Book excerpt: Résumé en 4ème de couverture: "After the First World War, the European avant-gardes longed for change and hoped for a better future. More than any other artist, Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931) took part in this reconstruction effort by broadening Piet Mondian's Neoplastic aesthetic to all disciplines: painting, sculpture, architecture and the applied arts. Theo van Doesburg proposed a genuine revolution that sought to transform the world in every way, to create a new kind of artistic expression, wich would interact not only with life in all its complexity but also with scientific and technological developments. His constantly changing approach brought together apparently incompatible innovation, as demonstrated by this move toward Elementarism and then to Art Concret. To champion his project on the international stage, Van Doesburg, who was also the founder of th De Stijl movement and its magazine, succeeded in bringing together all the leading artists. He is recognized as much for his visual achievements as for his means of accomplishing a philosophical, artistic an collective ideal. Many artists, including Mondrian, would largely owe their internation renown to Theo van Doesburg."

The Story of De Stijl presents work by Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, Gerrit Rietveld, and the other members of this influential group, as well as archival photographs of the artists. The authors - experts in this seminal abstract style that encompassed painting, sculpture, architecture, interior design, and more - explore the evolution of the movement not just through traditional art-historical analysis, but also through anecdotes, conversations, articles, and other contemporary sources. With more than 325 colour illustrations, The Story of De Stijl makes clear the lasting importance and influence of this once avant-garde movement"-- Publicaciones Arquitectura y Arte.

Book excerpt: Dutch artist Theo Van Doesburg (1883-1931) is perhaps best known as a prime mover in De Stijl, the Dutch artistic movement that demanded an elemental, abstract vocabulary in both Painting and Architecture. Here, revealed for the first time, is the true extent of his involvement with Dada and Constructivist artists' groups spread across the whole of Europe, as far as Russia and beyond, and the breadth of his creative practice in fields as diverse as Film, Typography, Graphic Design and Music. A man of multiple talents and identities, he was inspired by the catastrophe of the First World War to attempt nothing less than the reshaping of culture in its entirety and the construction of a new world --

Book excerpt: There is no shortage of books about Le Corbusier, or Mies van der Rohe, or De Stijl. However, this book considers them in relation to each other, observing how a study of one can illuminate the works of the others. Going beyond a superficial look at the end-products of these architects, this book examines the philosophical foundations of their work, taking as its central theme the aim of universality, as opposed to the individual and the particular. Each of these three aimed at universality, but for each this concept took on a different form. The universality of De Stijl and artists like Van Doesburg and Mondrian resembled that of the universe itself: it was boundless, going beyond the limits of the canvas and seeking to abolish the wall as the boundary between interior and exterior space. In contrast, each of Le Corbusier’s creations was a self-contained universe within a clear frame, while Mies fluctuated between these two perspectives.

Book excerpt: The Dutch magazine De Stijl, published from 1917 to 1931, was the focus of a remarkable group of advanced artists and architects who sought to combine their individual talents in collaborative projects that reflected their social and aesthetic ideals. The De Stijl Environment explores the group's approach to exterior and interior spaces and to furniture. It treats such themes as color, abstraction, and the corner, and describes the various collaborative efforts within the movement, in particular, the one that produced the De Stijl environment. Troy traces its evolution from an architecturally defined space to one determined by coloristic design. Among the painters discussed are Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, Vilmos Huszar, and Bart van der Liek; the architects include Gerrit Rietveld, Rob van't Hoff, Jan Wils, J. J. P Oud, and Cornelius van Eesteren. Nancy J. Troy is Associate Professor of Art History, Northwestern University.

Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive study of a major figure of the modern movement, in whose work philosophy, architecture and painting are inextricably entwined. From the founding of the periodical De Stijl in 1917, van Doesburg occupied a central position in the development of a Modernist aesthetic. His early career was concentrated on poetry and painting, but from the inception of De Stijl and his association with painters and architects such as Piet Mondrian and J. J. P. Oud, he turned increasingly to architecture as the locus for the accomplishment of the 'total work of art'. Van Doesburg became an architectural theorist of international renown, but encountered disappointment at every turn in his architectural practice. Projects and buildings became object-lessons in the fundamental principles of architecture; theory was shown to be a necessary concomitant to practice. Van Doesburg's extreme polemic guaranteed controversy and conflict so intense that it is still fresh in the minds of his surviving collaborators and correspondents. As the flint to the steel of architects like Gropius and Le Corbusier, as a painter and architect, and as the editor of De Stijl, he was a key figure in the growth of Modernism.
