They are united by Geography, History, Religion and most importantly Language ... They all speak Yoruba. In present day West Africa, the main countries where Yoruba speaking people live are Nigeria, Togo and Benin. These countries are very close together. Many years ago, before African slavery, the Yoruba people inhabited an area which stretched, along the coast of West Africa, all the way inward and down to Angola in South West Africa. During the period of African Slavery, from the late 1500's to the late 1800's, millions of Yoruba people were forcibly taken out of Africa. Their numbers dwindled and so did their land area. After Slavery, the European powers (i.e.) the British; French; Dutch; Spanish and Portuguese, cut up the continent of Africa into different pieces and imposed new countries and languages in Africa. The Yoruba people suffered greatly, they were divided. Their people were scattered all over the Americas. They now spoke many different languages ... Spanish, English, Dutch, French, and Portuguese.

This pioneering investigation, published in 1894, reveals the culture, history, spiritual beliefs and unique language of the Yoruba ethnicity. After introducing the region with maps and descriptions of the coast and its settlements, the author commences his wide-ranging and superbly researched assessment of the Yoruba people. Their laws and system of government, their religious rites, doctrines and ceremonies, their folk tales and legends, and their fascinating language are but some of the topics covered. Throughout his enquiries, the author writes with both passion and meticulous detail, particularly when it comes to the vocabulary and linguistics unique to the Yoruba. Alfred Burdon Ellis was a British army officer who authored several books concerning West Africa and its inhabitants. An educated man greatly intrigued by the region to which he was posted, Ellis managed to learn local languages and customs, to the point where his writings constituted pioneering texts of West African ethnography. Yoruba-Speaking Peoples was the final book that Ellis wrote: shortly after its completion he was taken ill with fever, perishing months later on the island of Tenerife aged only 42.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ewe-Speaking Peoples of the Slave Coast of West Africa: Their Religion, Manners, Customs, Laws, Languages, &C The kindly manner in which the Tshi-speaking Peoples of the Gold Coast, my first essay in anthropology, was received by the press, has encouraged me to persevere in the task which I had proposed to myself when I commenced to write that book, and which was to show, by examples taken from certain negro peoples of the West Coast of Africa, how the evolution of religion may proceed. The peoples I had in mind were - (1) The Tshi-speaking peoples of the Gold Coast;(2) The Ga-spcaking peoples of the Gold Coast; (3) The Ewe-speaking peoples of the Slave Coast; and (4) The Yoruba-speaking peoples of the Slave Coast; whose languages all belong to one family, and who have apparently all sprung from one common stock. These peoples are situated on the West Coast of Africa in the above order, beginning with the most westerly, and the date of their separation into their present lingual groups must have been rather remote, as Tshi, Ga, Ewe, and Yoruba are now four distinct languages, whose common origin can only be determined by their construction and roots. The people of these four groups have not progressed equally since their separation. Speaking generally, it may be said that, proceeding from west to east, we find a gradual advance in civilization; the Tshi-speaking peoples being the least, and the Yoruba-speaking peoples the most, advanced.
