Book excerpt: Most Christians living in a secular society have unwittingly relegated God and all things spiritual to the "second storey" of the universe: a realm we cannot reach except through death. The effect of this is to banish God, along with the saints and angels, from our everyday lives. Fr. Stephen Freeman makes a compelling case for becoming aware of God's living and active presence in every moment of our lives here and now. Learning to practice your Christian faith in a one-storey universe will change your life--and make possible the living, intimate relationship with God you've always dreamed of.

But how are Christians faithfully to gather together in relational bonds of love--in particular, through our daily bread and common cup--amidst a global market economy sustained by social and ecological violence? Drawing on the holiness-communitarian and agrarian-ecological traditions, Rooted and Grounded in Love provides a systematic theological affirmation of holiness as divine wholeness in examining our present industrial agro-economy while also promoting a practical vision for how Christians might participate in the emergence of a more ecologically sustaining, economically charitable, and politically just food system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Los Angeles Times Best Non-Fiction Book of 2007 A Boston Globe Best Non-Fiction Book of 2007 Amazon.com Editors pick as one of the 10 best history books of 2007 Winner of the 2007 John Lyman Award for U. S. Maritime History, given by the North American Society for Oceanic History "The best history of American whaling to come along in a generation." —Nathaniel Philbrick The epic history of the "iron men in wooden boats" who built an industrial empire through the pursuit of whales. "To produce a mighty book, you must choose a mighty theme," Herman Melville proclaimed, and this absorbing history demonstrates that few things can capture the sheer danger and desperation of men on the deep sea as dramatically as whaling. Eric Jay Dolin begins his vivid narrative with Captain John Smith's botched whaling expedition to the New World in 1614. He then chronicles the rise of a burgeoning industry—from its brutal struggles during the Revolutionary period to its golden age in the mid-1800s when a fleet of more than 700 ships hunted the seas and American whale oil lit the world, to its decline as the twentieth century dawned. This sweeping social and economic history provides rich and often fantastic accounts of the men themselves, who mutinied, murdered, rioted, deserted, drank, scrimshawed, and recorded their experiences in journals and memoirs. Containing a wealth of naturalistic detail on whales, Leviathan is the most original and stirring history of American whaling in many decades.

And yet, around this small book, as if it were around Jonah's own troubled ship, high waves of controversy and mystery have swirled for centuries. In A Journey with Jonah: The Spirituality of Bewilderment, Fr. Paul Murray strives to uncover the great lesson of this story. Following Fr. From the walls of the Roman catacombs to the paintings of Marc Chagall, visual art in the West has consistently drawn its most profound and generative inspiration from biblical narrative and imagery. Jeffrey guides readers through this artistic tradition from the second century to the twenty-first, astutely pointing out its relationship not only to the biblical sources but also to related expressions in liturgy and historical theology. Book Synopsis Under the Unpredictable Plant by : Eugene H. Peterson
Download or read book Under the Unpredictable Plant written by Eugene H. Peterson and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1994-06-27 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like Eugene Peterson's other books on pastoring, Under the Unpredictable Plant is full of stimulating insights, candid observations, and biblically grounded prescriptions. Yet this book emanates with a special poignancy out of Peterson's own crisis experience as a pastor. Peterson tells about the "abyss," the "gaping crevasse," the "chasm" that he experienced, early in his ministry, between his Christian faith and his pastoral vocation. He was astonished and dismayed to find that his personal spirituality, his piety, was inadequate for his vocation -- and he argues that the same is true of pastors in general. In the book of Jonah -- a parable with a prayer at its center -- Peterson finds a subversive, captivating story that can help pastors recover their "vocational holiness." Using the Jonah story as a narrative structure, Peterson probes the spiritual dimensions of the pastoral calling and seeks to reclaim the ground taken over by those who are trying to enlist pastors in religious careers.

