Download or read book Language and Style of the Vedic Rsis written by Tat?i?a?na I?A?kovlevna Elizarenkova and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizarenkova, perhaps the greatest living scholar of the Rgveda and certainly its greatest linguist, explains here the relationships between a very complicated grammatical system and the peculiarities of style of the archaic religious poetry. The laudatory hymn is treated as an act of verbal communication between the poet Rsi and the deity, with the hymn itself transmitting certain information from man to god. From this viewpoint, the hymn is used as a means to maintain a circular exchange of gifts between the Rsis and their gods.

Book excerpt: This book has two parts; in the first part we explore the possibility of Hindu Nagas migrating to South America and Central America and establishing Mayan, Aztec, Olmec, Inca and other civilizations. In the second part we read all about Rishis (seers), Asuras, Rakshasas (demons), Gandharvas, Apsaras and Kinnaras. There are lot of names of non-Divine names in the rig Veda and the Atharvana Veda. We have no satisfactory explanations for those words. I have collected as many names as possible and tried to give a Dictionary of Demons. It is only a beginning.

Book Synopsis Word, Chant, and Song by : Harold Coward
Download or read book Word, Chant, and Song written by Harold Coward and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible introduction to the centrality of word, chant, and song in the Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic, and Sikh traditions. In academic religious studies and musicology, little attention has been given to chanted word, hymns, and songs, yet these are often the key spiritual practices for lay devotees. To address this gap in knowledge, Harold Coward presents a thematic study of sacred sound as it functions in word, chant, and song for devotees in the Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic, and Sikh traditions. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction of a particular tradition’s word/scripture, followed by case studies showcasing the diversity of understanding and the range of chant and song in devotee practice, and concludes with a brief illustration of new trends in music and chant within the tradition. Written in a style that will appeal to both scholars and lay readers, technical terms are clearly explained and case studies explicitly include devotees’ personal experiences of songs and chants in public and private religious ritual. “Accessible, informative, and interesting, this is a fine contribution.” — Anantanand Rambachan, author of A Hindu Theology of Liberation: Not-Two Is Not One

Download or read book Vedic Physics written by Keshav Dev Verma and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume on Vedic Physics by Keshav Dev Verma is indeed a unique attempt to interpret the ancient Indian literature by defining various symbols, concepts and terminology occurring in Vedic hymns and other texts. While accepting Maharsi Dayananda's view that Vedas are the repository of all true sciences, the author does examine this statement with a view to test it on the hard rock of truth. Shri Verma has selected the Sankhya-Patanjala system that explains the physical world (Universe) on the basis of Cosmic evolution; the Vaisesika-Nyaya expounds the methodology and elaborates the concepts of physics, chemistry and mechanics. Shri Verma has very systematically tried to interpret the Sankhya aphorisms and concludes that the ultimate ground to which the manifested world can be traced is Prakrti having three attributes-Sattva (existence), energy at rest or Rajas (energy that which is efficient in a phenomenon and is characterised by a tendency to move and overcome any resistance) and Tamas (mass or inertia) which resists the Rajas to do work and also resists Sattva from conscious manifestation.

Book Synopsis Ancient Indian Astronomy and Contributions of Samanta Chandra Sekhar by : L. Satpathy
Download or read book Ancient Indian Astronomy and Contributions of Samanta Chandra Sekhar written by L. Satpathy and published by Alpha Science Int'l Ltd.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samanta Chandra Sekhar (1835-1904) occupies a special position in Ancient Indian Astronomy, being the last link in a long chain of illustrious astronomers commencing with Aryabhata (5th century AD). The book describes how he identified errors accumulated over the ages, eradicated them and brought the subject to final perfection. The discovery of the three anomalies in the motion of the moon, hiking of the Earth-Sun distance by more than ten times the value taken by his predecessors and his novel planetary model with heliocentric motion of the planets are some of his major contributions. How astronomy developed in ancient civilizations of the world, and the frontier topics in astrophysics like Dark Matter etc. discussed in a few articles help in developing an integral perspective of the reader.
Book Synopsis Encyclopedia of Hinduism by : Denise Cush
Download or read book Encyclopedia of Hinduism written by Denise Cush and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 1130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Hinduism contains over 900 entries reflecting recent advances in scholarship which have raised new theoretical and methodological issues as well as identifying new areas of study which have not been addressed previously. The debate over the term 'Hinduism' in the light of post-Orientalist critiques is just one example of how once standard academic frameworks have been called into question. Entries range from 150-word definitions of terms and concepts to 5,000-word in-depth investigations of major topics. The Encyclopedia covers all aspects of Hinduism but departs from other works in including more ethnographic and contemporary material in contrast to an exclusively textual and historical approach. It includes a broad range of subject matter such as: historical developments (among them nineteenth and twentieth century reform and revival); geographical distribution (especially the diaspora); major and minor movements; philosophies and theologies; scriptures; deities; temples and sacred sites; pilgrimages; festivals; rites of passage; worship; religious arts (sculpture, architecture, music, dance, etc.); religious sciences (e.g. astrology); biographies of leading figures; local and regional traditions; caste and untouchability; feminism and women's religion; nationalism and the Hindu radical right; and new religious movements. The history of study and the role of important scholars past and present are also discussed. Accessibility to all levels of reader has been a priority and no previous knowledge is assumed. However, the in-depth larger entries and the design of the work in line with the latest scholarly advances means that the volume will be of considerable interest to specialists. The whole is cross-referenced and bibliographies attach to the larger entries. There is a full index.
