Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theatre, Vol. 3: January to June, 1884 I am not sure that Mr. Pinero is at all indebted in any true sense to Mannen af bord och Qvinnan af Folket, the long and intensely moral romance by Marie Sophie Schwartz, on which Lords and Commons is founded. Had he freed himself more completely from its in uence, his play would have been better. It is one of those novels Of romantic intrigue and situation, some what in Spielhagen's earlier manner, which were so popular in Germany and Scandinavia about the middle Of this century. The characters are always telling each other their interminable histories with a running comment of moral re ection. Much labour is devoted to preventing the intrigue from unravelling too fast, and the central secret is kept to the last with perverse ingenuity. Mr. Pinero has added little or nothing in the shape of plot, and has had to reject much. The main improbability of the problem, and the chief errors in its working out, he has borrowed from his original. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Theatrical Art, Vol. 3: In Ancient and Modern Times Before the Existence of Theatres - Influence of Italian stage technique - Inns - Attacks of the Puritans - James Burbage and the Erection of the First Theatre. At the date of Shakespeare's birth (1564) no permanent theatre as yet existed in England. But there had long existed a class of professional actors, descended partly from the mystery and miracle playing artisans of the Middle Ages, partly from the strolling players, equilibrists, jugglers and jesters. Professional Italian actors (players of the Commedia dell' Arte), who in the sixteenth century spread their gay and varied art all over Europe, also supplied English players with that touch of professional technique, in which their somewhat vacillating and half amateurish art was still wanting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theatre, 1903, Vol. 3: Illustrated Monthly Magazine of Theatrical and Musical Life Mr. Cable's novel contains very little, if any, of the stir ring incidents just related, and in this fact, perhaps, one finds additional proof, if any were needed, that novels do not make good plays, for the acts that follow and which adhere more closely to the book are weak in comparison, the piece degenerating rapidly into a crazy-quilt of hackneyed situa tions. The play suffers from having a too good first act, for it is in the nature of an anti-climax. The interest, instead of increasing to the end, decreases from the start. Miss Marlowe has never done better work or had a better opportunity for the display of her varied and delightful art. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dramatic Works, Vol. 1 of 3 I believe few plays have ever adventured into the world under greater disadvantages than this. First, as it succeeded a comedy which, for the continued Space of twenty-eight nights, received as great (and as just) applauses, as ever were bestowed on the English Theatre. And secondly, as it is co-temporary with an entertain ment which engrosses the whole talk and admiration of the town. These were difficulties which seemed rather to require the superior force of a Wycherley, or a Congreve, than of a raw and unexperienced pen; for I believe I may boast that none ever appeared so early upon the stage. How ever, such was the candour of the audience, the play was received with greater satisfaction than I should have promised myself from its merit, had it even preceded the Provoked Husband. But after having returned thanks to the spectators, I cannot rest till I have been in some measure grateful to the performers. As for Mr. Wilks and Mr. Cibber, I cannot sufficiently acknowledge their civil and kind be haviour previous to its representation. How advantageously both they and the other personages set off their respective parts, at that time, has been spoken of by much politer and better judges than myself. Lastly, I can never express my grateful sense of the good nature of Mrs. Oldfield; who, though she had contracted a slight indisposition by her violent fatigue in the part of Lady Townly, was prevailed on to grace that of Lady Matchless; which placed her in a light so far inferior to that which she had in the other. Nor do I owe less to her excellent judgment, shown in some corrections, which I shall, for my own sake, conceal. But the ravishing perfections of this lady are so much the admiration of every eye and every ear, that they will remained fixed in the memory of many, when these light scenes shall be forgotten.
