Book excerpt: What if you spoke and no one knew what you meant? Can you imagine the chaos and confusion of every word being misunderstood? The Zumans of the planet Zoogan experienced exactly this dilemma. The Zumans lived a peaceful and joyful life under an excellent Word Keeper by the name of Zeeper. Everything was clear and understood because Zeeper taught young and old Zumans the need for word rules to keep the order. All of the word rules were kept carefully in a large book called a Zuckle. However, Zeeper retires and Zeeber becomes the new Word Keeper, thanks to a fluke in the succession process. Of all Zumans, Zeeber is the laziest. In order to carry on with a carefree life, Zeeber decides to abolish all of the word rules. The result? Zoogan descends into chaos while all Zumans make up their own words and word rules. Soon, Zeeber realises that without rules, a carefree life is impossible-and the mess must be cleaned up. On the surface The Word Keeper is about why we have rules, and the consequences of a world without rules. Under the surface, this book is about how the author has struggled with dyslexia. There will be two versions of this book: a standard version and a version with a dyslexic-friendly font. James Burnell found this font easier for him to read. He hopes to support and encourage others with dyslexia. The Word Keeper is written in delightful rhyme, and is sure to become a family favourite.

Book excerpt: Shifting through tornado destruction for victims was heartbreaking and painful. Lamar searched homes, root cellars and the woods for survivors and identified the dead. Turning a body over revealing the face of a friend took a toll on Lamar Stein. Twenty four hours ago his feet hit the pine floor of his house on a warm morning with a clear blue sky and before noon this terror cut a path a mile wide through Alabama into Goshen. He and John Madison, a survivor, found forty five dead and just ten survivors before they saw another rescue party coming toward them. The county Sheriff and Piedmont police chief. Lamar compared notes with the sheriff and together they tallied a total of sixty one dead and twenty four survivors. Lamar told the sheriff he caught a gang of outlaws looting destroyed homes and robbing dead bodies. "A gunfight broke out with five of them and John Madison and me killed Victor Blackwebb, his son and three other outlaws who already shot the Bordens and robbed them." The sheriff determined Lamar and Madison acted in self defense and no charges would be brought against them. However, the police chief told Lamar he would be arrested for taking the law into his own hands and he would arrest him in Piedmont. While Lamar conversed with the sheriff and chief an unbelievable jailbreak was discovered in Piedmont. Shirley Locket went to the jail to feed prisoners dinner. Breakfast was left to Josh Johnson, the deputy sheriff guarding one killer and a cannibal. When she opened the door to the jail cells she found the body of the deputy and the dismembered body of the killer and the cannibal gone with no idea which way he went. A rider left out to find the sheriff and chief to report this disturbing to the chief. Lamar left before the news got to the sheriff and did not know the cannibal was on the loose. He continued toward home riding a horse and leading the outlaw's horses and his mules while the cry went out in Piedmont the cannibal escaped. As it turned out the cannibal made a dash for the cabin where he was captured with the hope he might find a body part he buried there to eat. The tornado left nothing at the cabin and sweep the ground clean forcing the cannibal to move west through the tornado path toward the home of Lamar Stein. Boogie Olderman, the cannibals name, practiced voodoo to disable his victims he needed to find one, and hunger pains had him on the move headed toward the smell of food. When he arrived at the Stein home watch dog guineas gave him away and he hide behind a fallen tree and watched a minute before he made a move on the Stein house. He rushed the kitchen door bars and shook hard unable to break in and broke out the door glass. Molly fired her thirty eight glancing a shot off his head and backed him off ten feet. Boogie sat down, pulled something from his pocket and in fifteen minutes Molly was light headed and faint as the cannibal chanted mumbo jumbo. She realized he made a doll in her image and put a spell on her. She began praying, quoting bible verses and the spell broke. Her prays boggled Boogie's mind and made him madder. He gave up on voodoo to search the barn and found a heavy hammer and come back to the house with a sledge. He beat the bars on the door but backed off When Molly fired and hit the cannibal with a glancing blow in the head. He backed off with slobber dripping off his chin, infuriated. Lamar heard the shot and was about ten minutes away and he dropped his string of horses and mules and rode hell bent toward his house. When his horse entered his yard the cannibal's sledge came down on his horse's head and sent it to the ground pinning him under the horse. Lamar's sawed off shotgun was in his hands but the cannibal circled behind him. Molly come out of the house with the Colt and put a bullet between the cannibal's eyes and stunted him. He backed him off and Molly took the twelve gage from Lamar's hands cut him in half.

Book excerpt: A beautifully illustrated coming-of-age graphic memoir chronicling how sports shaped one young girl’s life and changed women’s history forever. Growing up playing on a top national soccer team in the 1980s, Kelcey Ervick and her teammates didn’t understand the change they represented. Title IX was enacted in 1972 with little fanfare, but to seismic effect; between then and now, girls’ participation in organized sports has exploded more than 1,000 percent. Braiding together personal narrative, pop culture, literature, and history, Ervick tells the story of how her adolescence was shaped by this boom. Ervick also explores her role as a goalkeeper—a position marked by outsider status and observation—and reveals it has drawn some of the most famed writers of our time. With wit and poignant storytelling, The Keeper brings to life forgotten figures who understood the importance of athletics to help women step into their confidence and power—and push for equality. Full of 1980s nostalgia and heart, The Keeper is a celebration of how far we have come and a reminder of how far we have to go.
