Book Synopsis Crime Fiction since 1800 by : Stephen Knight
Download or read book Crime Fiction since 1800 written by Stephen Knight and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-09 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its appearance nearly two centuries ago, crime fiction has gripped readers' imaginations around the world. Detectives have varied enormously: from the nineteenth-century policemen (and a few women), through stars like Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple, to newly self-aware voices of the present - feminist, African American, lesbian, gay, postcolonial and postmodern. Stephen Knight's fascinating book is a comprehensive analytic survey of crime fiction from its origins in the nineteenth century to the present day. Knight explains how and why the various forms of the genre have evolved, explores a range of authors and movements, and argues that the genre as a whole has three parts – the early development of Detection, the growing emphasis on Death, and the modern celebration of Diversity. The expanded second edition has been thoroughly updated in the light of recent research and new developments, such as ethnic crime fiction, the rise of thrillers in the serial-killer and urban collapse modes, and feel-good 'cozies'. It also explores a number of fictional works which have been published in the last few years and features a helpful glossary. With full references, and written in a highly engaging style, this remains the essential short guide for readers of crime fiction everywhere!
Book Synopsis The Whispering House by : Elizabeth Brooks
Download or read book The Whispering House written by Elizabeth Brooks and published by Tin House Books. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eerie and addictive. . . . Like Wuthering Heights, The Whispering House is a melancholy novel, its characters filled with dark longings." — The New York Times Book Review From the acclaimed author of The Orphan of Salt Winds It was like holding a couple of jigsaw pieces in my palm, knowing there was a whole picture to be made, if I could only find the rest. Freya Lyell is struggling to move on from her sister Stella’s death five years ago. Visiting the bewitching Byrne Hall, only a few miles from the scene of the tragedy, she discovers a portrait of Stella—a portrait she had no idea existed, in a house Stella never set foot in. Or so she thought. Driven to find out more about her sister’s secrets, Freya is drawn into the world of Byrne Hall and its owners: charismatic artist Cory and his sinister, watchful mother. But as Freya lingers in this mysterious, centuries-old house, her relationship with Cory crosses the line into obsession and the darkness behind the locked doors of the estate threatens to spill out. In prose as lush and atmospheric as Byrne Hall itself, Elizabeth Brooks weaves a simmering, propulsive tale of art, sisterhood, and all-consuming love: the ways it can lead us toward tenderness, nostalgia, and longing, as well as shocking acts of violence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is about all of my dreams that I had that never came true. This book will also give the inside track of what I learned about me in my life as I travel through the journey of life. People have always talked about the truth about their life, but what about the whole truth, the good, the bad and the ugly? I am just a normal and regular person who is not perfect in no form shape or fashion. This book is just an insight of my life with all of the encounters coming from a very large family. By coming from a large family today caused many problems for me because I did not realize exactly how poor I was until I began to attend college. Not saying that most of our family didn't pull themselves out of their situations. Happiness came from the inside of your to come true. This book will show that I thought that it was the choices that I made, but in the end I found out that it wasn't only the choice, but it was other individual choices, but it was the decision of my parents that turned my life upside down and on its head. From my experience, as a child growing up here in America in the 60's and 70's life was to have dreams in our small little heads about becoming a fireman, sports photographer, doctor, or even a player playing sports. As a child having dreams are the responsibility of the parents to every effort to make their child dreams come true and this will make them successful and most of all very happy with their accomplishments. See I love the game of football and other sports as well, such as baseball, basketball and track and field, but football was my favorite. The reason that I loved football was my most favorite. The reason it was my favorite because on the football field this was where the smaller player could get even with the bigger bullies who wanted to talk trash to some of the small players. While I played the game of football in the little Pop Warner Football League, I silence the bigger boys without talking trash. As this book unfolds you will find out that other people in my life and bad timing played a role in my unsuccessful dreams. Then you will find out that my life was not only my decision alone. But on the side of all of this I had a good life and I maintained to stay happiness. Now if I had not exposed my life to you, many people would never know the pain and hardship that I experienced in my life time. I am still the same Darmonica who you have know in the past who love sports and love lending a helping hand where it's needed. For the love of life is to love yourself, help another and take the worst of life and make the best of it, and I did just that. Without my family and friends I would not be the person who I am NOW! That's why I say, Hold on, someone is on the other line!

Book Synopsis Fantasy Literature for Children and Young Adults by : Pamela S. Gates
Download or read book Fantasy Literature for Children and Young Adults written by Pamela S. Gates and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fantasy conjures up images of witches, fairies, dark woods, magic wands and spells, time travel, ghosts, and dragons. Each of us defines fantasy in a personal way, based on our life stories, experiences, hopes, dreams, and fears. Fantasy Literature for Children and Young Adults, helps teachers and students of literature to develop their own understandings of this broad genre in order to evaluate and promote the joy of fantasy in their classrooms. An excellent teaching tool, the discussions are organized around three categories of fantasy literature, including fairy/folktale; mixed fantasy (which includes journey, transformation, talking animal, and magic); and heroic-ethical; and they are supported by well-chosen examples of representative authors, critics, and theorists. With the assumption that the reader has no special knowledge of fantasy literature but has some previous exposure to the study of literature for children and young adults, this book focuses on reviewing texts that illustrate particular types of fantasy literature. The authors have an extensive knowledge of both classic and contemporary children's and YA titles, and they offer many insightful observations and details that make a book a particularly good classroom choice. Literature allows us to discuss controversial issues without making judgments; it allows us the opportunity to "experience" another time and space by providing a new lens through which to view; and it offers us a multitude of ways to come to appreciate and embrace the world of fantasy. Fantasy Literature for Children and Young Adults will help teachers and other readers to deepen their knowledge, appreciation, and pedagogical understandings of fantasy literature.
