What is curious is that the disappearance coincided with a mysterious visit from a Native American who came bearing an eagle feather and a cryptic message. Then there’s the cousin Aletta never knew she had (a young political revolutionary on the run), who suddenly appears at her doorstep and shares a shocking secret about their family. One thing’s for sure: Aletta’s poised for change. Her no-good alcoholic ex-husband is stirring up trouble, a new lover turns out to be bad news, and she can’t bear another day of lying to unsuspecting customers. As Aletta digs deeper into her family history, her mission becomes clear: If she ever hopes to regain her clairvoyance, she must go to New Mexico to uncover her great grandmother Adelaide’s fascinating but troubling past. So with some kooky friends dying for an adventure outside the confines of their small-town world, Aletta sets off for the southwest, where she will finally come to understand her special talent and the real meaning of life.

Book excerpt: The bible of music's deceased idols—Jeff Buckley, Sid Vicious, Jimi Hendrix, Tupac, Elvis—this is the ultimate record of all those who arrived, rocked, and checked out over the last 40-odd years of fast cars, private jets, hard drugs, and reckless living. The truths behind thousands of fascinating stories—such as how Buddy Holly only decided to fly so he'd have time to finish his laundry—are coupled with perennial questions, including Which band boasts the most dead members? and Who had the bright idea of changing a light bulb while standing in the shower?, as well as a few tales of lesser-known rock tragedies. Updated to include all the rock deaths since the previous edition—including Ike Turner, Dan Fogelberg, Bo Diddley, Isaac Hayes, Eartha Kitt, Michael Jackson, Clarence Clemons, Amy Winehouse, and many, many more—this new edition has been comprehensively revised throughout. An indispensable reference full of useful and useless information, with hundreds of photos of the good, the bad, and the silly, this collection is guaranteed to rock the world of trivia buffs and diehards alike.

Book excerpt: California has been invaded by three imperial powers: Spain, Mexico, and the United States. Deep California examines in depth the lingering psychological traumas and motifs emanating from that long history of conquest. These unhealed events have not been left in the past: they recur symbolically again and again, growing in intensity as the overbuilt land and its distracted occupiers unconsciously but definitively demonstrate that environmental justice and social justice can no longer be thought of as separate. Pacing crusaders and colonizers from county to county along El Camino Real, Deep California studies the lingering impact of continuous oppression of people and places as images and themes of displacement and exile filter down into architecture, agriculture, politics, art, culture, psychology, and even folklore and dream. Yet within the shadows cast over California also dwell resistance, humor, irony, tragedy, and hope for more heartfelt and soulful connections to this story-rich "land of the sundown sea." "History" is an inadequate term for such a sweeping and deep discovery of how the past informs the present. This work deserves to be read widely by all Californians and Americans, and taken to heart, and the hard lessons applied to all places we inhabit on this stolen land. -Lesley Thomas, author of Flight of the Goose (Far Eastern Press, 2005) "A monumental and much-needed study in depth of the conquest, occupation, traumatization, and animation of the mission cities and counties of coastal California, places which have worked their way into our unsuspecting psyches." -Linda Buzzell, MA, MFT, co-editor of Ecotherapy: Healing with Nature in Mind (Sierra Club Books, 2009)

