Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Water-Fowl Family The males Of a number Of varieties of ducks, however, when full-plumaged in the late fall and winter, are unsurpassed in beauty of coloring; an attire that is retained until incubation has begun. About this time, the birds moult, the male assuming a dress more or less closely resembling the female. During the moulting period for a while many of our water-fowl are helpless, the large pinions of the wing having been lost. Now every protection against the depredations of the natives and other enemies is essential, and hence nature's provision in the change of color. The males of many of our water-fowl, after incubation has been estab lished, separate from the females, and gather by themselves on neighboring bodies Of water, where greater security is afforded than the shores and marshes selected for nesting purposes could give. The female attends to all of the duties of nesting and hatching, bringing up the brood, and leading them south when an all-provident nature directs the weary flight. In the different species Of geese and swan both birds divide the duties of nesting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Second Book of Birds: Bird Families In offering this Second Book, to supplement the First Book of Birds, I should like to say that I have in each family spoken of species to be found in the South and West as well as in the Eastern States. As the biographies of Western birds have not been fully written, my information has sometimes been meagre, but I have done the best I could. For authority on Western birds, I have depended upon Major Bendire (Life Histories of North American Birds), Professor Keeler (Bird Notes Afield), and Miss Florence A. Merriam (A-Birding on a Bronco). In introducing each family I have selected the most common, or the typical species of that family. In cases where it was possible, I have chosen species represented in the different sections of the country, not only because the family traits are better shown, but because it is more encouraging to a beginner to become acquainted with birds he can see almost anywhere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Domestic Water Fowl: Ducks, Geese and Swans; How to Rear and Manage Them The Cayuga is as much an American breed as the Aylesbury is English or the Rouen is French, and it ought to receive much more attention from our fancy breeders. It has not been very extensively propagated until within a few years, and is now a rare bird in the. Farm-yards of our country. It is as easily raised as the common Mallard, and with careful breeding for afew generations may be brought up to the weight of the Rouen. It is said to have originated on the shores of Cayuga lake, and to be a cross of the wild black duck upon the common Mallard. However that may be, it has been long enough propagated to have very distinct qualities, and is properly called a breed. 'the head is small, neat and slender; the bill broad, rather short and dark in color; neck medium; breast broad, full and prominent; body long and round, very full and plump; wings long and carried well up; legs medium in length, and black or a dark slate color; plumage of drake of a glossy black throughout; the head and neck of a brilliant greenish hue; also, the wing coverts, but not so decided in color, the primaries of the duck some times being of a dark brown, all the rest is a' jet black; a few flashes of white in the breast of the duck oh jectionable, but not a disqualification.'
