Book excerpt: On a long car journey to Norfolk, Little Jo’s repetitive chant, ‘We’re going to the wide, flat land, the wide, flat land, the wide, flat land,’ resonates through the car, much to her older brother’s annoyance. Hailing from Surrey, the siblings have always been enchanted by the charm of East Anglia’s countryside, their anticipation heightened by the nostalgic tales of their mother’s own childhood holidays on the north-east coast. Upon arrival at their quaint holiday cottage, a chance encounter with a neighbour sets them on a path that will change their lives forever. The Pritchards are soon faced with the unsettling shadows of their mother’s past. Through this unexpected journey, they learn the essence of overcoming, the grace of empathy, and the power of loving support in encouraging others. Amidst the expansive tranquillity of the wide, flat land, they discover a healing peace, a calming beauty, a secure haven, and a renewed hope for the future of their extended family.

Book excerpt: 'Jake Fiennes is changing the face of farming in Britain... a revolutionising force' Isabella Tree Our relationship with our land is broken: we must heal it. Jake Fiennes is on a mission to change the face of the English countryside. As Conservation Manager at Holkham in Norfolk, one of the country's largest historic country estates, his radical habitat restoration and agricultural work has nurtured its species and risen its crop yields - bringing back wetlands, hedgerows, birds and butterflies over 25,000 acres of land. But this isn't rewilding - there is no 'wild' in Britain anymore. Mass farming, crop science and industrial chemicals have destroyed the majority of our natural landscape and wildlife over the last century. Land Healer is the story of Fiennes's ambition to bring back our flora and fauna - by reclaiming our traditions and trialling new experiments which could restore our symbiosis with our land, and save our shared future. Following the farming year and the natural cycle of the seasons, Land Healer chronicles a life of conservation lived at the edges, and is a manifesto for rethinking our relationship with the natural world before it's too late.

This book was released on 1965 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The devices installed in a space rocket can be divided into three classes: 1) an observing device used to observe physical phenomena in a high-altitude atmosphere and a counting device used to detect the operational condition of a rocket, 2) a teletransmitter used to send observed data to the ground stations, and 3) a radar transmitter to give instantaneous information about the trajectory of a space rocket. Of course, a rocket has equipment in addition to these three fundamental devices in order to ensure all devices and the flight operating efficiently and effectively. Some special techniques are needed to obtain an effective flight for a space rocket having all those measuring and counting and communication devices on board. And some other techniques are needed to get effective operation of the measuring and communication devices. For example, we have to open a window on the nose of the rocket to expose a measuring device to the outside atmosphere, or stretch out an antenna to send radio waves to ground stations. All techniques described here will be under the general heading of device- operation techniques. In the following sections, we shall see the achievements of device- operation techniques; and the author's personal opinion on the future trend of development in the technical field will be briefly described.

Download or read book Flatland written by Edwin Abbott and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2009-11-13 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flatland (1884) is an influential mathematical fantasy that simultaneously provides an introduction to non-Euclidean geometry and a satire on the Victorian class structure, issues of science and faith, and the role of women. A classic of early science fiction, the novel takes place in a world of two dimensions where all the characters are geometric shapes. The narrator, A Square, is a naïve, respectable citizen who is faced with proof of the existence of three dimensions when he is visited by a sphere and is forced to see the limitations of his world. The introduction to this Broadview Edition provides context for the book’s references to Victorian culture and religion, mathematical history, and the history of philosophy. The appendices contain contemporary reviews; extracts from the work of fellow mathematical fantasy writer/mathematician Charles Hinton; Hermann von Helmboltz’s “The Axioms of Geometry” (1870); and autobiographical passages from Abbott’s The Kernel and the Husk (1886).
Book Synopsis Science of Societal Safety by : Seiji Abe
Download or read book Science of Societal Safety written by Seiji Abe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book covers comprehensive but fundamental principles and concepts of disaster and accident prevention and mitigation, countermeasures, and recovery from disasters or accidents including treatment and care of the victims. Safety and security problems in our society involve not only engineering but also social, legal, economic, cultural, and psychological issues. The enhancement needed for societal safety includes comprehensive activities of all aspects from precaution to recovery, not only of people but also of governments. In this context, the authors, members of the Faculty of Societal Safety Science, Kansai University, conducted many discussions and concluded that the major strategy is consistent independently of the type and magnitude of disaster or accident, being also the principle of the foundation of our faculty. The topics treated in this book are rather widely distributed but are well organized sequentially to provide a clear understanding of the principles of societal safety. In the first part the fundamental concepts of safety are discussed. The second part deals with risks in the societal and natural environment. Then follows, in the third part, a description of the quantitative estimation of risk and its assessment and management. The fourth part is devoted to disaster prevention, mitigation, and recovery systems. The final, fifth part presents a future perspective of societal safety science. Thorough reading of this introductory volume of societal safety science provides a clear image of the issues. This is largely because the Japanese have suffered often from natural disasters and not only have gained much valuable information about disasters but also have accumulated a store of experience. We are still in the process of reconstruction from the Great East Japan earthquake and the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident. This book is especially valuable therefore in studying the safety and security of people and their societies.

Book Synopsis Combating Mountaintop Removal by : Bryan T. McNeil
Download or read book Combating Mountaintop Removal written by Bryan T. McNeil and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on powerful personal testimonies of the hazards of mountaintop removal in southern West Virginia, Combating Mountaintop Removal critically examines the fierce conflicts over this violent and increasingly prevalent form of strip mining. Bryan T. McNeil documents the changing relationships among the coal industry, communities, environment, and economy from the perspective of local grassroots activist organizations and their broader networks. Focusing on Coal River Mountain Watch (CRMW), an organization composed of individuals who have personal ties to the coal industry in the region, the study reveals a turn away from once-strong traditional labor unions and the emergence of community-based activist organizations. By framing social and moral arguments in terms of the environment, these innovative hybrid movements take advantage of environmentalism's higher profile in contemporary politics. In investigating the local effects of globalization and global economics, McNeil tracks the profound reimagining of social and personal ideas such as identity, history, and landscape and considers their roles in organizing an agenda for progressive community activism.

This book was released on 2021-08-18 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions illustrated Edwin Abbott Abbott - Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions is a satirical novel. Written pseudonymously by "A Square", the book used the fictional two-dimensional world of Flatland to comment on the hierarchy of Victorian culture, but the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions. Although it did not achieve popular success on its publication in 1884, Flatland gained a broad audience after the publication of Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, which focused attention on the concept of a fourth dimension. The book enjoyed another renaissance with the advent of modern science fiction in the late 1930s and is now widely acknowledged as a pioneering work of mathematical fiction.
