Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of Stevenson’s first published works, "New Arabian Nights" is divided into two volumes of loosely connected short stories. There is no Scheherazade this time, but Stevenson chooses to present a variety of perspectives that merge together into a larger whole. The stories follow the characters’ various adventures in Europe, shrouded in mystery and romance. Irony and humour go hand in hand, turning this early writerly product of Stevenson into an entertaining, widely-read, and definitely recommended piece of fiction not only for Stevenson’s fans, but for short story genre aficionados as well. Some of the stories included are "The Suicide Club", "The Pavilion of the Links", and "A Lodging for the Night". Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was a Scottish writer of novels, poems, essays, and travel books. Due to poor health, he spent much of his time abroad, where he became part of important literary circles. Though his writing has often been considered entertainment, author Henry James aligned Stevenson’s works to his own. His most famous novels are Treasure Island (1883) and the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its vivid descriptions of courtly society, gardens, and architecture in early eleventh-century Japan, The Tale of Genji—recognized as the world’s first novel—has captivated audiences around the globe and inspired artistic traditions for one thousand years. Its female author, Murasaki Shikibu, was a diarist, a renowned poet, and, as a tutor to the young empress, the ultimate palace insider; her monumental work of fiction offers entry into an elaborate, mysterious world of court romance, political intrigue, elite customs, and religious life. This handsomely designed and illustrated book explores the outstanding art associated with Genji through in-depth essays and discussions of more than one hundred works. The Tale of Genji has influenced all forms of Japanese artistic expression, from intimately scaled albums to boldly designed hanging scrolls and screen paintings, lacquer boxes, incense burners, games, palanquins for transporting young brides to their new homes, and even contemporary manga. The authors, both art historians and Genji scholars, discuss the tale’s transmission and reception over the centuries; illuminate its place within the history of Japanese literature and calligraphy; highlight its key episodes and characters; and explore its wide-ranging influence on Japanese culture, design, and aesthetics into the modern era. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana}

The outer door stood open; the door of the cabinet was ajar; and there, in a small but very high apartment, the young man left them once more.“He will be here immediately,” he said, with a nod, as he disappeared.Voices were audible in the cabinet through the folding doors which formed one end; and now and then the noise of a champagne cork, followed by a burst of laughter, intervened among the sounds of conversation. A single tall window looked out upon the river and the embankment; and by the disposition of the lights they judged themselves not far from Charing Cross station. The furniture was scanty, and the coverings worn to the thread; and there was nothing movable except a hand-bell in the centre of a round table, and the hats and coats of a considerable party hung round the wall on pegs.

Visit us online at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - During his residence in London, the accomplished Prince Florizel of Bohemia gained the affection of all classes by the seduction of his manner and by a well-considered generosity. He was a remarkable man even by what was known of him; and that was but a small part of what he actually did. Although of a placid temper in ordinary circumstances, and accustomed to take the world with as much philosophy as any ploughman, the Prince of Bohemia was not without a taste for ways of life more adventurous and eccentric than that to which he was destined by his birth. Now and then, when he fell into a low humour, when there was no laughable play to witness in any of the London theatres, and when the season of the year was unsuitable to those field sports in which he excelled all competitors, he would summon his confidant and Master of the Horse, Colonel Geraldine, and bid him prepare himself against an evening ramble. The Master of the Horse was a young officer of a brave and even temerarious disposition. He greeted the news with delight, and hastened to make ready. Long practice and a varied acquaintance of life had given him a singular facility in disguise; he could adapt not only his face and bearing, but his voice and almost his thoughts, to those of any rank, character, or nation; and in this way he diverted attention from the Prince, and sometimes gained admission for the pair into strange societies. The civil authorities were never taken into the secret of these adventures; the imperturbable courage of the one and the ready invention and chivalrous devotion of the other had brought them through a score of dangerous passes; and they grew in confidence as time went on.

Book excerpt: Robert Louis Stevenson's early stories collected under the title The New Arabian Nights were originally split into two volumes. The first, which is the better part, is further split into two series of interlinking tales titled "The Suicide Club" and "The Rajah's Diamonds." These stories are golden, full of surprises and ingenious twists. Jorge Luis Borges once wrote that all of G.K. Chesterton's fictional output was encapsulated in RLS's New Arabian Nights. This is a grand endorsement since Borges adored both authors. It's true, I think, that you will find echoes of Stevenson in Chesterton's The Man Who Was Thursday and his Father Brown tales.The second half of New Arabian Nights is comprised of several stand-alone stories. The best (and longest) of these, about a solitary wanderer who gets caught up in an international revenge plot, is "The Pavilion on the Links." The opening chapters are especially good (clearly influenced by Thoreau, whom RLS was reading about this time), though convention creeps in shortly afterward.

This book was released on 2023-12-19 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology unites the timeless allure of 'Arabian Nights or One Thousand and One Nights', translated and edited by Andrew Lang, with 'New Arabian Nights' by Robert Louis Stevenson, presenting an opulent tapestry of fantasy, adventure, and moral intricacies. The collection offers a panoramic view of not only the traditional tales that have fueled the imaginations of readers for centuries but also Stevenson's unique Victorian twist on the genre. These narratives span a gamut of literary styles from the mystical and whimsical, to gripping, suspense-filled dramas, showcasing the expansive range and adaptability of these stories across different cultural and temporal landscapes. The contributing authors, Lang and Stevenson, bring their distinct backgrounds to the compilation, reflecting the broader historical, cultural, and literary movements of their times. Lang's work as a folklorist and poet is evident in his sensitive approach to translation and adaptation, striving to maintain the spirit of the original tales. Stevenson, a luminary of the Scottish literary renaissance, imbues the collection with a darker, more complex psychological depth, expanding the narrative scope of the traditional tales. Together, these authors enhance and challenge our understanding of the 'Arabian Nights' stories, inviting readers to consider the thematic and stylistic shifts over time. For those intrigued by the power of storytelling and its ability to cross cultural boundaries, this anthology is an invaluable treasure. Readers are afforded the unique opportunity to traverse the rich landscapes of Middle Eastern folklore through the Victorian lens, gaining diverse perspectives on universal themes of morality, adventure, and human folly. This collection not only fosters a deeper appreciation for the art of storytelling across different periods but also encourages a dialogic engagement with the texts, making it an essential read for both aficionados of classic literature and newcomers eager to explore the storied tapestry of 'Arabian Nights'.
