Book excerpt: Belief in the resurrection of Jesus is central to the Christian faith. But how sure can we be that this belief is well-founded? In Easter Faith one of the most distinguished Catholic biblical scholars and theologians of our time draws on a lifetime's study and research to review the evidence for the credibility of the resurrection. The result is a lucid and elegant work that brings together biblical scholarship, theology, and lived experience into a unique and compelling portrait of the Easter faith of the Christian community. +

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theology—the attempt to come to a deeper, more faithful understanding of one's encounter with God—is something to which all Christians are called. In Learning Theology, Amos Yong invites the reader to lay claim to that calling and to see it as yet another opportunity to love God. Written for those taking their first course in the subject, this book introduces the foundational sources and tasks of theology. It asks what difference theology makes in our lives, how it can influence the way we write and study, and how we understand other forms of learning as part of the Spirit's leadership. Yong encourages the reader to see all of life through the lens of faith, and Learning Theology offers tools to more thoughtfully and faithfully perform that task.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because "spirituality" is such a ubiquitous term today, any attempt to elucidate it more fully is only to be welcomed. Volume 23 in the LTPM series represents a significant contribution in this regard. Beginning with the apostle Paul, Declan Marmion shows how the meaning of the term "spirituality" changed over the centuries. He then offers a useful working definition of spirituality and explores the complicated relationship between spirituality, academic theology, and religious experience. In the main body of the book, Marmion focuses on the spiritual basis of Karl Rahner's theology. Exhibiting a comprehensive knowledge of the primary and secondary literature in this area, Marmion uses Rahner's notion of spirituality to treat such important themes as the nature of God, mystical experience, prayer, love of neighbor, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2003 the British New Testament scholar N. T. Wright published The Resurrection of the Son of God, arguing vigorously that the Resurrection of Christ should be handled purely as a historical event - subjected to historical reason and critical-historical research. This book critically examines Wright's arguments. Peter Carnley demonstrates the flaws in the view that the Resurrection should be understood essentially as Jesus' return from the dead to this world of space and time in a material and physical body. Carnley argues that the Resurrection of Christ is a "mystery of God", which must necessarily be appropriated, not by reason alone, but by faith. Evidence relating to a past occurrence can be known only retrospectively. Yet Easter faith has to do with apprehending in the present a concretely experienced reality - which Saint Paul called "the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" (Rom 8:2). An epistemology of the identification of the Spirit in faith as the living presence of Christ will be found in the companion volume to this book: The Reconstruction of Resurrection Belief.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A Companion to Jesuit Mysticism, Robert A. Maryks provides thirteen unique essays discussing the Jesuit mystical tradition, a somewhat neglected aspect of Jesuit historiography that stretches as far back as the order’s co-founder, Ignatius of Loyola, his spiritual visions at Manresa, and ultimately the mystical perspective contained in his Spiritual Exercises. The volume’s contributions on the most significant representatives of the Jesuit mystical tradition—from Baltasar Álvarez to Louis Lallemant to Hugo Makibi Enomiya-Lassalle—aim to fill this lacuna in Jesuit historiography. Although intended primarily as a handbook for scholars seeking to further their own research in this area, the volume will undoubtedly be of interest to scholars and students of Jesuit studies more broadly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encountering the Mystery of God details a practical plan for the seven weeks of Mystagogy from the second week of Easter to Pentecost Sunday. Although there is little guidance in the manual of the Rite (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults = RCIA), this book remains close to the requirements of the Rite, but amplifies the ways in which the roles of pastor, parish RCIA team, the parish community and the newly-received, can be involved. However, the book reaches beyond RCIA. It shows a way for Christians generally to celebrate the Season of Easter according to the unfolding drama of the Liturgy in these seven weeks between Easter and Pentecost. We know the Risen Christ was the first one to institute this formation period for his apostles between Resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit. This book traces a gradual journey of exploration into the spiritual