Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Spanish-American War of 1898 Much has been published on the brief but in teresting and very important war of 1898 between the United States and Spain; but practically every thing that has appeared belongs to one of two classes. On the one hand, there are the narratives of sailors, soldiers, and correspondents who took part in it, and who describe what they saw. These books are not history, though many of them are excellent ma terial for history. On the other hand, there are records of a more general character, most of which are hasty compilations of little value. The con temporary accounts oi the war were very inaccurate and imperfect; it was not until some time later that there was a sufficient body of trustworthy evidence to make it possible to write anything like a real history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete History of the Spanish-American War of 1898 But the United States, which struck the blow for liberty ih 1776, and for unity in 1861, next smote in the sacred name of humanity. The cries Of'the dead and dying on her doorsteps fell no longer on deaf ears. Disavowing all intention of adding the island of Cuba to our domain, we made war upon the wickedest nation that claims to be civilized, and we waged it in behalf of a weak but gallant people who needed our help. Not since the world began has a more righteous war been prosecuted bravely to a triumphant conclusion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the War With Spain The period in Spanish history that we realise most easily and most vividly illustrates the period that we may never have realised at all - the dim, the remote part of it, the dawn of it, the beginning of the whole story. We know very well what Spaniards of the sixteenth century thought of the Western Hemisphere: their land of mystery, enchantment, adventure, and, above all, their source of the precious metals. Well, three thousand years earlier, the nations inhabiting the eastern shores of the Mediterranean entertained similar views in regard to Spain. It was the land of brightest colours and the most ardent land: the sun went down into it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches From the Spanish-American War The following considerations constitute the Opinions of the author as acquired by him on the scene of war. He wishes to call special attention to the fact that until authentic data are available as to the strength of the two Opponents in the different battles, the tactical situations and intentions, and the losses in personnel and material, the reports can be but incomplete. Nevertheless it will be desirable, even without awaiting official statements, which may not be published for years by the two belligerent parties, to sift the confused mass of material which has come to us through the newspapers and to try and describe the most important operations, at least approximately, as they have taken place. To that end I have partly made use of reports of Germans who were eye witnesses of the events. It is hardly necessary to emphasize the fact that the author has observed the strictest impartiality in his estimates of the situation. He has the same high regard for Spanish and Americans. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Spanish-American War: Embracing a Complete Review of Our Relations With Spain But what could we do? The situation was inexorable. It was either ruthlessly to beat down, or be ignominiously humiliated. When nations can do nothing they can fight, and fight we did. And so did the Spaniard. But centuries of moral poison, percolating through the veins of the body politic of Spain, had done their work. The obso lete Spaniard was no match for the alert and enterprising American. The war was quickly over. It might not have been so quickly over in the case of Germany and France; but its end would have been the same. Spain has no reason to be ashamed of her part in it. Through out the United States, at least, the Spanish character stands higher to-day than it did before the war, though the Spaniards have Admirals Montejo and Cervera and General Toral to thank for the maintenance of the national credit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Our War With Spain More than this, the business interests of the United States in Cuba were constantly increas Ing; American citizens, resident there because of business duties, were continually in danger or jeopardy; and, more important still, the miserable and insufferable sanitary conditions of what should be a healthful and beautiful island made the land a breeding-spot of yellow fever and other menacing diseases to which almost every epidemic that had visited the United States could be directly traced. Download or read book Young People's History of the War with Spain (Classic Reprint) written by Prescott Holmes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young People's History of the War With Spain The brief war between the United States and Spain was the outgrowth of the humanity of the American people and their love of fair play. They did not stand idly by when Spain was literally starving the people of Cuba into subjection to her will, but freely and generously sent food, medicine and clothing to the sufferers. When Spain's cruelty to the Cubans became intolerable to the civilized world, the United States intervened in the name of humanity and right, and demanded that the oppression should cease. Spain resented this, and the war followed. Much has been said and written regarding our conduct of the war, and the grave scandals that arose from it: but it is not the purpose of this volume to discuss these other than to say that, the work of the navy was clean and beyond question, while it is clear to every one that there was gross mismanagement on the part of army officials. Book Synopsis The War of Spain by : Charles Morris
Download or read book The War of Spain written by Charles Morris and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War of Spain: A Complete History of the War of 1898 Between the United States and Spain The true mission of the United States may be held to be peace, not war; production, not destruction; industry, not rapine. But even to the most peacefully inclined of nations occasions come which irresistibly demand that the sword shall be drawn and blows be struck, and through one of these periods of violence this country has just passed. It has had to deal with a nation not yet in the nineteenth century, a belated relic of the mediaeval age, and has found it necessary to employ forcible methods. War is an evil, but there are greater evils only to be met by war, national diseases which only the strongest remedies can cure. 'Spain's colonial system has been such a disease, one with which only heroic treatment would avail. It has been a system of despotism and enslavement, of the suppression of insurrection by massacre and starvation, and of obstinate adherence to methods long since outlived by other civilized nations. The state of affairs had grown intolerable when the United States took up the sword for the relief of a starving and perishing people, and began a war based upon the highest of motives, that of humane sympathy and the succor of the oppressed. This country has been accused of a selfish greed for the territory of Spain; but it may be safely said that no purpose of territorial aggrandizement was among the motives that inspired the war.
