Book excerpt: Kate Clanchy has been teaching people to write poetry for more than twenty years. Some were old, some were young; some were fluent English speakers, some were not. None of them were confident to start with, but a surprising number went to win prizes and every one finished up with a poem they were proud of, a poem that only they could have written - their own poem. Kate's big secret is a simple one: is to share other poems. She believes poetry is like singing or dancing and the best way to learn is to follow someone else. In this book, Kate shares the poems she has found provoke the richest responses, the exercises that help to shape those responses into new poems, and the advice that most often helps new writers build their own writing practice. If you have never written a poem before, this book will get you started. If you have written poems before, this book will help you to write more fluently and confidently, more as yourself. This book not like other creative writing books. It doesn't ask you to set out on your own, but to join in. Your invitation is inside.

Readers will learn to direct light inside each bud so it can reflect off the crystals to reveal beautiful colors and will discover the rewards of alternating the depth of field by a few microns to find the deep-orange pistils and the saturated brilliance that manifests from the contrast when a shot is done just right. Cannabis connoisseurs will delight in intimate views of what they’re smoking, as Spurs’ signature style of macro-photography reveals the makeup of each plant’s personality and characteristics of the individual strains in all their glory.

Book excerpt: I'm pleased that the leaders of our country have changed their stance on the cannabis plant. Too many people for too many years have been victims of a broken system. Progress in the cannabis industry has been slow but steady. Today, giant steps are being made to correct misunderstandings on both sides of the political table. Health care laws, in many states, are removing the handcuffs and shackles from the cannabis industry and allowing the plant to be used for personal and medical benefits. It doesn't matter if you are for it or against it, cannabis is not going away. The poems in this book represent a cultural shift in the way we conceive cannabis. Monsters and mad men are finding balance between acceptance and inclusion. The former have been exposed for the fools they are, and the later still have more work to do. Today the cannabis plant is safe, healthy, and legal in many states. Civil progress is being made to deregulate a controlled substance that didn't need to be overtly controlled in the first place. Many new jobs and products are being introduced to the market place and people are more educated about the cannabis industry than ever before. Fewer numbers of people are being arrested and more taxes are being paid. I thank my lucky stars every night that I'm still alive during this time of great social change. I get to witness a cultural recovery that's long overdue. It will take time and it will get better but it will take everything we have to make a difference in our nation. I think it's time to turn the political spotlight from marijuana and let it shine on the hemp industry and let the products being made from the cannabis plant heal our country and the world community. My music is in the pages of this book. It's in the ink and on the paper, and in the margins from both sides. I ponder the rhythm and long for the rhyme of it all. I believe together we can dance into the future and if the poem is wrong we can always keep dancing until we get it right. Everyone has a secret garden with a bench. The secret is, to be still long enough to find it. Chuck Allen, Jr.

Book excerpt: Perfect book to gift someone you love ** Media House Do you love reading about love and relationships? Is there a poet or a writer hidden in you? Can love and weed go hand in hand or they will be standing opposite to each other? Is it possible for lust to take over from Love or love will always have an upper hand over lust and weed? This book is a masterpiece in itself where it shows you different forms of love and also compares it with weed which is usually a form of the drug. This book is not to promote weed or any form of the drug, it depicts just a simple personification of the author's imagination to understand the expressions of love and weed. The author made a very nice attempt in bringing love close to weed in the form of poetry. Does love wins or weed is beating love, leaving love long behind standing close to lust? It seems like a mystery, to solve, read the book. Download Now! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selected poems of Maureen N. McLane More Anon gathers a selection of poems from Maureen N. McLane’s critically acclaimed first five books of poetry. McLane, whose 2014 collection This Blue was a finalist for the National Book Award, is a poet of wit and play, of romanticism and intellect, of song and polemic. More Anon presents her work anew. The poems spark with life, and the concentrated selection showcases her energy and style. As Parul Seghal wrote in Bookforum, “To read McLane is to be reminded that the brain may be an organ, but the mind is a muscle. Hers is a roving, amphibious intelligence; she’s at home in the essay and the fragment, the polemic and the elegy.” In More Anon, McLane—a poet, scholar, and prizewinning critic—displays the full range of her vertiginous mind and daring experimentation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Barth's most distinguished masterpiece. This modern classic is a hilarious tribute to all the most insidious human vices, with a hero who is "one of the most diverting...to roam the world since Candide." "A feast. Dense, funny, endlessly inventive (and, OK, yes, long-winded) this satire of the 18th-century picaresque novel-think Fielding's Tom Jones or Sterne's Tristram Shandy -is also an earnest picture of the pitfalls awaiting innocence as it makes its unsteady way in the world. It's the late 17th century and Ebenezer Cooke is a poet, dutiful son and determined virgin who travels from England to Maryland to take possession of his father's tobacco (or "sot weed") plantation. He is also eventually given to believe that he has been commissioned by the third Lord Baltimore to write an epic poem, The Marylandiad. But things are not always what they seem. Actually, things are almost never what they seem. Not since Candide has a steadfast soul witnessed so many strange scenes or faced so many perils. Pirates, Indians, shrewd prostitutes, armed insurrectionists - Cooke endures them all, plus assaults on his virginity from both women and men. Barth's language is impossibly rich, a wickedly funny take on old English rhetoric and American self-appraisals. For good measure he throws in stories within stories, including the funniest retelling of the Pocahontas tale -revealed to us in the "secret" journals of Capt. John Smith - that anyone has ever dared to tell." —Time Magazine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victoria Chang's collection takes its title from what many call "the worst weed in the world," a plant so rapidly and uncontrollably invasive that it is illegal to sell or possess in the United States. Chang explores this image of vitality and evil in three thematically grouped sections focusing on corporate greed, infidelity and desire, and historical atrocities, including the excesses of the Cultural Revolution in China and the massacre of Chinese people in Nanking by Japanese troops in World War II. This edgy, fierce subject matter becomes engaging and fresh as Chang applies her powers of imagination to the extraordinary lives of Madame Mao, investment banker Frank P. Quattrone, and others living at extraordinary historical moments. In "Seven Stages of Genocide," for example, the poem's speaker is herded into a death camp along with a neighbor that he strongly dislikes: "The barbed wire around us forces me / to catch his breath that smells like goose." Chang focuses her attention to occurrences in the world that many poets find too violent or disturbing to write about, thereby making her own distinctive aesthetic from that which is, like Salvinia molesta, both creepy and beautiful.
