Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After learning of atomic physics, H. G. Wells began to think of its potential impact on human society. In The World Set Free, atomic energy causes massive unemployment, shaking the already fragile social order. The ambitious powers of the world decide to seize the opportunity to compete for dominance, and a world war breaks out, echoing the looming Great War about to ignite in 1914. Waking to the catastrophe, humanity begins the hard search for a way into a better future. The novel traces a soldier, an ex-king, a despot, and a sage through a profound transformation of human society, and we gain a window into Wells’ own thoughts and hopes along the way. With one prophetic stroke, Wells gives the first detailed depiction of atomic energy and its potential destructive power, and predicts the use of the air power in modern warfare. He may have even directly influenced the development of nuclear weapons, as the physicist Leó Szilárd, shortly after reading the novel in 1932, then conceived of harnessing the neutron chain reaction critical to the development of the atom bomb. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: "The World Set Free" is a technology fiction novel written by means of H. G. Wells. This pioneering work is extraordinary for its prediction of nuclear weapons long before they have become a fact, making it a visionary piece of literature. Set in the early 20th century and later into the 21st century, the radical affords a global where scientific advancements result in the introduction of atomic bombs, referred to as "atomic bombs" inside the book. These bombs, as soon as unleashed, have devastating and long-lasting outcomes, reshaping the course of human history. Wells explores the political, social, and ethical ramifications of this powerful new weapon, depicting a global in consistent turmoil and battle. Amid the chaos, the story follows a cast of characters, such as scientists and global leaders, as they grapple with the adverse ability of atomic energy. "The World Set Free" now not simplest serves as a cautionary story about the risks of unchecked scientific development but also as a commentary at the need for global cooperation and disarmament to prevent catastrophic consequences. It's worth noting that H. G. Wells' novel is taken into consideration a precursor to the real-international development and use of nuclear weapons all through World War II.

Paris is engulfed by an atomic maelstrom, Berlin is an ever-flaming crater, the cold waters of the North Sea roar past Dutch dikes and sweep across the Low Countries. Moscow, Chicago, Tokyo, London, and hundreds of other cities become radioactive wastelands. Governments topple, age-old cultural legacies are destroyed, and the stage is set for a new social and political order.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chilling, futuristic novel, written in 1913, was incredibly prophetic on a major scale. Wells was a genius and visionary, as demonstrated by many of his other works, but this book is clearly one of his best. He predicts nuclear warfare years before research began and describes the chain reactions involved and the resulting radiation. He describes a weapon of enormous destructive power, used from the air that would wipe out everything for miles, and actually used the term "atomic bombs." This book may have been at least part of the original inspiration for the development of atomic weapons, as well as presenting many other ideas that would ultimately come to pass. Some ideas may still be coming, including a one-world government referred to as The World Republic, that will attempt to end all wars. Herbert George Wells, better known as H. G. Wells, was an English writer best known for such science fiction novels as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man. He was a prolific writer of both fiction and non-fiction, and produced works in many different genres, including contemporary novels, history, and social commentary. Wells was an outspoken socialist and a pacifist, and his later works became increasingly political and didactic. His middle period novels (1900-1920) were more realistic; they covered lower middle class life and the 'New Woman' and the Suffragettes. Along with Jules Verne, Well is often referred to as "The Father of Science Fiction."
