Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Great Religions and the Religion of the Future This book is based upon a series of addresses on "The World's Great Religions," delivered, without notes, on successive Sunday evenings in the winter of 1921 at the Meetinghouse of the Society for Ethical Culture of New York. Several hundred signed requests for their publication were received by the author, but because of the pressure of imperative duties only those addresses included in the Semitic group were written out aid are here reproduced as nearly as possible in their original form, together with the introductory and closing lectures of the series. What has been here essayed is a presentation, not only of what the great Semitic religions stand for, but also, and more especially, of their distinctive features. That which differentiates each from all the rest is summed up in the sentence printed under each chapter-title. The reader is respectfully requested to remember that while the author is identified with the Society for Ethical Culture, this organization is not to be regarded as in any way sponsor for his views. A cardinal characteristic of the Society for Ethical Culture is the freedom of its fellowship. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religions of the World To some it may seem unnecessary to treat the religion of the Hebrews, Judaism, and Christianity in a textbook which forms a part Of an educational series in which whole volumes are devoted to these subjects, but no book on the religions Of the world would be complete from which a treatment Of these great religions was absent, and it Often gives the student a new sense Of the value Of these religions to study them briefly in comparison with the other religions Of the world. If the time devoted to the course is too brief to permit the study of so many religions, and if the religions of Israel and Christianity are studied in other parts Of the curriculum, chapters iv, v, and xv may be omitted from the course. Brahmanism and Buddhism, in other words, are pan theistic religions. Book excerpt: "When Joseph Nathaniel Beckles registered for the draft in the 1942, he rejected the racial categories presented to him and persuaded the registrar to cross out the check mark she had placed next to Negro and substitute "Ethiopian Hebrew." "God did not make us Negroes," declared religious leaders in black communities of the early twentieth-century urban North. They insisted that so-called Negroes are, in reality, Ethiopian Hebrews, Asiatic Muslims, or raceless children of God. Rejecting conventional American racial classification, many black southern migrants and immigrants from the Caribbean embraced these alternative visions of black history, racial identity, and collective future, thereby reshaping the black religious and racial landscape. Focusing on the Moorish Science Temple, the Nation of Islam, Father Divine's Peace Mission Movement, and a number of congregations of Ethiopian Hebrews, Judith Weisenfeld argues that the appeal of these groups lay not only in the new religious opportunities membership provided, but also in the novel ways they formulated a religio-racial identity. Arguing that members of these groups understood their religious and racial identities as divinely-ordained and inseparable, the book examines how this sense of self shaped their conceptions of their bodies, families, religious and social communities, space and place, and political sensibilities. Weisenfeld draws on extensive archival research and incorporates a rich array of sources to highlight the experiences of average members."--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Great Religions: An Essay in Comparative Theology HE first six chapters of the present volume are com posed from six articles prepared for the Atlantic Monthly, and published in that magazine in 1868. They attracted quite as much attention as the writer antici pated, and this has induced him to enlarge them, and add other chapters. His aim is to enable the reader to become acquainted with the doctrines and customs of the principal religions of the world, without having to con sult numerous volumes. He has not come to the task without some preparation, for it is more than twenty five years since he first made of this study a speciality. In this volume it is attempted to give the latest results of modern investigations, so far as any definite and trust worthy facts have been attained. But the writer is well aware of the difficulty of being always accurate in a task which involves such interminable study and such an amount of details. He can only say, in the words of a Hebrew writer: If I have done well, and as is fitting the story, it is that which I desired but if slenderly and meanly, it is that which I could attain unto.
