Book excerpt: Dancing in Shadows explores the power of Indigenous performance pitted against the forces of settler colonisation. Historian Anna Haebich documents how the Nyungar people of Western Australia strategically and courageously adapted their rich performance culture to survive the catastrophe that engulfed them, and continue to generously share their culture, history, and language in theatre. In public corroborees, they performed their sovereignty to the colonists, and in community-only gatherings they danced and sang to bring forth resilience and spiritual healing. Pushed away by the colonists and denied their culture and lands, they continued to live and perform in the shadows over the years in combinations of the old and the new, including indigenised settler songs and dances. Nyungar people survived, and they now number around 40,000 people and constitute the largest Aboriginal nation in the Australian settler state. The ancient family lineages live in city suburbs and country towns, and they continue to perform to celebrate their ancestors and to strengthen community well-being by being together. Dancing in Shadows sheds light on the little-known history of Nyungar performance. [Subject: Theatre Studies, Sociology, History, Australian History, Aboriginal Studies]

Book excerpt: A Bridge Between is the first account of the Benedictine women who worked at New Norcia and the first book-length exploration of twentieth-century life in the Western Australian mission town. From the founding of a grand school intended for ‘nativas’, through links to Mexico and Paraguay then Ireland, India and Belgium, as well as to their house in the Kimberley, and a network of villages near Burgos in the north of Spain, this is a complex international history. A Bridge Between gathers a powerful, fragmented story from the margins of the archive, recalling the Aboriginal women who joined the community in the 1950s and the compelling reunion of missionaries and former students in 2001. By tracing the all-but-forgotten story of the community of Benedictine women who were central to the experience of the mission for many Aboriginal families in the twentieth century, this book lays a foundation for further work. This sensitive account of Spanish Benedictine women at an Aboriginal mission in Western Australia is poignant and disturbing. Notable for its ecumenical spirit, depth of research and deep engagement with the subject, A Bridge Between is a model of how religious history, in its broader bearings, can be written. — Graeme Davison, Monash University With great insight and care, A Bridge Between presents a sympathetic but not uncritical history of the lives of individuals who have often been invisible. The story of the nuns at New Norcia is a timely contribution to Australia’s religious history. Given the findings of the Royal Commission, it will be widely read both within and beyond the academy. History is, here, a spiritual discipline, and an exercise in hope and reconciliation. — Laura Rademaker, The Australian National University

Book excerpt: 'As uncomfortable as it is, we need to reckon with our history. On January 26, no Australian can really look away.' Since publishing his critically acclaimed, Walkley Award-winning, bestselling memoir Talking to My Country in early 2016, Stan Grant has been crossing the country, talking to huge crowds everywhere about how racism is at the heart of our history and the Australian dream. But Stan knows this is not where the story ends. In this book, Australia Day, his long-awaited follow up to Talking to My Country, Stan talks about our country, about who we are as a nation, about the indigenous struggle for belonging and identity in Australia, and what it means to be Australian. A sad, wise, beautiful, reflective and troubled book, Australia Day asks the questions that have to be asked, that no else seems to be asking. Who are we? What is our country? How do we move forward from here? Praise for Talking to My Country: 'A story so essential and salutary to this place that it should be given out free at the ballot box' The Australian 'Deeply disturbing, profoundly moving' Hobart Mercury 'Grant will be an important voice in shaping this nation' The Saturday Paper Talking to My Country won the 2016 Walkley Book Award and the Special Award at the 2016 Heritage Awards, and was shortlisted in the 2016 Queensland Literary Awards, the Nib Waverley Library Awards and the 2017 ABIA Awards.

