusiophoretic motions of various colloidal entities, such as rigid particles, liquid droplets, gas bubbles, and porous particles, focusing on the motion-deterring double-layer polarization effect pertinent to highly charged particles, with the lowly charged ones serving as the limiting cases. Boundary effects such as those from a cylindrical pore, a solid plane, or an air-water interface are analyzed as well for the electrophoretic motion of the various particles considered. Dynamic electrophoresis is also explored and treated. The contents are suitable for researchers, graduate students, or senior college students with some basic background of colloid science and transport phenomena. As there is no closed-form analytical formula in general for the situation of highly charged particles, the results are presented with extensive figures and plots as well as tables under various electrokinetic situations of interest to facilitate the possible use of interested readers. Provides a reliable quantitative prediction of highly charged particles motion with easy-to-apply charts and in-depth understanding of the underlying mechanisms Offers an extensive treatment of direct quantitative predication for non-rigid systems, such as porous particles, liquid drops, and gels, which is especially valuable in proteins and DNA research Discusses highly charged systems with a nearby boundary of practical interests, such as a pore, a solid plane, or an air-water interface, which is of vital interest in fields such as microfluidic operations and biomedical engineering Affords special attention to the polarization effect

Book excerpt: Electrochemistry of Porous Materials describes essential theoretical aspects of the electrochemistry of nanostructured materials and primary applications, incorporating the advances in the field in the last ten years including recent theoretical formulations and the incorporation of novel materials. Concentrating on nanostructured micro- and mesoporous materials, the highly anticipated Second Edition offers a more focused and practical analysis of key porous materials considered relatively homogeneous from an electrochemical point of view. The author details the use of electrochemical methods in materials science for characterization and their applications in the fields of analysis, energy production and storage, environmental remediation, and the biomedical arena. Additional features include: Incorporates new theoretical advances in the voltammetry of porous materials and multiphase porous electrochemistry. Includes new developments in sensing, energy production and storage, degradation of pollutants, desalination and drug release. Describes redox processes for different porous materials, assessing their electrochemical applications. Written at an accessible and understandable level for researchers and graduate students working in the field of material chemistry. Selective and streamlined, Electrochemistry of Porous Materials, Second Edition culls a wide range of relevant and practically useful material from the extensive literature on the subject, making it an invaluable reference for readers of all levels of understanding.

Book excerpt: The present volume offers a state-of-the-art report on the various recent sci entific developments in the Theory of Porous Media (TPM) comprehending the basic theoretical concepts in continuum mechanics on porous and mul tiphasic materials as well as the wide range of experimental and numerical applications. Following this, the volume does not only address the sophisti cated reader but also the interested beginner in the area of Porous Media by presenting a collection of articles. These articles written by experts in the field concern the fundamental approaches to multiphasic and porous materials as well as various applications to engineering problems. In many branches of engineering just as in applied natural sciences like bio- and chemomechanics, one often has to deal with continuum mechanical problems which cannot be uniquely classified within the well-known disci plines of either "solid mechanics" or "fluid mechanics". These problems, characterized by the fact that they require a unified treatment of volumetri cally coupled solid-fluid aggregates; basically fall into the categories of either mixtures or porous media. Following this, there is a broad variety of problems ranging in this category as for example the investigation of reacting fluid mix tures or solid-fluid suspensions as well as the investigation of the coupled solid deformation and pore-fluid flow behaviour of liquid- and gas-saturated porous solid skeleton materials like geomaterials (soil, rock, concrete, etc. ), polymeric and metallic foams or biomaterials (hard and soft tissues, etc).

Book excerpt: It is now time for a comprehensive treatise to look at the whole field of electrochemistry. The present treatise was conceived in 1974, and the earliest invitations to authors for contributions were made in 1975. The completion of the early volumes has been delayed by various factors. There has been no attempt to make each article emphasize the most recent situation at the expense of an overall statement of the modern view. This treatise is not a collection of articles from Recent Advances in Electro chemistry or Modern Aspects of Electrochemistry. It is an attempt at making a mature statement about the present position in the vast area of what is best looked at as a new interdisciplinary field. Texas A & M University John O'M. Bockris University of Ottawa Brian E. Conway Case Western Reserve University Ernest B. Yeager Texas A & M University Ralph E. White Preface to VoluIJJe 8 The past three decades have seen the rapid evolution of the transport aspects of electrochemical engineering into a formal part of electrochemistry as well as chemical engineering. With minor exceptions, however, this subject has not been systematically covered in any treatise or recent electrochemical text. The editors believe that the treatment in this volume will serve the function.

Book excerpt: Electrochemistry is the branch of chemistry that deals with the chemical action of electricity and the production of electricity by chemical reactions. In a world short of energy sources yet long on energy use, electrochemistry is a critical component of the mix necessary to keep the world economies growing. Electrochemistry is involved with such important applications as batteries, fuel cells, corrosion studies, hydrogen energy conversion, and bioelectricity. Research on electrolytes, cells, and electrodes is within the scope of this old but extremely dynamic field. This book details advances in metal electrodeposition.
