Yet something is silently glowing under its surface that could wreak havoc in the fictitious town of Greenwood, which depends on the lake for its water. Meanwhile, twenty-eight-year-old divorcee, Debra Chandler, is working in a Nashville research lab for the brilliant, but difficult Dr. Joseph Steiner, an authority in DNA research. Soon her quiet and boring world will be turned upside down when a new boyfriend, medical resident Dr. Jim Tarkington, asks her to accompany him to Greenwood to investigate a possible epidemic. Coincidently, this is the same town where her favorite cousin Elizabeth Chandler lives. Elizabeth works as an office nurse for a doctor in family practice. Shortly they and the rest of the medical community will be swept up in a disaster of epic proportions. Jim and Debra arrive at Greenwood Memorial planning a short visit to collect data for his research paper. There they find a chaotic scene with the hospital overflowing with deadly ill patients suffering from an unknown disease. The medical personnel have no idea what is causing the illness as they frantically attempt to treat the sick. After interviewing patients and arranging to collect samples from them, Debra and Jim, exhausted, spend the night at Elizabeth's home. The next day, acting on a hunch, they also obtain samples from the Greenwood Water Company before returning home. Back in Nashville, after careful laboratory analysis of the samples, they discover an unbelievable reason for the epidemic. This information will later force the decision-makers to admit a madman is loose in the city.

Falling asleep in a different bed every night has made it easy for Cain Black to forget his past. It's been ten years since he packed his guitar and left Crystal Lake, Michigan, to chase his dreams. Now tragedy has forced him home again. And though Cain relishes the freedom of the road, one stolen moment with Maggie O'Rourke makes him wonder if he's missing out on something bigger than fame. For Maggie—single mother and newly settled in Crystal Lake—love is a luxury she just can't afford. Sure, she appreciates the tall, dark and handsome looks of prodigal son Cain Black. But how long can she expect the notorious hellion to stay? The last thing either of them wants is something complicated. But sometimes love has its own plans. Book excerpt: Absolute Unit is a dark carnival ride through the underside of the American Dream, where hustlers and parasites fight to survive against gun-toting furries, sarcastic drug kingpins, old ladies who are startlingly good with knives, and angry ex-girlfriends. It's a hardboiled slice of modern American horror that asks the deepest question of all: Is the human race worth saving?Bill is a nobody, a health inspector who's not above taking a few dollars to overlook a restaurant's mouse problem, and hated by nearly everyone except his long-suffering girlfriend. His nephew, Trent, isn't much better: sexually and morally confused, he's probably the worst teenage con artist on the East Coast. But today, these two losers are going to become the most important people in the world. That's because Bill and Trent harbor a sentient parasite with a sarcastic sense of humor and a ravenous appetite. As the parasite figures out how to control its new human hosts, the focus of its desires grows from delicious cheeseburgers and beer to something much darker and more dangerous. The apocalypse might come from within us?

Book excerpt: It's end of October 1985 and the crumbling river town of Dubois, Iowa is shocked by the gruesome murder of one of the pillars of the community. Detective David Carlson has no motive, no evidence, and only one lead: the macabre local legend of "Boris Orlof," a late night horror movie host who burned to death during a stage performance at the drive-in on Halloween night twenty years ago and the teenage loner obsessed with keeping his memory alive. The body count is rising and the darkness that hangs over the town grows by the hour. Time is running out as Carlson desperately chases shadows into a nightmare world of living horrors. On Halloween the drive-in re-opens at midnight for a show no one will ever forget. Proudly brought to you by Crystal Lake Publishing-Tales from The Darkest Depths. Interview with the author: What was the inspiration for this novel? In the late 90's, I produced and starred in a TV show where I hosted public domain horror movies in character as "Boris the Undead Hepcat," kind of a mash-up of Dean Martin and Beetlejuice. The show was definitely amateurish, but also a true labor of love and an ode to all the horror hosts I'd grown up with. Over the years I'd thought about trying to bring the show back, but none of my ideas for it were very satisfying. Then one night I was playing The Cramps during my commute home and kind of letting my mind wander. Listening to Lux Interior tease every possible threat and innuendo out of old rockabilly lyrics put this image in my head - It looked like my old horror host character, but it was something else. Something much darker. A real monster pretending to be a fake one. This book is his story. Tell us a little about your lead characters. David Carlson is police detective haunted by past failures and the everyday tragedies of working class crime. He's a relative new comer to the town of Dubois ("rhymes with noise") Iowa, but he's made it his home and is committed to protecting it. While struggling to find clues, Carlson develops a bond with video store clerk James West. James is 19 and still trapped in the small town he never belonged to. He dreams of escape...and finds it at the movies. Why should readers give your work a try? Midnight Horror Show comes from untold hours haunting video stores. From long, lonesome drives through endless cornfields. It comes from desperately searching the airwaves and staying up way too late to get a glimpse of something magical, and terrifying, and true. This book is my love letter to the monsters, who were there for me when no one else was.

The Death and Life of the Great Lakes is prize-winning reporter Dan Egan’s compulsively readable portrait of an ecological catastrophe happening right before our eyes, blending the epic story of the lakes with an examination of the perils they face and the ways we can restore and preserve them for generations to come.

Book excerpt: When the people of Flint, Michigan, turned on their faucets in April 2014, the water pouring out was poisoned with lead and other toxins. Through a series of disastrous decisions, the state government had switched the city’s water supply to a source that corroded Flint’s aging lead pipes. Complaints about the foul-smelling water were dismissed: the residents of Flint, mostly poor and African American, were not seen as credible, even in matters of their own lives. It took eighteen months of activism by city residents and a band of dogged outsiders to force the state to admit that the water was poisonous. By that time, twelve people had died and Flint’s children had suffered irreparable harm. The long battle for accountability and a humane response to this man-made disaster has only just begun. In the first full account of this American tragedy, Anna Clark's The Poisoned City recounts the gripping story of Flint’s poisoned water through the people who caused it, suffered from it, and exposed it. It is a chronicle of one town, but could also be about any American city, all made precarious by the neglect of infrastructure and the erosion of democratic decision making. Places like Flint are set up to fail—and for the people who live and work in them, the consequences can be fatal.
