Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word "grace," already current in classical and Hellenistic Greek, received a great enrichment of meaning in the New Testament. In the course of Christian history, this meaning has frequently been obscured and even debased, though it has never been wholly lost. During the Reformation it was largely rediscovered; in the Evangelical Revival it was reaffirmed, though not without some differences of emphasis; and today, through the revival of biblical theology, it is again coming into its own. In the first chapter, the author examines the use of the term by Saint Paul, who must be regarded as the classic exponent of its Christian meaning. The next three chapters illustrate the variety of ways in which the idea of grace finds expression in New Testament Christianity. The fifth shows how essentially the same idea is embodied in the creedal formulations of the early church--and how it is distorted in some more recent dogmatic pronouncements. The sixth reviews the rise and controversial progress of a specific doctrine of grace, describing its main features as they appear in the work of the Fathers, the Schoolmen, and the Reformers. In the concluding chapter, in which traditional theological language is all but discarded, an attempt is made to consider how far the facts of our human experience justify us in speaking of the reality of grace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dialogue is an integral part of the mission of the Christian church. The immensity of the ocean of Hindu doctrine and thought presents a significant obstacle to Christians who have been invited by the Roman Catholic Church to “scrutinize the divine Mystery” present in other religions. Many, fascinated by Hindu mysticism, confuse permanent Hindu beliefs with certain current Western religious movements. India’s quest for the divine embodies multiple forms. Its millennia-old methods of meditation and varieties of asceticism often confuse those who are less inclined to experience of an inner spiritual nature. This book attempts to address some of these difficulties and questions. It is the author’s belief that in the Hindu-Christian encounter the Christian believer will also rediscover the originality and newness of the Christian revelation, viz. the intervention of God in the history of salvation whereby God reveals his salvific love in Jesus Christ. Possessing expert knowledge of both Hinduism and Christianity, the author approaches the Hindu-Christian dialogue with sympathy and discernment.

The fact is, there are thousands of people who believe solely in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior but who have no plans to be baptized or to join the local church. Churchless Christianity is based on research from the early 1980s among non-baptized believers in Christ in Tamil Nadu, India. This revised edition includes all the original text plus five additional chapters and a new foreword.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jones recounts his experiences in India, where he arrived as a young and presumptuous missionary who later matured into a veteran who attempted to contextualize Jesus Christ within the Indian culture. He names the mistake many Christians make in trying to impose their culture on the existing culture where they are bringing Christ. Instead he makes the case that Christians learn from other cultures, respect the truth that can be found there, and let Christ and the existing culture do the rest.

This book, first published in 1969, is the first systematic and detailed work which attempts to bring out both the differences and similarities. The author selects some of the fundamental problems of philosophical ethics, such as the moral law – its authority and sources, moral effort and human freedom, moral failure and responsibility – and explores the respective answers of Hinduism and Christianity.
