Book excerpt: To Janey Larkin, the blue willow plate was the most beautiful thing in her life, a symbol of the home she could only dimly remember. Now that her father was an itinerant worker, Janey didn't have a home she could call her own or any real friends, as her family had to keep moving, following the crops from farm to farm. Someday, Janey promised the willow plate, with its picture of a real house, her family would once again be able to set down roots in a community. Blue Willow is an important fictional account of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, and has been called The Grapes of Wrath for children. It won a Newbery Honor and many other awards.

Book excerpt: In many ways, Willow Pattern Story, over a thousand years old, is a Chinese Romeo and Juliet, filled with love and tragedy, but uniquely Chinese. The Willow Pattern Play is a new spin on an ancient tale. Taking a traditional tale and breathing new life into it is a familiar approach to writing a play, one that has been in existence for thousands of years. Like the story, the play hopes to entertain classrooms and offer students a range of stimulating activities. This play is one of my first plays for publication, and it is hoped students enjoy the opportunity to learn about unique story behind Willow Pattern China.

As his guards help the city fend off a popular uprising, an aristocrat from one of the oldest families in China suffers an "accident" in a deserted mansion. In The Willow Pattern, the illustrious judge uses his trademark expertise to unravel the mysteries of the nobleman, a shattered vase, and a dead bondmaid. Along the way he encounters a woman who fights with loaded sleeves, a nearly drowned courtesan, and an elaborate trap set for a murderer. Packed with suspense, violence, and romance, The Willow Pattern won’t disappoint Judge Dee’s legions of loyal fans. "The China of old, in Mr. van Gulik’s skilled hands, comes vividly alive again."—Allen J. Hubin, New York Times Book Review

Book excerpt: The Mandarin's Daughter willow plate story was first performed on stage at Punch's Playhouse and Strand Theatre Friday, December 26, 1851, It is a light-hearted and picturesque interpretation of the Blue Willow plate story with musical interludes. The Strand Theatre, near St. Clement's Church, was originally called "Punch's Theatre", and was particularly adapted to the representation of burlesques, extravaganzas, farces, and light interludes according to Cruchley's London in 1865: A Handbook for Strangers, 1865, featuring information about Victorian London.Blue Willow Ware is a chinoiserie-style china pattern that has been around for over 200 years. The pattern was created by the engraver, Thomas Minton, and was inspired by Chinese ceramics decorated with landscape scenes that were fashionable in England during the 1780's. The blue willow pattern features a garden scene with a bridge, pagoda, a zig-zag bamboo fence, willow trees, birds, flowing water and a boat. The better-known version is Spode's English Willow transferware pattern. The blue willow design was probably inspired by either a Japanese folk tale called "The Green Willow" or a Chinese fairy tale about two young lovers who were forbidden to marry due to class differences. The story line of The Mandarin's Daughter, Koong-see, features a beautiful only child of a wealthy mandarin who falls in love with her father's accountant administrator, Chang, an intelligent young man who is of a lower class than Koong-see therefore considered unworthy of a prominent Mandarin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A map of the mutual influence of Bloomsbury, the Crescent Moon Society, and modernism in English and Chinese culture Lily Briscoe's Chinese Eyes traces the romance of Julian Bell, nephew of Virginia Woolf, and Ling Shuhua, a writer and painter Bell met while teaching at Wuhan University in China in 1935. Relying on a wide selection of previously unpublished writings, Patricia Laurence places Ling, often referred to as the Chinese Katherine Mansfield, squarely in the Bloomsbury constellation. In doing so, she counters East-West polarities and suggests forms of understanding to inaugurate a new kind of cultural criticism and literary description. Laurence expands her examination of Bell and Ling's relationship into a study of parallel literary communities—Bloomsbury in England and the Crescent Moon group in China. Underscoring their reciprocal influences in the early part of the twentieth century, Laurence presents conversations among well-known British and Chinese writers, artists, and historians, including Virginia Woolf, Vanessa Bell, G. L. Dickinson, Xu Zhimo, E. M. Forster, and Xiao Qian. In addition, Laurence's study includes rarely seen photographs of Julian Bell, Ling, and their associates as well as a reproduction of Ling's scroll commemorating moments in the exchange between Bloomsbury and the Crescent Moon group. While many critics agree that modernism is a movement that crosses national boundaries, literary studies rarely reflect such a view. In this volume Laurence links unpublished letters and documents, cultural artifacts, art, literature, and people in ways that provide illumination from a comparative cultural and aesthetic perspective. In so doing she addresses the geographical and critical imbalances—and thus the architecture of modernist, postcolonial, Bloomsbury, and Asian studies—by placing China in an aesthetic matrix of a developing international modernism.

Book excerpt: This book provides a more rational and systematic explanation for the origin and evolution of the Chinese narrative tradition, based on studies of Chinese literary classics, local culture and items such as bronze wares and porcelain vessels with “portrayed stories.” By doing so, it uncovers forgotten interconnections and reestablishes obscured or unacknowledged lines of descent. Furthermore, it makes an initial study of acoustic narrative. Going beyond the field of literature, it employs tools and materials from diverse fields such as anthropology, religious studies, mythology, linguistics, semiotics, folklore and local culture. The book also offers an archeological inquiry into the knowledge found in various narrative texts, objects with “portrayed stories” and perceptions with “relevant plots.” Providing a wealth of insights, inspiring investigative methods and practical tools that can be applied in narrative studies, the book is an essential resource for researchers and students in the fields of comparative literature, narratology and ancient Chinese literature.
