Book excerpt: Adverse aeroelastic responses and related instabilities may affect the performance of many advanced air vehicle configurations. These responses are linked to nonlinearities within the aeroelastic system and have resulted in responses such as store-induced limit cycle oscillations (LCOs) and residual pitch oscillations (RPOs). As concepts for future aircraft designs are pursued, the source of these instabilities must be characterized. The primary objectives of this research are to investigate the presence of nonlinear pathologies such as LCOs and system resonances in aeroelastic systems; characterize the signature of such responses in the coupled nonlinear aerodynamic, structure, structural dynamic system; and, and examine passive suppression concepts. These research activities have been directed toward an explanation of nonlinear behavior found in aircraft systems. In particular, interest has been focused on store-induced limit cycle oscillations ("wing-with-store flutter") that exist, but not predicted with current approaches. We considered an aeroelastic system that was coupled by nonlinearities, possessed an external forcing, and satisfied conditions in which the frequencies were commensurate. Also, we examined LCO's induced by continuous hardening-type nonlinearities in structural stiffness.

Book excerpt: The analytical part deals with the nonlinear response of a three degree of freedom aeroelastic structural model in the neighborhood of combination internal resonance condition. The Fokker Planck equation approach is used to derive a general differential equation for the response statistical joint moments. The equations are solved by using numerical integration. The solution shows that the response coordinates are non-stationary random processes and the three normal modes are in complete nonlinear interaction. The interaction is found to be very strong at a region of internal detuning which is shifted from the exact internal resonance condition. This result is under further investigation by using a non-gaussian closure scheme. The experimental investigation is conducted out on a two degree of freedom model. When the first normal mode is externally excited by a band-limited random excitation, the system mean square response is found to be linearly proportional to the excitation spectral density level up to a certain level above which the two normal modes exhibit discontinuity governed mainly by the internal detuning parameter and the system damping ratios. The results are completely different when the second normal mode is excited. For small levels of excitation spectral density the response is dominated by the second normal mode. For higher levels of excitation spectral density the first normal mode attends and interacts nonlinearly with the second mode in a form of energy exchange.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the sixth edition. It is suitable for one or more courses at the advanced undergraduate level and graduate level to cover the field of aeroelasticity. It is also of value to the research scholar and engineering practitioner who wish to understand the state of the art in the field. This book covers the basics of aeroelasticity or the dynamics of fluid–structure interaction. While the field began in response to the rapid development of aviation, it has now expanded into many branches of engineering and scientific disciplines and treats physical phenomena from aerospace engineering, bioengineering, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering in addition to drawing the attention of mathematicians and physicists. The basic questions addressed are dynamic stability and response of fluid structural systems as revealed by both linear and nonlinear mathematical models and correlation with experiment. The use of scaled models and full-scale experiments and tests play a key role where theory is not considered sufficiently reliable.

Normally, a resonance condition is characterized by a symmetric shape on either side of the resonance. In some cases, we can observe an asymmetric resonance shape, which is referred to as a Fano resonance. Recently, experimental evidence of the appearance of Fano resonance in a purely mechan[ci]ical system has been found. We will form a theoretical study of the appearance of Fano resonance in such a system involving a primary system and a small attachment. The frequency response of the primary system is approximated using the method of multiple-scales. Using this, we investigate how the various parameters associated with the system influence the asymmetry in the resonance line-shape. We first focus on a linear system, and briefly extend the results to a cubic nonlinear system.

The book begins with fundamental concepts and techniques of analysis and progresses through recent developments and provides an overview that abstracts and introduces main nonlinear phenomena. It treats systems having a single degree of freedom, introducing basic concepts and analytical methods, and extends concepts and methods to systems having degrees of freedom. Most of this material cannot be found in any other text. Nonlinear Oscillations uses simple physical examples to explain nonlinear dispersive and nondispersive waves. The notation is unified and the analysis modified to conform to discussions. Solutions are worked out in detail for numerous examples, results are plotted and explanations are couched in physical terms. The book contains an extensive bibliography.
