Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to the different conditions of time, language, country, and race under which the various books of the Holy Scriptures were written, it is impossible that they should be rightly understood at the present day without some study of the customs and manners of Eastern peoples, as well as of the countries in which they lived. The Oriental character of the scriptural writings causes them to abound with metaphors and symbols taken from the common life of the time. They contain allusions to the trees, flowers, and herbage, the creeping things of the earth, the fishes of the sea, the birds of the air, and the beasts which abode with man or dwelt in the deserts and forests. Unless, therefore, we understand these writings as those understood them for whom they were written, it is evident that we shall misinterpret instead of rightly comprehending them. The field which is laid open to us is so large that only one department of Natural History—namely, Zoology—can be treated in this work, although it is illustrated by many references to other branches of Natural History, to the physical geography of Palestine, Egypt, and Syria, the race-character of the inhabitants, and historical parallels. The importance of understanding the nature, habits, and uses of the animals which are constantly mentioned in the Bible, cannot be overrated as a means of elucidating the Scriptures, and without this knowledge we shall not only miss the point of innumerable passages of the Old and New Testaments, but the words of our Lord Himself will often be totally misinterpreted, or at least lose part of their significance. The object of the present work is therefore, to take in its proper succession, every creature whose name is given in the Scriptures, and to supply so much of its history as will enable the reader to understand all the passages in which it is mentioned.

Book excerpt: When Private Investigator Jackson Douglas is approached by "history hunter" Joel Robinson with a legend about Crusader treasure, he is more than a little wary. But Joel seems legitimate and believes in Jackson's investigative skills. And he's paying very well. So Jackson joins Joel and his team in their pursuit to decipher the riddle of "The Holy Trinity," believed to be the key to locating the treasure. Questions loom over the expedition from the beginning. What exactly is the treasure? What power did the Crusaders believe it possessed? Why did they go to such great lengths to conceal it? Who else is after the treasure, and what danger do they pose to the team? And which of his teammates can Jackson trust . . . and which can't he? The quest will take Jackson from a prestigious art gallery in New York City to a secret vault high in the Alps to the very land the Crusaders and Muslims fought over centuries ago, testing his deductive abilities-and his faith-at every turn.

Book excerpt: A pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Israel) is the ultimate goal of every Christian and Jewish pilgrim. The Holy Land is the setting of most of the stories in the Scriptures. To enter the Promised Land and see the sites of familiar Bible stories is like traveling back in time. Pilgrim Tours provides the pilgrim with the opportunity to journey back to the time of Abraham, Elijah, Jesus and many other sacred luminaries of Biblical history. The most notable places on the tour are: (1) Caesarea, the famous port city; (2) Mount Carmel, where the prophet Elijah demonstrated the preeminence of his God; (3) Megiddo, where archaeologists have unearthed twenty levels of civilizations; (4) Tel Dan, a nature reserve and the ancient site of a cultic high place; (5) Banias (Caesarea Philippi), the site of a Hellenic Temple of Pan; (6) Capernaum, known as the town of Jesus; (7) the Sea of Galilee, where a song-filled cruise on the waters that Jesus walked on brings joy and peace to the pilgrim's soul. The best guide in the world, Marian Gavish, brings the history, culture, and religions of Israel into a comprehensive and understandable format with her instructive talks and discussions as we journey through: (8) Beit Shean, a Decapolis city at the juncture of the Jezreel and Jordan valleys; (9) Masada, where the Jewish Zealots made their last stand against the Romans; (10) Qumran, site of the famous Dead Sea Scrolls; (11) Bethany Beyond Jordan, the place of the original baptism; (12) Jerusalem, from the Mount of Olives to the Via Dolorosa; (13) the Temple Mount; (14) museums - the Israel Museum and Yad HaShem. Many more places and experiences highlight a once in a lifetime pilgrimage that is thoroughly covered in this book.

Book excerpt: This book describes and compares the circumstances and lived experiences of religious minorities in Tunisia, Morocco, and Israel in the 1970s, countries where the identity and mission of the state are strongly and explicitly tied to the religion of the majority. The politics and identity of Jews in Tunisia and Morocco and Arabs in Israel are, therefore, shaped to a substantial degree by their status as religious minorities in non-secular states. This collection, based on in-depth fieldwork carried out during an important moment in the history of each community, and of the region, considers the nature and implications of each group’s response to its circumstances. It focuses on both the community and individual levels of analysis and draws, in part, on original public opinion surveys. It also compares the three communities in order to offer generalizable insights about ways the identity, political culture, and institutional character of a minority group are shaped by the broader political environment in which it resides. The project will appeal to scholars and students in the fields of Middle Eastern and North African studies, Judaic studies, Islamic Studies, minority group politics, and international relations and the Arab-Israeli conflict.

The Holy Spirit uses God’s Word to grow believers in their faith and increase their passion for Jesus. As each volume focuses on a particular book in the Bible, believers will find the study useful for the enrichment of daily devotional reading or as the basis for small group Bible study discussion. In this volume, readers will be led through a daily study of the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel. 40 Days in 1 Samuel breaks down the book of 1 Samuel into chunks that present the “Big Picture” of the passage, then “Digging Deeper” into that section, and then moving to help the reader into “Living Out” the lessons that are taught each day.
