Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Way of the Buddha The object of this little book is to give the reader a succinct account of an Eastern sage whose doctrine of the Path has been accepted by millions of the human race, and whose influ ence is still felt at the ends of the earth. What is generally understood by Buddhism will be found to differ greatly from the way of emancipation here set forth. And for this reason Unlike all other religions, Buddhism began with out God and without prayer, and ended in be coming a most elaborate system of polytheism with a superstitious multiplication of collects. Up to the time of Asoka, about 250 b.o., it seems to have remained comparatively pure; but by the thirteenth century a.d., when the revival of Brahmanism drove it from India, it had assumed in other countries so many new features as to be hardly recognisable. Nor should this be a matter for great surprise. When an essentially Aryan religion or system of philosophy is transplanted to Turanian lands it is not to be expected that it will remain unchanged. The contrast between the teaching of the Christ and of His apostles, and the Christianity of Rome in the Middle Ages is indeed great, but the difference between the Buddhism of Tibet and the Dharma of Sakya Muni 1s greater still. The history of the faith In all the lands m which it has taken root is far too vast a subject for our present purpose, but a general outline of its rise and fall in Aryavarta. Lam rim chen mo) is one of the brightest jewels in the world’s treasury of sacred literature. The author, Tsong-kha-pa, completed it in 1402, and it soon became one of the most renowned works of spiritual practice and philosophy in the world of Tibetan Buddhism. Because it condenses all the exoteric sūtra scriptures into a meditation manual that is easy to understand, scholars and practitioners rely on its authoritative presentation as a gateway that leads to a full understanding of the Buddha’s teachings. Tsong-kha-pa took great pains to base his insights on classical Indian Buddhist literature, illustrating his points with classical citations as well as with sayings of the masters of the earlier Kadampa tradition. In this way the text demonstrates clearly how Tibetan Buddhism carefully preserved and developed the Indian Buddhist traditions. This second of three volumes covers the deeds of the bodhisattvas, as well as how to train in the six perfections.

Book excerpt: The basic teachings of Buddhism as they relate to everyday life—presented by the esteemed Tibetan meditation master In The Heart of the Buddha, Chögyam Trungpa examines the basic teachings of Buddhism and places them within the context of daily life. Divided into three parts, the book begins with a discussion about the open, inquisitive, and good-humored qualities of the “heart of the Buddha”—an “enlightened gene” that everyone possesses. Next, Chögyam Trungpa moves to the stages of the Buddhist path, presenting the three vehicles—Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana—that carry the Buddhist practitioner toward enlightenment. Finally, he describes the direct application of Buddhist teachings to topics as varied as relationships, drinking, children, and money. The Heart of the Buddha reflects Trungpa’s great appreciation for Western culture and deep understanding of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, which enabled him to teach Westerners in an effective, contemporary way.

Book excerpt: With poems from spiritual teachers to jazz musicians, from the monastery to the street, What Book!? brings together a boad range of verse, expressions of living in an awakened way. " A poet once located poetry as somewhere before or after words take place. Mindfulness is the practice of finding that realm, dwelling there, and cultivating the ability to live completely in the present, deeply aware and appreciative of life." - from the author's Preface. "This enigmatically titled anthology offers numerous delights and valuable evidence that great poetic variety, from haiku and witty two liners to page-long discourses, has by now given distinct expression to Western Buddhism." - Publisher’s Weekly.
