Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hymn which forms the subject of this little volume has no traditional title. Like The Hymn of the Robe of Glory, which formed the last of these Echoes, it is found in the Syriac Acts of Judas Thomas, where it is put in the mouth of the Apostle who is said, on his travels, to have been guest of honour at a bridal feast. In addition to the Syriac we have a Greek text which is plainly a translation. The Greek is in prose, but the Syriac for the most part in verses of twelve syllables, in couplets, "just like The Hymn of the Robe 'of Glory. As Macke tells us (p. 17), where the Greek and Syriac agree the verses are of six syllables; or more correctly, as Burkitt has pointed out (p. 277), normally 6 + 6, but sometimes 5+7- Moreover, the Greek can be translated back into metred Syriac where the present Syriac departs from the metre. An Armenian version also existed, of which, unfortunately, we now possess only the opening and closing lines. All scholars agree that the original Hymn was composed in Syriac; but is our Syriac text as it stands the original? It plainly is not; it has been " overworked," as the Germans call it, by an editor, and that too, to serve certain theological interests, while the scraps of the Armenian version show that it in its turn had been still further over-worked.

These books contain translations and interpretations of the Gnostic writings of the ancients. Long before the discovery of the Nag Hammadi Library, Mead translated these esoteric texts of various origins (Christian, Roman, Greek). He wanted to make this material accessible to the growing number of people at the time eager to encounter this ancient mystical religion based on an intuitive process of knowing oneself and the hidden aspects of life and existence. Upon the publication of the 100-year anniversary edition of the series, the appeal for this same material remains stronger than ever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pearlers we meet in this book were early monks of Syria, Mesopotamia (Iraq), and Persia (Iran). They saw themselves as pearl-divers and pearl-merchants searing--through asceticism and prayer--for the precious pearl of mystical experience. Their quest led them into the wilderness, to a state of silent solitude in remote caves and hermitages. Working from Syriac manuscripts in the British Museum, the Vatican Library, the Greek monastery of Saint Catherine in the wilderness of Sinai, and the Coptic monastery of the Syrians (Der es-Suriani) in the Egyptian desert, Brian E. Colless has produced a volume which draws modern readers into the spiritual world of Christian spirituality little know in the West or in the Chalcedonian East.

Book excerpt: When modern European missionaries arrived in India in the eighteenth century, they were astonished to discover Christian communities that traced their origins back to Thomas. How and when did Christianity spread eastwards? The earliest answer can be found in the pages of The Acts of Thomas. The Acts of Thomas is one of five surviving apocryphal acts along with Andrew, John, Peter, and Paul that recount the adventures of the apostles as they carried the Christian message to the far reaches of their world. The well-known Hymn of the Pearl, widely regarded as an allegory of the soul on its journey, from God and back to God, is found in its pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Apocryphal Acts of Thomas is the first modern collection of studies on the most important aspects of the Acts of Thomas, an early Christian kind of novel, which was originally written either in Greek or Syriac. The volume starts with the memoirs of the Altmeister Fre Klijn regarding his own role in the study of the Acts. He is followed by an analysis of the elusive phenomenon of Thomas Christianity. The major part of the book studies various aspects and passages of the Acts: narrative strategies, the heavenly palace, factors of plot, the famous Hymn of the Pearl, the serpent, women, and the much-debated connection of Thomas with India. As a kind of summary of the results of some of our previous investigations, the penultimate chapter takes a fresh look at the authors, place, time and readership of the major Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles. As has become customary, the volume is rounded off by a bibliography and a detailed index.