Book Synopsis Human Experience and the Triune God by : Bernhard Nausner
Download or read book Human Experience and the Triune God written by Bernhard Nausner and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarching aim of this work is to develop a new account of the doctrine of the Trinity. The author proposes that such an approach is overdue because contemporary trinitarian theology pays insufficient attention to the fact that theology as linguistic discourse is inescapably embedded in human experience. Hence the critical analysis of existing trinitarian constructions (Gunton, LaCugna, Moltmann) is impressively sharp. In response Nausner develops an 'interstitial methodology', working between experience and revelation, refusing both revelational and experiential positivisms. In dialogue with contemporary novels, the human sciences (Frankl, Weizsäcker), philosophy (Levinas) and biblical narratives, he offers an imaginative, original and contemporary way of conceiving the doctrine of the Trinity in relation to human life.
Book Synopsis Loving the Way Jesus Loves by : Philip Ryken
Download or read book Loving the Way Jesus Loves written by Philip Ryken and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2013-04-23 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people are familiar with the ‘love chapter’ of the Bible, 1 Corinthians 13, yet Phil Ryken still has something new to say. He draws on the earthly life and ministry of Jesus to illustrate Paul’s several statements about what love is and isn’t. These aspects of love are then illuminated chronologically through the story of Christ’s advent, teaching, miracle working, sufferings, crucifixion, death, resurrection and ascension. Jesus never does anything without love. His love is everything the love chapter says that love should be. It is patient with sinners and kind to strangers. It does not envy or boast, but offers itself in humble service. It does not insist on its own way, but submits to the Father. It is able to forgive, trust, hope and persevere. This approach highlights the crucial truth that we are able to love only because Christ first loved us in this particularly profound, very real, and transformative manner.
Book Synopsis The Theology of Fear by : Emmett Coyne
Download or read book The Theology of Fear written by Emmett Coyne and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John XXIII (of happy memory) made familiar the Italian word, 'aggiornamento' - a bringing up to date. The word has become synonymous with reading the 'signs of the times.' One can only imagine if he was pope as long as John Paul II where 'aggiornamento' would have taken the Roman Church. Since Vatican II there have been attempts to update the liturgy but none to update the theology of the Roman Church. There is possibly a greater attrition of members because of a theology in which increasingly educated people reject. According to the Pew Forum on Religion, one out of every three adult Americans raised Catholic left the church. The reasons are varied. For thinking, questioning adults, the current theology is suspect. Emmett Coyne, 46 years a Catholic priest, revisits the theology to which he was exposed and expected to reinforce and finds it filled with fear: devils, mortal sins, an eternal hell replete with torture, blind obedience to a hierarchy which does little to lift burdens but seeks to control members not liberate them, etc. In the Kingdom teaching of Jesus, he sought to exorcise fear but the Roman Church reinforces it through its current theology. Cardinal Newman, referred to as the "absent Council Father" of Vatican II, wrote an "Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine." He represents a view that life is dynamic, not static. Humanity is continually discovering new insights in everything that affects life on this planet. Theology should not be immune. Roman theological doctrine and morality desperately needs an updating, a makeover. Previously held suppositions need to be revisited without fear of retaliation. While Augustine argued for a 'just war, ' today, more persons argue war is altogether obsolete. Conflict resolution offers more sane solutions than resorting to devastating warfare. Currently, the Roman Church claims it is being persecuted in the USA. Yet it persecutes its own members who exercise freedom of inquiry. Fr. Coyne contends a rediscovery of a theology based on the Kingdom teaching, centered in the Sermon on the Mount, the Beatitudes, and the praxis of love, and would be new wine for humanity. He believes if the Roman Church focuses on these healthier seeds in its tradition, it will produce new growth, a more abundant future. The Theology of Fear reflects the spirit of John XXIII's 'aggiornamento' and Newman's dynamic view of things theological. In exorcising fear from its current theology, seeking the Kingdom first when reading the 'signs of the times, ' the Roman Church can yet offer hope for humanity. This was the hope of Vatican II which unfortunately has turned into a winter of discontent.
Book Synopsis Trust in Theological Education by : Eve Parker
Download or read book Trust in Theological Education written by Eve Parker and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As those coming forward for ministerial training change and diversify, is the way we learn theology changing too? Integrity within our training institutions has often been assumed and granted to white, male, or those from the middle or upper classes. This has come at the expense of the faith truths, beliefs and perspectives offered by women, people of colour, indigenous theologies and the working classes, whose testimonies have often been ignored or marginalised by the dominant discourses that have been deemed more trustworthy as a consequence of the way in which imperialism has enabled knowledge and religion to be constructed and controlled. Yet theological education also has a potential to challenge these norms. It holds the potential to challenge oppressive cultures, theologies and pedagogies. Relying on feminist, black, indecent, and postcolonial theologies this book will deconstruct dominant models of theological education, by incorporating ethnographic research, alongside educational theory, liberation theology and radical exegesis’. It will demonstrate theological educations potential to change, and be transformed in order to enable those who have been excluded and marginalised to become speaking subjects and agents for systemic change.
