Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Ricketts was a man of remarkable versatility. In the 1890s he ranked with Aubrey Beardsley as a powerful influence on book illustrators, and in his work for the theatre he rivalled Edward Gordon Craig. As an art critic he was compared with his exact contemporary Roger Fry; as a connoisseur he could contest the view of Bernard Berenson. In The World of Charles Ricketts Joseph Darracott explores and illustrates Ricketts?s major areas of artistic commitment and considers his significance in relation both to his contemporaries and to later generations. Although Ricketts and his close friend Charles Channon are mentioned in many memoirs of London in the 1890s, they have remained little known. Yet Ricketts's achievements are striking. His illustrations for The Vale Press and for other publishers are remarkable for their directness. His book on Titian was unequalled in its understanding of the Italian master. His stage work included the set and costume designs for the first production of George Bernard Shaw's St Joan and for a new production in the 1920s of The Mikado by Gilbert & Sullivan. Ricketts and Shannon were in their time among the most knowledgeable connoisseurs of Oriental, particularly Japanese, art. The majority of items in their Oriental collection was left to the British Museum, while their Old Master drawings and many other elements of their collection were bequeathed to Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. Such was Ricketts?s reputation that, in 1915, he was offered, and turned down, the position of Director of the National Gallery in London. But later he became the advisor to the National Gallery of Canada in its formative years. Ricketts was a key figure in the London art world from the 1890s to 1930 as an illustrator and painter, jewellery and theatre designer, art critic and collector. His circle of friends included Oscar Wilde, Walter Sickert, W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw and William Rothenstein who remembered Ricketts as 'the artistic Warwick of the age'

Epistles to family members, often tender and humorous, add dimension and depth to Steinbeck's mythologized depictions of Ricketts." "Editor Katharine A. Rodger has enriched the correspondence with an introduction, a biographical essay, and a list of works cited. The book will be important for students of John Steinbeck and the development of 20th-century American fiction, as well as for those interested in the history of science, especially in the fields of marine biology and ecology."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anonymous manuscript play has long been the subject of scholarly dispute regarding its relationship with Shakespeare's Richard II. This edition, which thoroughly re-examines the text, situates the play within its historical and political context, relating it to the genre of chronicle drama to which it belongs. The manuscript is of particular interest in that it appears to have been used in the playhouse over a considerable period of time and contains what seems to be evidence of the theatre practice of the time. The play is also of special interest for its skilful and original handling of source material which may well have influenced Shakespeare's Richard II. The extensive appendices drawn from Holinshed, Grafton and Stow provide the reader with the opportunity to investigate the manner in which the dramatist has shaped the material. The editors argue for the play's stage-worthiness and dramatic complexity, suggesting that its range both of dramatic tone and social inclusiveness indicate the work of a dramatist of considerable skill and subtlety, equal or superior to the Shakespeare of the Henry VI plays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joe Ricketts, founder of TD Ameritrade, shares the epic inside story of how a working-class kid from the Nebraska prairie took on Wall Street’s clubby brokerage business, busted it open, and walked away a billionaire. Joe Ricketts always had the gift of seeing what others missed. The son of a house builder, he started life as a part-time janitor, but by the age of thirty-three he saw the chance to challenge the big brokerage firms by offering Americans an inexpensive way to take control of their own stock trading. Nowadays, we take for granted that Main Street is playing right there on Wall Street, but Ricketts made that happen. His company, begun with $12,500 borrowed from friends and family, took off like a rocket thanks to an early embrace of digital technology and irreverent marketing. But Ameritrade also faced a series of near-disasters: the SEC almost shut him down; his partners tried to force him out because of his relentless risk-taking; penny brokers swindled the company; the crash of 1989 nearly cost him everything; and he was almost shut down again when a customer committed massive fraud. By the time of the dot-com bust, he had proven that his strategy based on frontier values could survive just about anything. The Harder You Work, The Luckier You Get offers a view inside Joe Ricketts’ mind, giving readers a visceral understanding of how entrepreneurs think and act differently from the rest of us—how they see the horizon where we just see a spreadsheet. As unvarnished as the prairie he comes from, Ricketts also talks honestly about his shortcomings as a manager, the career sacrifices his wife made for his business, the complexity of being a father, and the pain of splitting with his mentor and of his brother’s death from AIDS. Overcoming these and other challenges, he built a company now worth $30 billion. A must-read for anyone who’s ever dreamed of starting their own business, The Harder You Work, The Luckier You Get is the ultimate only-in-America story.

Book excerpt: Familiar narratives about the nature of English modernism, &"tradition,&" and &"periodization,&" together with the &"literary&" character of English art from the mid-nineteenth to the early twentieth centuries, are abandoned in this innovative and important book. In their stead, David Peters Corbett proposes a new way of looking at this painting from the Pre-Raphaelites to the Vorticists. Arguing that art history has been too reluctant to confront the fundamental question of how and what the consistency and application of paint signifies, Corbett investigates the work of English artists&—among them Rossetti, Burne-Jones, Leighton, Watts, Whistler, Sickert, and the modernists of 1914 &—through a historical examination of the meanings of the visual in English culture. By revealing that for many artists and thinkers the visual promised to deliver a more profound understanding of the world than language, the book offers a new reading of the art of the period between 1848 and the First World War.