Book excerpt: Sacrosanctum Concilium opened the door to all Christians to understand the contemporary challenge to their life and health, and it started with the reform of the liturgy. In the words of Paul VI the liturgy is the 'first source of life communicated to us, the first school of our spiritual life, the first gift we can give to Christian people by our believing and praying, and the first invitation to the world.' That is surely true for all of us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a work of first class liturgical scholarship, addressing itself to the pressing pastoral need of cultural adaptation. --Rev. Charles W. Gusmer author of And You Visited Me: Sacramental Ministry to the Sick and the Dying The work of Father Anscar Chupungco on the Cultural Adaptation of the Liturgy is an indispensable work at this time when each country, and especially the 'new' nations of the developing world, attempt to experiment with the adaptation (inculturation) of the liturgy in their own cultures. Without scientific understanding of the history and tradition, such attempts are doomed to either caprice or defeat. This book ought to become the manual of any adaptation. --Rev. Adrien Nocent, OSB Professor, Pontifical Liturgical Institute of St. Anselm, Rome In this wide-ranging study, Father Chupungco looks at the way the liturgy was adapted in various cultures in the past. For us, the Constitution on the Liturgy outlines the theological, liturgical, and cultural principles needed when the people of God adapt liturgy to our many cultures in the modern world. --Rev. Patrick Byrne National Liturgical Office, Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops In an historical overview, Chupungco first establishes how cultural adaptation is a part of the Roman Church's liturgical heritage. He goes on to articulate principles of adaptation from theological, liturgical, and cultural perspectives. His presentation is based on a blend of scholarly documentation and astute observation of current liturgical problems. The volume makes a solid contribution to both the theoretical and the practical dimensions of pastoral liturgy. --Rev. Gerald V. Lardner, SS St. John Vianney Church, Kenmore, Washington Anscar J. Chupungco, OSB, is the author of 'Liturgical Inculturation: Sacramentals, Religiosity, and Catechesis' and 'Shaping the Easter Feast'. He is also the editor of 'Handbook for Liturgical Studies'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 18th century is nearing its end. European settlers have not yet arrived on Australia's western shore. Near the banks of what is now the Peel Inlet, an old Man called Mokam prepares his son Windjan to succeed him as Chief of the Bindjarep and ruler of a territory half the size of Ireland. With the help of the Boorna-Waangki, an inscribed message-stick carried through the bush by Aboriginal runners, Windjan will continue to maintain the Cultural Legacy of his People In 1829, with the coming of the Europeans, the threads of Nyoongar Tradition are broken. Windjan dies in Mandurah in 1884, leaving his son ""George"" Yaburkurt to bear the Boorna-Waangki of his People's Heritage. Yaburkurt dies in 1915. But the messagestick of Traditional Culture does not thereby perish from the earth. Just three years later, a child is born in Mandurah--another of Windjan's descendants, destined to take up the baton of Nyoongar Cultural Awareness and to carry it forward for the benefit of generations yet unborn. The Way of the Boorna-Waangki is a true tale of Cultural Endurance. Through the lived experiences of Elders like Edward Mippy, the story takes its readers northwards; from the Peel Inlet to colonial Perth and from the Swan River country to the settlements of the Victoria Plains--unfolding as it goes a fascinating narrative of continuing Aboriginal Identity. Robert David Rooney was born in Sydney in 1934. In 1957 he entered the Benedictine Abbey of New Norcia, taking the Religious name of Bernard. He was elected Superior of New Norcia in 1971. In 1984, having relinquished the role of ruling Abbot, he was appointed Parish Priest of Moora, where he spent four years working with the Nyoongar People of the South-west. He gained a PhD in indigenous Research In 2003. Bernard Rooney's previous publications include a Nyoongar Dictionary, and the Nyoongar Legacy: The Naming of the Land and the Language of its People. This latter publication lists the etymology of over 300 of the towns and place-names of South-Western Australia.

Book excerpt: Depicting the full spectrum of adolescent alienation, this engaging, coming-of-age narrative is a humorous blend of novel and memoir. A sensitive, quick-witted boy from a small town, Jack Muir adores his mother, yearns for affection from his father, and lives in the shadow of his accomplished brother. Sent to a boarding school at a young age, Jack must quickly decide what sort of person he will be—the type that succumbs to the pressure of bullies and the school system or the type that fights back, using clever banter and intellect to get by. With a unique and authentic voice, this darkly humorous tale portrays the road to depression as seen through the naiveté of youth.
