Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from India's Women Tell Me simply how proud thou art, how sensitive, egotistical, mean, and indolent; and ask Me to come and help thee in all the efforts thou makest against it. Poor child, do not blush; there are in heaven many saints who had thy faults; they prayed to Me, - and little by little their faults were corrected. Do not hesitate to ask Me for blessings for the body and mind, for health, memory, success. I can give all things, and I always give when blessings are needed to render souls more holy. To-day, what wilt thou have, My child? If thou knewest how I long to do thee good Hast thou plans that occupy thee? Lay them all before Me. Do they concern thy vocation? What dost thou desire? Dost thou wish to give pleasure to thy mother, to thy family, to those on whom thou dost depend? What wouldst thou do for them? And for Me - hast thou no zealous thought for Me? Dost thou not wish to do a little good to the souls of thy friends whom thou lovest, and who have perhaps forgotten Me? Tell Me in whom thou art interested, what motives move thee, what means thou wouldst employ. Whom dost thou wish interested in thy work? I am Master of hearts, My child, and lead them where I will. I will bring round thee all who will be necessary to thee. Be tranquil. Bring Me all thy failures, and I will show thee the cause of them. Hast thou not troubles? Oh, my child, tell them all to Me fully. Who has caused thee pain? Tell Me all, and thou wilt finish by adding that thou wilt pardon, thou wilt forget; and I will bless thee. Dost thou dread something painful? Is there in thy heart a vain fear which is not reasonable, but which is tormenting? Trust thyself wholly to My care. I am here. I see everything. I will not leave thee. Are there those near thee who seem less kind to thee than they have been, and whose indifference and neglect separate thee from them, while thou canst see nothing in which thou hast wounded them? Pray earnestly to Me for them, and I will bring them back to thee, if they are needed for thy life's sanctification. Hast thou not joys to make known to Me? Why dost thou not let Me share thy happiness? Tell Me what has happened since yesterday to cheer and console thee. Was it an unexpected visit which did thee good? a fear suddenly dissipated? a success thou thoughtest thou shouldst not reach? a mark of affection, a letter, a gift, which thou hast received? a trial which left thee stronger than thou supposed? I have prepared it all for thee. Thou canst show thy gratitude and give Me thanks. Hast thou promises to make to Me? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Some Distinguished Indian Women IN her Introduction, Mrs. Chapman expresses some fear lest people in England should begin to weary of the subject of Indian women, so much having been written of late concerning them and their peculiar trials. But this little book needs no apology; and I, for one, have never read anything more interesting or more likely to be useful to the cause of female education in India than this small collection of biographies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lighted to Lighten: The Hope of India; A Study of Conditions Among Women in India What could a few foreign women do among those millions? But the great, silent revolution has begun. Eastern women are seeking self-determination as na tions seek it. They are asserting rights to soul and mind and body. They refuse to be chattels, and going out to release these millions come these little groups of Christian college girls who are to furnish leader ship. Have we no part? Yes, as allies we are needed as never before. Unless from the faculties of our colleges, as well as from our student volunteers, ade quate aid is sent at once these little groups may fail. This is your moral equivalent of war. To go and help them in this Day which is their Day of Decision requires vision, devotion, a glorious giving of life which will count just in proportion as the need is immediate, the battle in doubt, failure possible. Mis sion Boards must go haltingly for lack of women and of funds until groups of women from colleges in America hear the call of Christ and follow Him, for God Himself will not do this work alone. He has chosen that it shall be done through you. From our colleges and medical schools recruits and funds must be sent until those who are in the new colleges over there are trained and ready to win India for their Master. To bring them over here for training is not altogether good. There are dangers in this our age of jazz. It is not good to send out very young girls to a far country during the formative years lest a strange language and customs and a new civilization should unfit them to go back to their Main Street. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paper Read by Colonel Temple, on the Women of India, at the Royal Palace Hotel, Kensington, on March 8th, 1899 An orthodox Indian woman's life in its ordinary course is divided into two clearly defined parts, which are quite distinct, though separated from each other only by the fateful day on which she first goes to take up her abode within her father-in Iaw's family. Note that it is not called in the Indian languages her husband's family, for that, under the Indian family system, it can seldom be in the case of a bride. Childhood rather than girlhood is the heyday of the Indian woman. Free to play as she pleases, with plenty of companions, for children galore can hardly ever be wanting in a family which all live together, from oldest to youngest; free to run in and out of the houses of friends, never bothered to learn anything except what she can pick up from the women about her, never worried with caste restrictions, never asked to do more in the way of labour than to help in the housework, petted by her parents, spoilt by her aunts and uncles, and beloved by her brothers, an Indian girl child is indeed happy - as children count happiness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grounded in a variety of rich and diverse source materials such as periodicals meant for women and edited by women, song and cookbooks, book reviews and court records, the author of this pioneering study mobilises claims for the existence of an Indian feminism in the nineteenth century. Anagol traces the ways in which Indian women engaged with the power structures-both colonialist and patriarchical-which sought to define them. Through her analysis of Indian male reactions to movements of assertion by women, Anagol shows that the development of feminist consciousness in India from the late nineteenth century to the coming of Gandhi was not one of uninterrupted unilinear progression. The book illustrates the ways in which such movements were based upon a consciousness of the inequalities in gender relations and highlights the determination of an emerging female intelligentsia to remedy it. The author's innovative study of women and crime challenges the notion of passivity by uncovering instances of individual resistance in the domestic sphere. Her study of women's perspectives and participation in the Age of Consent Bill debates clearly demonstrates how the rebellion of wives and their assertion in the colonial courts had resulted in male reaction to reform rather than the current historiographical claims that it was a response purely to threats posed by 'colonial masculinity'. Anagol's investigation of the growth of the women's press, their writings and participation in the wider vernacular press highlights the relationship between symbolic or 'hidden' resistance and open assertion by women.
