Book Synopsis Essais de linguistique française et anglaise by : Rostislav Kocourek
Download or read book Essais de linguistique française et anglaise written by Rostislav Kocourek and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This collection of eighteen French and English linguistic essays is bilingual: French essays are followed by English summaries, and vice versa. The topics, while quite varied, belong to the lexico-semantico-textual area of linguistics. Examples of topics dealt with: lexical and terminological formation and semantics (neology, synonymy, metaphor, definition, motivation); text linguistics; English-French comparison; linguistic theory (structure, openness of the lexical system, poststructuralism); linguistics of specialized language and terminology (area in which the author has particularly gained international recognition); descriptions of the poetic language (Hugo's octopus metaphors, language and translations of a play by Shakespeare and Fletcher). The author's linguistics is reason-oriented rather than postmodern, his analysis is empirically based on texts, opting for a 'recognitive' rather than a generative approach. The language of the essays is not formalyzed, it is a clear specialized natural language. The essays are provided with extensive bibliographies and with a detailed index of terms and authors.

While it is not intended as a comprehensive book on the topic, this book is meant to provide an approachable, practical and concise work for law students. Legal practitioners, professionals and anyone who need to acquire knowledge on the subject, however, will also find this book useful. The book introduces the major themes and explains the different sources of contract law, the formation of a valid contract, its contents, “vitiating” factors, the termination of contracts and remedies for breach of contract. Contract Law also features : • valuable drafting tips • diagrams, figures and tables • activities and key answers • grammar in context • irregular verbs • annexes : the legal system of the world, UK Zero Hour Contract, bibliography, links • an extensive bilingual glossary • a practical topic index Table des matières : 1. Download or read book A Wave written by John Ashbery and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Ashbery’s most acclaimed and beloved collections since Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror, filled with his signature wit and generous intelligence The poems in John Ashbery’s award-winning 1984 collection A Wave address the impermanence of language, the nature of mortality, and the fluidity of consciousness—matters of life and death that in other hands might run the risk of sentimentality. For John Ashbery, however, these considerations provide an opportunity to display his prodigious poetic gifts: the unerring ear for our evolving modern language and its ever-expanding universe of meanings, the fierce eye trained on glimmers underwater, and the wry humor that runs through observations both surprising and familiar. As the poem “The Path to the White Moon” has it, “We know what is coming, that we are moving / Dangerously and gracefully / Toward the resolution of time / Blurred but alive with many separate meanings / Inside this conversation.” The long title poem of A Wave, which closes the book, is considered one of Ashbery’s most distinguished works, praised by critic Helen Vendler for its “genius for a free and accurate American rendition of very elusive inner feelings, and especially for transitive states between feelings.” Winner of both the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize and the Bollingen Prize, this book is one to be read, reread, and remembered.
Book Synopsis The Rules for the Gender of French Nouns by : Saul H. Rosenthal
Download or read book The Rules for the Gender of French Nouns written by Saul H. Rosenthal and published by Saul Rosenthal. This book was released on 2009 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you wonder why an arm is masculine while a leg is feminine? Why your sofa is masculine but your chair is feminine? And why should a person or victim always be feminine, even if the person or victim you're talking about happens to be a man? And isn't it odd that masculinit is feminine? The illogic of French gender can be very frustrating. But after reading this book, if you see words like croisement, pays, vin, or chocolat, you will instantly know they are masculine, and you will also immediately recognize that words like ville, facture, maladie, and essence are feminine.
