Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is English translation of the Third Chapter (Sipihr) of Amir Khusrau's Persian Mathnawi, the Nuh-Sipihr(also known as the Sultan-Namah) which is the most important and the most famous of his works. It was written in the year A.H. 718/1318 A.D. at the instance of the ruling Khalji Sultan Qutbu'd-Din Mubarak Shah, to whom it is dedicated. The Nuh-Sipihr was composed when Khusrau was 65, and a matured and accomplished poet, and this work is, undoubtedly, an excellent piece of Persian literature. Though designed to record, in the spirit of history. The principal events of the reign of Mubarak Shah, upon whom he showers extra-lavish eulogies, the Nuh-Sipihr is more important for its description of India and its people, their knowledge and learning, arts and sciences, its fauna and flora, and almost all good points which make India the Paradise on earth. Khusrau was patriot to the core and his personality is most brilliantly reflected in this work. He sings a thousand songs in praise of his motherland (watan) and exerts his wits to prove India's superiority to all other countries of the world. The Nuh-Sipihr is divided into nine chapters, each dedicated to a sky; thus the first chapter is dedicated to the Ninth and the highest sky, the second to the Eighth, third to the Seventh, and so on, in a descending order. Hence, the title of the work: Nuh-Sipihr (Nine Skies). Title of each chapter is given in a beautiful couplet; thus there are nine chapter- couplets. Sub-headings have also been given in each chapter, each sub-heading also being a couplet. In all, there are 52 topics in the Nuh-Sipihr. The figure 52 is considered auspicious in India and the distribution of the work into 52 headings is symbolic. It is the third Chapter which mostly deals with India and the things Indian and, by far, this is the most important chapter of this composition. The present work is, essentially, a translation of this chapter. The Persian text of the Nuh-Sipihr edited by Muhammad Wahid Mirza (OUP Calcutta 1950) has been used for this translation. It has been referred to, hereinafter, in this work, as NS. It excludes the last two sub-headings of the Third Chapter which are related to the military campaigns of Deogiri and Telingana. Thus, it is translation of the NS pp. 147-195 (49 pages). Besides, 14 couplets of the Ninth Chapter (Topic No.51 NS, pp.442-43) have also been translated here under chapter-VIII. Important material, not covered by the main text (NS, 147-195) which was lying scattered in the whole work has also been collected and arranged in three Appendices C, D and E, e.g. 'To the Hindu Singer'; 'Khusrau's Description of the Buildings of Delhi'; and 'Khusrau's Vindication of India's Sovereignity'. These would be immensely useful in the present context. This work has been divided into eight chapters, each with a suitable heading in accordance with its subject-matter. Comprehensive explanatory notes have been given side by side. Page numbers in the margin refer to Wahid Mirza's Persian edition of the Nuh-Siphir (i.e. the NS), to facilitate checking with the original text. This is not a literal translation. The spirit of the text has been followed and attempt has been made to express the real meaning of a statement which the poet had intended to convey to his readers through poetic hyberboles, symbols and riddles. This is an attempt, in fact, to bring to light Khusrau'smarvellous experiment in the thought, now called Nationalism, which is as good a piece of Cultural History of Medieval India, as it is of Persian literature. This is, pure and simple, a historical writing and, at times, the literary aspect, not being feasible in the present context, has been superseded. This is how, 'literature' can be used as a source of History.

