Book excerpt: A collection of Kipling's strangest tales with almost every one accompanied by a linked poem. As an SF fan I am of course delighted that the very first tale in the collection is science fiction "As Easy as A.B.C." the sequel to his "With the Night Mail" It also includes a depiction of hatred on the home front in "Mary Postgate" and contrasting humour in an extended revenge prank aimed at a whole town "The Village that Voted the Earth was Flat". One exceedingly mad tale made no sense the first three times I read it but became much (but not entirely) clearer when I discovered that the key unwritten word was witchcraft. However I will not give the title of that story so I don't entirely spoil it (Peter Dunn)

This book approaches Kipling as a writer who, from the outset of his career, sensed a potential or actual horror at the heart of things. It examines Kipling's search for meaning, a research pursued on the political, moral, and religious planes, through original and highly sophisticated explorations of history and myth. It presents Kipling as a person who knew and understood his own suffering and used it in his search for strategies to deal with the temptations of pessimism that he had known and also the prevailing temptations in a political and intellectual crisis he felt obliged to address.

"Departmental Ditties," the first section, is made up of satirical poems that parody the administrative and bureaucratic features of British colonial life in India, the country where Kipling spent a large portion of his formative years. This section's poetry frequently offers amusing perspectives into the daily life of colonial establishment figures such as soldiers and government officials. The narrative and lyrical poetry in the collection's second section, "Ballads and Barrack Room Ballads," depict the experiences of British army soldiers. These poems explore the friendships, struggles, and distinctive features of military life while combining pathos, humour, and astute observations of human nature. All things considered, Kipling's "Departmental Ditties and Ballads and Barrack Room Ballads" exhibits his wit, astute social commentary, and masterful ability to capture the myriad personalities and settings of late 19th-century British colonial and military life.