Book excerpt: John Denver was America's biggest-selling solo star of the '70s. In commercial terms he was on a par with Sinatra in the '40s, Elvis in the '50s and the Beatles in the '60s. He experimented with a variety of styles and won fans from such diverse worlds as folk, pop and country music. Beneath the often tranquil surface of his music and his clear, clean tenor voice, however, lurked a darker side to Denver's character. The writer of 'Annie's Song', one of the most straightforward and personal expressions of love, became a wife-beater. The man who cavorted with the Muppets was an alcoholic. The committed environmentalist had his own plane, the most polluting form of transport. John Collis has delved deep to discover exactly who John Denver was. By unravelling the complexities of the singer's personality and background, he reveals Denver as a complicated, contradictory man, much more intriguing than the sometimes placid surface of his music might suggest. Millions of people around the globe found something in his music that touched their souls; Collis, by charting Denver's career and development as an artist, explores his legendary contribution not only to the world of music but also to the society of which he was a protagonist and a victim.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book I consider one of my best and most intense. The false truth about what’s going on in our society, and the world, has gotten so ridiculous, that I felt I had to write this to advise believers and non-believers the truth as Jesus states in the word, in John 14:6 & 8:32. It was upsetting me that the truth was not coming from the politicians and from the pulpit. It took President Trump (thank God for sending him), to expose the corrupt state wide media, and the corruption in Washington D.C.I give the plain truth, from the word not only about the evil Demoncrats, but I also talk about subjects like religion, race, crime, etc. topics that most people will not talk about, because they are afraid there not “politically correct”. I don’t have to be politically correct; I have to be Biblically correct, this is Gods world, not Washingtons. I start off with Interest, which God meant for good, but man has corrupted it. Did you know that you can learn from a spider how to be closer to God and live a more fulfilled Christian life of discipleship? Did you know you can learn from the child and the dog about yourself? There are many other gems wisdom that you will love and learn from. In my other books you can find on Amazon you would get a great blessing as well. There are the three volumes on “Balance, The Spider and the Saint, When I look up, and the childrens book, “Charlie the Spider and friends. I wrote them differently then other books out there. There are jokes, stories, quotes, to keep you entertained. Be Blessed my find, enjoy my books, but your relationship with God is even greater, that’s first Priority. Thank you for reading this text, and enjoy my friend. See you on the way up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Fannie Flagg and Lorna Landvik, The Saints and Sinners of Okay County is a heartfelt and compelling debut novel with an unforgettable heroine. It’s the story of a woman whose ability to see the futures of others leads her right back into her own troubled past. It’s the summer of 1976, and it seems like the entire state of Oklahoma is celebrating America’s bicentennial. But in the small town of Okay, Aletta Honor has much more on her mind than flags and fireworks. She’s pregnant with her fourth child and hasn’t seen her husband, Jimmy, in weeks. Although she can guess where the hound dog has parked his red-white-and-blue van—in front of the local gin mill or outside the home of yet another woman for a little Yankee Doodle Diddle. Discretion is not in the man’s constitution. Flat broke and desperate for some cash, Aletta decides to set up a food stand on the front lawn during the Okay Czech Festival. But when a woman touches her hand in sympathy, Aletta is completely unsettled. She never touches anyone outside her family—if she does, she gets overwhelming visions of their lives and futures. It started when she was a young girl and has scared her ever since. Now Aletta immediately sees the woman in a tragic accident, and gives her a warning that will save her life. When the woman returns the next day to thank her, Aletta figures out how to save her own life. With all the courage she can muster—figuring the townsfolk will most likely think she’s nuts—she puts a sign in the front yard: ALETTA HONOR. PSYCHIC READER. DROP-INS WELCOME. But doing readings for people opens a door she thought she had locked long ago, as memories of a terrible event come flooding back. She may not be able to see into her future, but she realizes she must face the demons in her past if she’s going to make a new life for herself and her kids. First, though, she’ll have to tell a few fortunes. . . . Poignant, touching, and full of the kind of wisdom that can only come straight out of the heartland, Dayna Dunbar’s The Saints and Sinners of Okay County is a wonderful novel of a woman who confronts pain in order to reclaim her belief in herself, lay her past to rest, and bring order back to a life that has veered too far off track.

Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Singing With the Top Down comes a poignant tale about makeshift families and the healing power of friendship. Fifteen-year-old runaway Chancy Deel arrives in the picture-perfect town of Wenonah, Oklahoma, needing a helping hand. It’s just her luck to get it—from a cranky old man named Max Boyle, who is hardly the answer to her dreams. After losing his beloved wife, Max has only his dog, Alfie, and his home of fifty years to hang on to, and now Adult Protective Services is convinced he can’t manage on his own. Max would rather end it all than resort to assisted living. So when he finds a throwaway kid sleeping in his garage, Max seizes one last chance for both of them. Giving Chancy a home just might prevent him from losing his. In securing a place to live, these two solitary souls will discover something much rarer—a place to belong . . . and a heart to care. “Debrah Williamson creates characters who are spunky, flawed, courageous, loveable, and above all real.”—Lisa Wingate, author of Tending Roses

Book excerpt: At a time in the 1950s when America is a little more innocent, two children and their flamboyant aunt head toward California in a Buick Skylark convertible. Pauly Mahoney knows if she doesn’t fret about her family, no one will. Certainly not her unstable mother or fun-loving father, who can’t seem to make ends meet without her help. It’s Pauly’s job to hold the family together—until a hot summer night in Tulsa, Oklahoma, when her parents are killed in a freak carnival accident and Pauly’s world turns upside down. Abandoned by indifferent relatives, Pauly and her brother are headed nowhere…until their unfamiliar Aunt Nora volunteers to take them in. No one seems to care that their unlikely guardian angel is a free-spirited, chain-smoking movie extra with no visible means of support. But when Aunt Nora points her stylish car toward California, Pauly and her brother find themselves on a rollicking cross country journey with a woman who will show them that promises can be kept through laughter and tears—and whose open heart has room for both of them and more. “The most appealing heroine since Scout Finch… I'm telling everyone I know: don't miss this one!”—Cassandra King, author of The Same Sweet Girls