Book excerpt: TWO MASTER SUFI POETS & FRIENDS OF DELHI AMIR KHUSRAU & HASAN DEHLAVI Selected Poems & BiographiesTranslation & Introduction Paul SmithIn Delhi in the 13th century the great Sufi Master Nizam al-Din Auliya of the Chistiyya order had two famous disciples who were also poets: Amir Khusrau, the 'Parrot of India' and Hasan Dehlavi, the 'Sadi of India' who remained close friends all their lives. Amir Khusrau composed over 90 books and was a musician who invented the sitar as well as being an historian, and many other occupations... a truly 'universal man'. He composed ghazals, ruba'is, many masnavis and in most other forms of Persian poetry. Hasan Dehlavi born in the same year as Khusrau was a supreme master of the ghazal and also composed a famous book of stories and sayings of their Spiritual Master, Nizam al-Din Auliya. Book excerpt: The definitive translation by Dick Davis of the great national epic of Iran—now newly revised and expanded to be the most complete English-language edition A Penguin Classic Dick Davis—“our pre-eminent translator from the Persian” (The Washington Post)—has revised and expanded his acclaimed translation of Ferdowsi’s masterpiece, adding more than 100 pages of newly translated text. Davis’s elegant combination of prose and verse allows the poetry of the Shahnameh to sing its own tales directly, interspersed sparingly with clearly marked explanations to ease along modern readers. Originally composed for the Samanid princes of Khorasan in the tenth century, the Shahnameh is among the greatest works of world literature. This prodigious narrative tells the story of pre-Islamic Persia, from the mythical creation of the world and the dawn of Persian civilization through the seventh-century Arab conquest. The stories of the Shahnameh are deeply embedded in Persian culture and beyond, as attested by their appearance in such works as The Kite Runner and the love poems of Rumi and Hafez. For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Book excerpt: FIVE FAMOUS ALLEGORIES IN SUFI POETRY Conference of the Birds; Secrets of Birds, Flowers, Nature, Animals & Insects; Cat & Mouse; The Fish; The Spider. Translations & Introductions by Paul Smith Farid al-din 'Attar (d. 1221) was a grear Sufi poet who composed over 5o books. His most loved, apart from his ghazals is 'The Conference of the Birds' in masnavi (rhyming couplets) form (translated here by Edward FitzGerald) that would influence all the following poets in their writing of Sufi philosophy in the way of allegories, using Nature. Azz-eddin al-Muqaddasi (d. 1280) is famous for one book, his 'Secret of Birds, Flowers' etc. in prose and poetry. "It has been said, perhaps with truth, that there is no document of such age to touch this one for a combination of mystical insight and understanding of human psychology." K. Winstone-Hamilton. Mouse & Cat by Obeyd Zakani is a satirical, epic allegory that was influential at the time it was composed (14th c.) and has remained so for the past 600 years. It is more than just a story for children (that some say brought about the cartoon of Tom & Jerry)... it is a story of the stupidity of the false power of those in power and a warning to all that such blind ambition always leads to destruction at the hands of one even more powerful. Sufi poet Shah Da'i (1406-1464) takes his clue from 'Attar and tells the marvellous allegory of the fish who go in search of an answer to their problem from the Ancient Wise Fish. Iran's recent great female poet Parvin Etesami (1907-1941) tells the simple but deep allegory of the lazy man and the hard-working spider in such a clever and engrossing way that her reason for telling it is subtle but truly enlightening. The correct rhymes and hpefully, the meanings are achieved. ILLUSTRATED. Large Format Paperback 7" x 10" 460 pages. COMMENTS ON PAUL SMITH'S TRANSLATION OF HAFIZ'S 'DIVAN'. "It is not a joke... the English version of ALL the ghazals of Hafiz is a great feat and of paramount importance. I am astonished." Dr. Mir Mohammad Taghavi (Dr. of Literature) Tehran. "Superb translations. 99% Hafiz 1% Paul Smith." Ali Akbar Shapurzman, translator of many mystical works in English into Persian. Paul Smith (b.1945) is an Australian poet, author and translator of many books of Sufi poets of the Persian, Arabic, Urdu, Turkish, Pashtu and other languages... including Hafiz, Sadi, Nizami, Rumi, 'Attar, Sana'i, Jahan Khatun, Obeyd Zakani, Mu'in, Amir Khusrau, Nesimi, Kabir, Anvari, Ansari, Jami, Omar, Seemab and others and his poetry, fiction, plays, biographies, children's books and screenplays.

Book excerpt: 'Stories and food remain the same, only faces change, and those too only vaguely. The same faces keep coming back every few generations to eat the same food and live out the same stories.' Ayesha realizes that her relationship with food has made her obese and this realization takes her on a journey of self-discovery where she learns to fall in love with food not through gluttony, but by understanding its sensuous journey and evolution. In her life, feast runs parallel to the tales of people, and sometimes becomes the cerebral voice relating its journey over time and regions, telling stories of the people to whom it provides nourishment and nurturing. Travelling in time, Ayesha and Feast present scenarios of hospitality, generosity and warmth of the people of the subcontinent; through seasons, traditions and celebrations. Soon Ayesha comes to appreciate how food brings with it interesting stories, tying various emotions together-celebratory, jubilant, sorrowful and the ordinary. The history of regional cuisine, the multitude of tastes and flavours, and the passions they evoke, have a deep impact on Ayesha. She eventually comes to understand that her primary relationship is with food, and until that is not healthy, nothing else will be. Away from Ayesha's voice, Tirmizi's account is often omniscient, telling tales of a different time, stepping into another past, and then jumping to the present, voicing the evolution of food and its impact on Ayesha, and the relationships she has with others. Additionally, mouth-watering recipes of traditional dishes from the subcontinent make for a delightful read. In Tirmizi's deft hands, Feast is as a feast should be: endearing and unputdownable.

Book excerpt: THE BOOK OF BIDEL DEHLAVI Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Mirza Abdul-Qader Bidel (1644-1721) is one of the most respected poets from Afghanistan. In the early 17th century, his family moved from Balkh to India, to live under the Mughul dynasty. He was born and educated near Patna but spent most of his life in Dehli. In his later life he spent time travelling and visiting ancestral lands. His writings in Persian are extensive, being one of the creators of the 'Indian style'. Bidel's 16 books of poetry contain nearly 147,000 couplets. With Ghalib he is considered a master of the 'Indian Style' of the ghazal. He had complicated views on the nature of God, heavily influenced by the Sufis. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept as well as the beauty and meaning of these often mystical poems including ghazals, ruba'is, qit'as, bino rhymes, masnavis, mukhammas.
