Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theatre has provided many words and meanings which we use - ignorant of their origins - in everyday writing and speech. This is the first book to explore 2,000 theatre terms in depth, in some cases tracing their history over two and a half millenia, in others exploring expressions less than a decade old. Terms are defined, shown in use and cross-referenced in ways which will fascinate theatre-goers, help theatre students and encourage those engaged in the theatre to examine the familiar from new angles.

Book Synopsis Architecture in Words by : Louise Pelletier
Download or read book Architecture in Words written by Louise Pelletier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the house you are about to enter was built with the confessed purpose of seducing you, of creating various sensations destined to touch your soul and make you reflect on who you are? Could architecture have such power? This was the assumption of generations of architects at the beginning of modernity. Exploring the role of theatre and fiction in defining character in architecture, Louise Pelletier examines how architecture developed to express political and social intent. Applying this to the modern day, Pelletier considers how architects can learn from these eighteenth century attitudes in order to restore architecture's communicative dimension. Through an in-depth and interdisciplinary analysis of the beginning of modernity, Louise Pelletier encourages today's architects to consider the political and linguistic implications of their tools. Combining theory, historical studies and research, Architecture in Words will provoke thought and enrich the work of any architect.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1974, a group of determined, young high school actors started doing plays under the name of Steppenwolf Theatre Company, eventually taking residence in the basement of a church in Highland Park, a suburb of Chicago. Thus began their unlikely journey to become one of the most prominent theatre companies in the world. Steppenwolf Theatre Company has changed the face of American Theatre with its innovative approach that blends dynamic ensemble performance, honest, straightforward acting, and bold, thought-provoking stories to create compelling theatre. This is the first book to chronicle this iconic theatre company, offering an account of its early years and development, its work, and the methodologies that have made it one of the most influential ensemble theatres today. Through extensive, in-depth interviews conducted by the author with ensemble members, this book reveals the story of Steppenwolf's miraculous rise from basement to Broadway and beyond. Interviewees include co-founders Jeff Perry, Gary Sinise and Terry Kinney, along a myriad of ensemble, staff, board members and others.
Book Synopsis Theatre and Judaism by : Yair Lipshitz
Download or read book Theatre and Judaism written by Yair Lipshitz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-16 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new title in the Theatre & series explores the intersections between theatre and Judaism, offering a uniquely nuanced approach as a counterpart to the more common discourse surrounding Jewish theatre. Arguing that theatre allows for a subtle engagement with religious heritage that does not easily fall into a religious/secular dichotomy, it examines the ways in which Jewish tradition lends itself to theatrical performance. With rigorous scholarship and a fresh perspective, Theatre and Judaism promotes a transnational and comparative approach, considering Judaism as a religious-cultural tradition rather than focusing on a particular national context. Exciting and thought-provoking, this is the perfect companion for undergraduate and postgraduate students of theatre or religious studies.
Book Synopsis Words, Space, and the Audience by : M. Bennett
Download or read book Words, Space, and the Audience written by M. Bennett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-07-16 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this unique study, Michael Y. Bennett re-reads four influential modern plays alongside their contemporary debates between rationalism and empiricism to show how these monumental achievements were thoroughly a product of their time, but also universal in their epistemological quest to understand the world through a rational and/or empirical model. Bennett contends that these plays directly engage in their contemporary epistemological debates rather than through the lens of a specific philosophy. Besides producing new, insightful readings of heavily-studied plays, the interdisciplinary (historical, philosophical, dramatic, theatrical, and literary) frame Bennett constructs allows him to investigate one of the most fundamental questions of the theatre - how does meaning get made? Bennett suggests that the key to unlocking theatrical meaning is exploring the tension between empirical and rational modes of understanding. The book concludes with an interview with performance artist Coco Fusco.

Download or read book Echo's Voice written by Mary Noonan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helene Cixous (1937-), distinguished not least as a playwright herself, told Le Monde in 1977 that she no longer went to the theatre: it presented women only as reflections of men, used for their visual effect. The theatre she wanted would stress the auditory, giving voice to ways of being that had previously been silenced. She was by no means alone in this. Cixous's plays, along with those of Nathalie Sarraute (1900-99), Marguerite Duras (1914-96), and Noelle Renaude (1949-), among others, have proved potent in drawing participants into a dynamic 'space of the voice'. If, as psychoanalysis suggests, voice represents a transitional condition between body and language, such plays may draw their audiences in to understandings previously never spoken. In this ground-breaking study, Noonan explores the rich possibilities of this new audio-vocal form of theatre, and what it can reveal of the auditory self.
