The lofty peaks shoot up cloudward in rows. If one foot higher, they would touch the heaven. The dead pine trees cling to the cliff, hanging headmost over the abyss. The sparkling cascades and the spurting torrents vie with one another to make the bellowing din. Anon, a giant boulder tumbles from the crag-head; a thousand mountain walls resound like thunder. 0 you wayfarers from afar, why do you come hither on this direful road? The gate of the Sword Parapet stands firm on its frightful height. One man defending it, a thousand men could not break it open. And the keepers of the gate are not of your kin, They may turn, I fear, to wolves and leopards. The Steep Road to Shuh Fleeing at morn before the savage tigers, Fleeing at eve before the huge serpents, Men are killed and cut up like hemp, While the beasts whet their fangs and lick the blood. Though many pleasures there may be in the brocade city of Shuh, It were better to return to your house quickly. The road to Shuh is more difficult to climb than to climb the steep blue heaven. I shrug my shoulders and heave a long sigh--gazing into the west. This is one of the most admired and most difficult poems of Li Po, certain portions of it being as vague as they are beautiful. Some commentators maintain that this was written at the time of the An Lu-shan rebellion, when the emperor Hsuan Tsung fled to Ssuchuan, to which course Li Po was opposed; but being in no position to declare his opinion openly, the poet voiced it thus in verse covertly. The poem hints at the double danger for the emperor in leaving his capital to the rebels who are tigers and serpents as well as in trusting his person to the hands of the strangers of Shuh, who might turn to wolves and leopards, while...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poet Li Po: A. D. 701-762 At this time, he says at the time of Tu Fu), Li Po from Shantung was also celebrated for his remarkable writings, and the names of these two were often coupled together. In my judgment, as regards impassioned vigour of style, freedom from conventional restraint, and skill in the mere description of exterior things, his ballads and songs are certainly worthy to rub shoulders with Fu. But in disposition of the several parts of a poem, in carrying the balance of rhyme and tone through a composition of several hundred or even in some cases of a thousand words, in grandeur of inspiration combined with harmonious rhythm and deep feeling, in emphasis of parallel clauses, in exclu sion of the vulgar or modern - in all these qualities Li is not worthy to approach Fu's front hedge, let alone his inner chamber 1 Subsequent writers, adds the T'ang History (the work in which this essay is preserved), have agreed with Yuan Chen. Wang An-shih (1021 the great reformer of the eleventh century, observes: Li Po's style IS swift, yet never careless; lively, yet never informal. But his intel lectual outlook was low and sordid. In nine poems out or ten he deals with nothing but wine or women. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Li Po (AD 701-62) and Tu Fu (AD 712-70) were devoted friends who are traditionally considered to be among China's greatest poets. Li Po, a legendary carouser, was an itinerant poet whose writing, often dream poems or spirit-journeys, soars to sublime heights in its descriptions of natural scenes and powerful emotions. His sheer escapism and joy is balanced by Tu Fu, who expresses the Confucian virtues of humanity and humility in more autobiographical works that are imbued with great compassion and earthy reality, and shot through with humour. Together these two poets of the T'ang dynasty complement each other so well that they often came to be spoken of as one - 'Li-Tu' - who covers the whole spectrum of human life, experience and feeling.

Book excerpt: Classical Chinese poetry reached its pinnacle during the T'ang Dynasty (618-907 A.D.), and the poets of the late T'ang-a period of growing political turmoil and violence-are especially notable for combining strking formal inovation with raw emotional intensity. A. C. Graham’s slim but indispensable anthology of late T’ang poetry begins with Tu Fu, commonly recognized as the greatest Chinese poet of all, whose final poems and sequences lament the pains of exile in images of crystalline strangeness. It continues with the work of six other masters, including the “cold poet” Meng Chiao, who wrote of retreat from civilization to the remoteness of the high mountains; the troubled and haunting Li Ho, who, as Graham writes, cultivated a “wholly personal imagery of ghosts, blood, dying animals, weeping statues, whirlwinds, the will-o'-the-wisp”; and the shimmeringly strange poems of illicit love and Taoist initiation of the enigmatic Li Shang-yin. Offering the largest selection of these poets’ work available in English in a translation that is a classic in its own right, Poems of the Late T’ang also includes Graham’s searching essay “The Translation of Chinese Poetry” as well as helpful notes on each of the poets and on many of the individual poems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Li Po (A.D., 701-762) lived in T’ang Dynasty China, but his influence has spanned the centuries: the pure lyricism of his poems has awed readers in China and Japan for over a millennium, and through Ezra Pound’s translations, Li Po became central to the modernist revolution in the West. His work is suffused with Taoism and Ch’an (Zen) Buddhism, but these seem not so much spiritual influences as the inborn form of his life. There is a set-phrase in Chinese referring to the phenomenon of Li Po: “Winds of the immortals, bones of the Tao.” He moved through this world with an unearthly freedom from attachment, and at the same time belonged profoundly to the earth and its process of change. However ethereal in spirit, his poems remain grounded in the everyday experience we all share. He wrote 1200 years ago, half a world away, but in his poems we see our world transformed. Legendary friends in eighth-century T’ang China, Li Po and Tu Fu are traditionally celebrated as the two greatest poets in the Chinese canon. David Hinton’s translation of Li Po’s poems is no less an achievement than his critically acclaimed The Selected Poems of Tu Fu, also published by New Directions. By reflecting the ambiguity and density of the original, Hinton continues to create compelling English poems that alter our conception of Chinese poetry.
