A full-blooded Sioux, he was many things in the white man's world -- rodeo clown, painter, prisioner. But, above all, he was a holy man of the Lakota tribe. Seeker of Vision The story he tells is one of harsh youth and reckless manhood, shotgun marriage and divorce, history and folklore as rich today as ever -- and of his fierce struggle to keep pride alive, though living as a stranger in his own ancestral land.

Oops--it’s not a job at all. It’s an all-encompassing life, being a country woman on the ranch or farm, and with wit and equanimity like Gwen Petersen’s, it can be survived. In fact, with Petersen’s help, it can be drop-dead hilarious. A much-loved cowgirl scribe in rare form, Petersen eases us through the rigors of country living, from raising chickens to shoveling manure to cooking Rocky Mountain oysters. You’d think midwifing a calf was no laughing matter--until Gwen steps in with her expert advice. She has wise counsel for sharing the yard with a gaggle of ill-tempered geese; step-by-step instructions for harvesting pig manure; and sound advice for staying cool through haying season and coping with the chaos of Christmas on the ranch or farm. For good measure, the book includes poems and recipes that will transport you to a country state of mind--whether you hail from the city’s busiest streets or the ranch’s quietest gravel roads. Equal parts handy how-to advice, rural humor, philosophy, and fond farm nostalgia, How to Shovel Manure and Other Life Lessons for the Country Woman is all good.

As international flight attendants the world is their oyster – until Sera fell in love and settled for family life. Obsessed with keeping up appearances, Sera goes to extreme lengths to maintain the illusion of perfection, while Bella just wants to fly away from the responsibility of mothering her little sister, from the sadness of her broken marriage, and from memories of the past. Gathering her friends at Stitch 'n' Bitch is like therapy. There's a lot of talk, and not much knitting - and they wouldn't have it any other way. Ditzy Mallory has her own shocks in store, and single mum Chantrea agonises over work and childcare. Widowed single dad, Sam, is terrified of the dating scene, and Sera's uptight neighbour, Jacquline, has a little secret, one that could destroy her neatly ordered world. Meanwhile Joan, Sera's mother-in-law, watches then all and sniffs with disdain at their trivial worries. Sera wants to be perfect. Bella just wants to be free. Will the sisters get what they want?

Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller 'A sensation ... a rollicking tale well told' - The Times At the heart of Born to Run lies a mysterious tribe of Mexican Indians, the Tarahumara, who live quietly in canyons and are reputed to be the best distance runners in the world; in 1993, one of them, aged 57, came first in a prestigious 100-mile race wearing a toga and sandals. A small group of the world's top ultra-runners (and the awe-inspiring author) make the treacherous journey into the canyons to try to learn the tribe's secrets and then take them on over a course 50 miles long. With incredible energy and smart observation, McDougall tells this story while asking what the secrets are to being an incredible runner. Travelling to labs at Harvard, Nike, and elsewhere, he comes across an incredible cast of characters, including the woman who recently broke the world record for 100 miles and for her encore ran a 2:50 marathon in a bikini, pausing to down a beer at the 20 mile mark.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fidget of Fiddlewood" is a series of little episodes or vignettes centred around our family dog, Fidget, describing our rural wildlife as seen through his eyes. Fidget was once an energetic fellow, but the years are catching up with him and "having a nap" is now a frequent necessity. He still loves to sit and survey his domain and watch the activity around him, including all the native birds and animals of the area. Although he is a very curious fellow, he never attempts to get too close to his new-found friends. This little man started life on the street, hanging around with a gang of other dogs, and life was not very kind to him. He was a very frightened pooch when he found his new "family", but soon accepted that this was the very best place to be. My husband and I retired to this idyllic area on the Atherton Tablelands, in Far North Queensland, after years of moving around Australia. We live on three acres of ex-farmland, and have planted hundreds of rain forest trees to encourage the local wildlife. I am also a volunteer with a dedicated group of people committed to rain forest restoration on the Tablelands. The aim of the stories was to give our Grandchildren and other little ones an idea of life in this beautiful countryside. It is intended for Parents to read to children, say between 5 and 11 years of age, as bedtime stories, to introduce the young to our rich language and encourage them to read for themselves as they grow up. By taking part in Fidget's activities I have learnt so much about the wonderful rain forest and its inhabitants.

This is the book that can tell you how to spell, pronounce, and define over 5,000 terms relative to the American West. Want to know what a “breachy” cow is? Turn to page 43 to learn that it’s an adjective used to describe a cow that has a tendency to find her way through fences where she isn’t supposed to be. Describes some teenagers we know… Spend hours perusing the dictionary at random, or read straight through to give you a flavor of the West from its beginnings to contemporary days. Laced with photographs and maps, the Dictionary of the American West will make you sound like an expert on all things Western, even if you don’t know your dingus from a dinner plate. Compiled of words brought into English from Native Americans, emigrants, Mormons, Hispanics, migrant workers, loggers, and fur trappers, the dictionary opens up history and culture in an enchanting way. From “Aarigaa!” to “zopilote,” the Dictionary of the American West is a “valuable book, a treasure for any literate American’s library.” (Tony Hillerman)

Book excerpt: Despite increasing academic interest in both the study of masculinity and the history of consumption, there are still few published studies that bring together both concerns. By investigating the changing nature of the retailing of menswear, this book illuminates wider aspects of masculine identity as well as patterns of male consumption between the years 1880 and 1939. While previous historical studies of masculinity have focused overwhelmingly on the moral, spiritual and physical characteristics associated with notions of 'manliness', this book considers the relationship between men and activities which were widely considered to be at least potentially 'unmanly' - selling, as well as buying clothes - thus shedding new light on men's lives and identities in this period.
