Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate measurements of the 64Zn (n,2n)63Zn and 64Zn (n, p)64Cu cross sections at 14.8 MeV have been made using a Texas Nuclear Neutron Generator and the activation technique. A NaI(Tl) spectrometer (using two 6'' x 6'' NaI detectors/crystals) was ued to measure the gamma radiation emitted in coincidence from the positron-emitting decay products. The measurements were made relative to 65Cu (n,2n)64Cu and 63Cu (n,2n)62Cu cross sections, which have similar half-lives, radiation emission, and were previously measured to high accuracy (2%). The value obtained for the (n,2n) measurement was 199 +- 6 millibarns, and a value of 176 +- 4.5 millibarns was obtained for the (n, p) measurement. In concert, a theoretical analysis of neutron induced reactions on 64Zn was performed at Los Alamos National Laboratory using the Hauser-Feshbach statistical theory in the GNASH code over an energy range of 100 keV to 20 MeV. Calculations included width fluctuation corrections, direct reaction contributions, and preequilibrium corrections above 6 MeV. Neutron optical model potentials were determined for zinc. The theoretical values agree with the new 14.8 MeV measurements approximately within experimental error, with calculations of 201 millibarns for the (n,2n) cross section and 170 millibarns for the (n, p) cross section. Results from the analysis will be made available in National Evaluated Nuclear Data Format (ENDF/B) for fusion energy applications. 50 refs., 34 figs., 10 tabs.

Neutron induced reaction cross-section is indispensable quantity of nuclear data, which is imperative in the applications of nuclear science and technologies. Precise resonance cross-sections are desired for the safety investigation, assessment of the neutron flux density, reaction rate, etc to drive the nuclear technologies such as nuclear power plant. Fission reaction cross-section is the key parameter for the feasibility studies and for designing next generation reactor. This book presents concrete concepts of neutron, neutron production, neutron induced reaction cross-sections, resonances and interrelated matters. Careful and detailed theoretical and contemporary experimental approaches of this text provide clear, correct, and up-to-date information in the field of neutron physics. With comprehensible discussion and numerous experimental results, this book adequately and widely covers all the major categories of neutron cross-sections.

Book excerpt: Neutron Cross Sections presents the principles of cross-section measurement and use, as well as sufficient theory so that the general behavior of cross sections is made understandable. This compilation is a direct result of experiences connected with the collection and evaluation of cross-section data during the past eight years at ""Sigma Centre"", Brookhaven National Laboratory. Here, experimental results received from laboratories throughout the world are carefully evaluated and compiled in the curves and tables of the large volume Neutron Cross Sections, The most recent version of the compilation, known as BNL 325, appeared 1 July 1955, and Supplement 1 to BNL 325 was published on 1 January 1957. The compilation itself consists almost completely of cross sections at specific energies, shown in the form of curves or tables, with only brief explanatory texts. The text opens with discussions of the general properties of cross sections and principles of nuclear structure that are important to the understanding of cross-section behavior. Separate chapters follow that describe specific techniques for measuring cross sections along with experimental results involving fast neutrons, resonance neutrons, resonances in fissionable materials, and thermal neutrons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total cross sections of twelve different elements were measured using the neutron beam from the 184-in. cyclotron, operating with deuterons. Bismuth fission ionization chambers were employed as both monitor and detector in conventional 'good geometry' attenuation measurements in the neutron flux emerging from the 3-in. diameter collimating port in the 10-ft-thick concrete shielding. The mean energy of detection of the neutrons in this experiment is estimated to be 95 Mev. Measurements were also made with a monitor and detector placed inside the concrete shielding where an intense neutron flux over a large area could be obtained. Attenuators of four different elements were placed in front of the detector in a 'poor geometry' arrangement so that attenuation was due essentially to inelastic collisions which degrade the neutron energy below the fission threshold. A second detector was placed outside the concrete shielding In the collimated neutron beam in line with the neutron source, absorber, and first detector. Attenuation in it is caused by both inelastic and elastic scattering. By this arrangement the ratio of inelastic to total cross section can be determined directly in one experiment. The nuclear radii as calculated from the observed cross section, using the theory of the transparent nucleus, vary as 1.38 x 10(exp-13) A(exp(1/3)) cm. In this energy range the ratios of the inelastic to total cross sections are all less than one-half.

Book excerpt: Cross sections for radiative neutron capture on unstable nuclei at low energies are difficult to calculate with high precision, and can be impossible to measure directly. It is therefore important to explore alternative methods. The prospects of one such method, the Surrogate Nuclear Reaction Technique, is currently being investigated at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The purpose of this paper is to outline the strategy for combining the results from a surrogate experiment with theoretical calculations in order to extract the desired cross section.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new evaluation of neutron induced reactions on 197Au nucleus in the energy regions below 500 eV and from 4 keV to 100 keV is presented. Complete evaluated data files in ENDF-6 format have been produced by joining the evaluation with corresponding files from the ENDF/B-VII. 1 library. The evaluation in the unresolved resonance region between 4 keV and 100 keV is based on a generalized single-level representation compatible with the energy-dependent option of the ENDF-6 format. The average partial cross sections have been expressed in terms of transmission coefficients by applying the Hauser-Feshbach statistical reaction theory including width fluctuations. The transmission coefficients have been obtained from a combined analysis of the capture cross section resulting from the cross section standards evaluation project and theoretical nonfluctuating cross sections derived from a dispersive coupled channel optical model. The evaluated cross sections have been validated by a comparison with transmission and capture data obtained at the time-of-flight facility GELINA. The evaluated files have been processed with the latest updates of NJOY. 99 to test their format and application consistency as well as to produce a continuous-energy data library in ACE format for use in Monte Carlo codes. The ACE files have been utilized to study the effect of the evaluated resonance parameters on results of lead slowing-down experiments. The evaluated files will be implemented in the next release of the JEFF-3 library which is maintained by the Nuclear Energy Agency of the OECD.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear model codes were used to calculate cross sections for neutron-induced reactions on 19F for incident energies from 2 to 20 MeV. The model parameters in the codes were adjusted to best reproduce experimental data and are given in this report. The calculated results are compared to measured data and the evaluated values of ENDF/B-V. The covariance matrix for several of the most sensitive model parameters is given based on the scatter of measured data around the theoretical curves and the long-range correlation error of measured data. The results of these calculations form the basis for the new ENDF/B-VI fluorine evaluation. 44 refs., 64 figs., 14 tabs.
