Book excerpt: In this volume, Jason Radcliff offers an introduction, critical appreciation, and constructive extension of the Orthodox-Reformed Theological Dialogue spearheaded by Thomas F. Torrance in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Focusing upon the Greek Patristic foundations of the Dialogue, as seen particularly in the “shared rapport” between Torrance and Archbishop Methodios Fouyas as well as the monumental theological outcome of the Dialogue, “The Agreed Statement on the Holy Trinity,” a document that claims to cut behind the issue of the filioque, this book also highlights some of the notable conversations that went on “behind the scenes” of the Dialogue as seen in the photos, the unpublished Official Minutes, and correspondence between Torrance and other major figures, namely George Dragas, Methodios Fouyas, and The Patriarch of Constantinople himself, about such topics such as the Athanasian doctrine of the Trinity, Barthian Christocentrism, and John Zizioulas’ existentialism. The book includes selections from unpublished minutes and photographs as well as out-of-print documents—such as Torrance’s “Memoranda on Orthodox/Reformed Relations” and “Common Reflection” as well as “The Agreed Statement on the Holy Trinity.” Radcliff argues that the Dialogue’s ecumenical use and creative interpretation of the Trinitarian and Christocentric theology of the Greek Fathers is profoundly relevant for contemporary Trinitarian theology.

Book excerpt: Since Jesus’s resurrection, Christianity has expanded across the globe and shaped a vast array of groups and movements. A Survey of the History of Global Christianity, Second Edition, provides an overview of the Christian faith from the apostolic age to the global present. In a friendly and informative tone, author Mark Nickens outlines the historical context of important developments in doctrine and practice, including: o the persecution and resilience of the early church o the results of increasing papal power in Europe during the Middle Ages o the Reformation and later movements that influenced European Christianity o the various sects of American Christianity that arose in cycles of revival o an examination of Orthodoxy and the history of Christianity in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the West Indies. In addition to historical information, this book features quotes and spiritual lessons from noteworthy Christians throughout the centuries. By understanding how Christian doctrine has developed over the ages and across the globe, readers will better understand where their own faith tradition comes from.

Book excerpt: Colin Brown attempts to get inside Barth's mind: to see the main issues as he sees them, to try to bring into critical focus Barth's approach to the Christian message and to find out what can be learned from it. The Book is divided into four main sections. The first traces the course of Barth's life, outlines briefly his main writings, and sees how and why Barth has come to believe what he believes and think in the way he does. The second deals with the question of revelation, the third with his natural theology, the fourth with Barth's Christological approach to doctrine.

Book excerpt: The following dissertation concerning the Trinity, as the reader ought to be informed, has been written in order to guard against the sophistries of those who disdain to begin with faith, and are deceived by a crude and perverse love of reason. Now one class of such men endeavor to transfer to things incorporeal and spiritual the ideas they have formed, whether through experience of the bodily senses, or by natural human wit and diligent quickness, or by the aid of art, from things corporeal; so as to seek to measure and conceive of the former by the latter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of the Popes tells the story of the oldest living institution in the Western world—the papacy. From its origins in Saint Peter, Jesus' chief disciple, through Pope Benedict XVI today, the popes have been key players in virtually all of the great dramas of the western world in the last two thousand years. Acclaimed church historian John W. O'Malley's engaging narrative examines the 265 individuals who have claimed to be Peter's successors. Rather than describe each pope one by one, the book focuses on the popes that shaped pivotal moments in both church and world history. The author does not shy away from controversies in the church, and includes legends like Pope Joan and a comprehensive list of popes and antipopes to help readers get a full picture of the papacy. This simultaneously reverent yet critical book will appeal to readers interested in both religion and history as it chronicles the saints and sinners who have led the Roman Catholic Church over the past 2000 years. The author draws from his popular audio CD lecture series on the topic, 2,000 Years of Papal History, available through Now You Know Media (www.nowyouknowmedia.com).