life for us all as we journey from Easter to Pentecost. We react with Thomas on Faith in the Risen Christ on the second week; then we accompany the disciples to Emmaus; after the Good Shepherd and the gate of the sheepfold, we come to know Jesus as the Way, Truth and Life. We see that conversion means to be part of the mission to all the world at the Ascension. We wait to be filled with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. This spiritual journey is largely based on the Gospel of John as the liturgy requires and makes links with parish involvement on a week-by-week basis according to the Gospel themes. The book is based on empirical research which shows that the quality of the Mystagogy period offered in the parishes correlates with a retention of sacramental practice of the neophytes and newly-received in their lives. Mystagogy, of course, continues for one's whole life, but the fourth period of RCIA requires us to ""nurture the vine"" for seven weeks after Easter. The endorsement of this book come from Dr Elio Capra SDB, who has for many years been committed to the cause of RCIA, from a fellow Christian Brother, Michael Flaherty, versed in quality teaching, and from a theologian and parish assistant priest, Dr James McEvoy, who knows the journey of many ordinary Christians in their encounter with God. This book is a recommended resource for all parishes and for people who wish to follow their spiritual journey through these seven weeks of Liturgy. Patrick Cronin is a Christian Brother in the Oceania Province and is based in Adelaide, South Australia. After many years in school ministry, Patrick was invited by the Archbishop of Adelaide to take up the role of Co-ordinator of the Adult Catechumenate, which is fostering the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) in the Archdiocese. Patrick completed degrees in Masters in Theological Studies, and a Doctorate of Ministry. Patrick tells the story in this book of conversion at the various adult stages in faith development. Patrick has written many articles and is published in the American Catechumenate Journal of Christian Initiation and the Australasian Catholic Record. At a personal level, bringing the RCIA process to many people in his Adelaide Cathedral parish brings him much pleasure. This book is recommended as a resource for parish groups engaged in the RCIA.

The book draws on all four Gospels and the book of Revelation, providing biblical inspiration for the quest for peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the companion volume to this, The Resurrection in Retrospect, Peter Carnley focuses on the inadequacies for faith in Jesus Christ of an approach to his resurrection purely as an event of past historical time. The Reconstruction of Resurrection Belief articulates an alternative understanding of resurrection faith as essentially a response of trust based upon a knowledge by acquaintance with the living presence of Christ today. This book seeks to articulate an understanding of the nature of resurrection faith in the language of today, with as much logical coherence as possible, in the hope that it may have some traction in the increasingly secular world of contemporary scientific materialism. It faces the key challenge of seeking to explain how the claim that the animating Spirit of the Christian community that Saint Paul spoke of as "the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus" (Rom 8:2) may be justifiably identified in faith today as "the living presence of Jesus of Nazareth."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So what really happened that first Easter Sunday? The simple answer is that no one knows… only a problem if one is trying to prove that each of the stories is factually accurate. If we suspend that attempt for a moment and read the Easter stories in the gospels for what they are – profound statements of faith – we may discover something much more powerful and lasting… Few stories in the entire pantheon of literature evoke as much emotion as the gospel accounts of the resurrection of Jesus. For many Christians, these are the quintessential texts, the ones that define Christianity, their personal faith, and the whole of human existence. That’s a lot to put onto a few simple stories! When using this study, therefore, it will be helpful to have a sense of where participants are coming from. Are they a mixed group with ideas that are all over the theological map? Do they tend to approach the stories as metaphor and take the stance that the resurrection could not possibly have happened? Do they take it literally and believe that things must have happened exactly as they are recorded? Do they feel that there is some point to reading these stories, even though they leave us with more questions than answers? People’s ideas may differ – slightly or greatly – and that’s okay. The point of doing this study is not so that everyone comes out with the same belief, nor is it to convince anyone, at any time, that they must believe one thing or another. The purpose of this study is to explore these powerful faith stories so that they might in turn inform and enhance our daily living.
