The West Plains Residence Center was established in 1963 as a two-year preparatory program for students aiming to attend what was then known as Southwest Missouri State College (now Missouri State University) in Springfield, Missouri. The center's primary purpose was to provide a bridge for students who wanted to pursue a college education but might not have met the immediate requirements for admission to main campus. The migration of students from the Ozarks Hill country to having an opportunity to get an education was an enormous accomplishment.
