Book excerpt: Leadership isn't about being perfect; it's about getting things done. In The Wandering Leader, author David Small, an ice hockey coach who has traveled the world, presents his views about being a leader and a man by growing the most important part of your leadership persona-yourself. The Wandering Leader seeks to help you determine how to dream, give you a road map to accomplish your dreams, and supply the courage to keep taking steps forward once that road map has been blown out the window. To guide you in unleashing the great promise inside of you and make you an amazing leader, it discusses seven different areas of your life: career, finances, social, physical, spiritual, intellectual, and family. But most importantly, it focuses on you and what you have to offer. The Wandering Leader is not a typical book on leadership. Using personal examples from a wide range of people-such as military officers, construction workers, and economics specialists-it shows that you can be a leader in many areas of your life-in friendships, business, and family. It's not about your job or role; it's about your character and heart, helping you to pick yourself up after you've been kicked in the teeth. "Deeply motivated by your astute truth, I have conquered some of my most difficult obstacles and have you to thank." -Mitch Labreche, helicopter pilot, former BCHL Player

Book excerpt: Wanna know what the problem is? Its God. Deep down inside, in that quiet place in our heart and soul, the problem is we dont know if he is real. I was betrayed by the church, hurt by the leaders and the ones I looked up too, and embarassed about how Christians behave. So I walked away. For more than a decade I left it all behind, I didnt need God. I equated all the hurt and bitterness the church had caused me with God. But thats not God. After a decade focused on my career, my wealth, my happiness, my desires, I found myself on a wild adventure with God. Through the army, coaching professional hockey in Europe, helping victims of war in Burma, and a long walk in Spain, I slowly began to see the true nature and character of God. He wasnt into rules and religion, he didnt want me to memorize the Bible and follow all the traditions, he just wanted my heart. Through my struggle with depression I learned that God is real, not because of some warm fuzzy feeling I had one time, but I actually mathematically concluded that God is real. Want to meet the real Jesus? Want to know if God is really real? Come on an adventure with me.

The Way of the Shepherd points you beyond dated trends and out-of-touch management techniques to the strategies that will make you a truly outstanding leader. When William Pentak had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interview Ted McBride, one of the most respected CEOs in America, he was shocked by what McBride was willing to share. Throughout The Way of the Shepherd, you'll learn how to infuse your work with meaning, no matter your role, title, industry, or the size of your team. Uncover the tried-and-true best practices for how to engage, energize, and ignite your workforce by: Getting to know your team, one person at a time Relentlessly communicating your values and your mission Defining the cause for your people and showing them where they fit in Having a heart for the people that you're leading Understanding that great leadership isn't just professional, it's personal If you're ready to transform your team, create a culture of belonging, and truly learn to lead by example, it's time to discover The Way of the Shepherd.

Book excerpt: "Examining the act of wandering through many lenses, Wandering in Ancient Greek Culture addresses questions such as: Why did the Greeks associate the figure of the wanderer with the condition of exile? How was the expansion of the world under Rome reflected in the connotations of wandering? Does a person learn by wandering, or is wandering a deviation from the truth? In the end, this matchless volume shows how the transformations that affected the figure of the wanderer coincided with new perceptions of the world and of travel, and invites us to consider its definition and import today."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corballis argues that mind-wandering has many constructive and adaptive features. These range from mental time travel?the wandering back and forth through time, not only to plan our futures based on past experience, but also to generate a continuous sense of who we are--to the ability to inhabit the minds of others, increasing empathy and social understanding. Through mind-wandering, we invent, tell stories, and expand our mental horizons. Mind wandering , hardly the sign of a faulty network or aimless distraction, actually underwrites creativity, whether as a Wordsworth wandering lonely as a cloud, or an Einstein imagining himself travelling on a beam of light. Corballis takes readers on a mental journey in chapters that can be savored piecemeal, as the minds of readers wander in different ways, and sometimes have limited attentional capacity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In tracing the intellectual roots of business leadership over the last one hundred years, award winning author Gilbert W. Fairholm argues that until recently, spirit and soul have been absent from the major models. After outlining the elements of the five major ideas about leadership, he goes on to define and make operational a new focus that must exist in order to truly understand the leaders' role in relation to workers. The study begins with scientific management and traces the evolution of leadership ideas through the quality movement, on to values-, culture-, and trust-based leadership models, and concluding with an emphasis on spirit in the workplace. It suggests that the leader in the twenty-first century will need to embrace a leadership style based on the main premise of each model along with a focus on ethics, community, service, and spirituality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking as his starting-point Jesus' saying in Matt 8:22, "Let the dead bury the dead," Professor Hengel subjects Jesus' discipleship sayings to a rigorous historical scrutiny. The sharp break with contemporary Jewish mores in Matt 8:22 leads Hengel to a consideration of other contemporary forms of discipleship -- Cynic, Rabbinic, and Zealot. Rejecting the view that Jesus was some kind of rabbi, Hengel argues that there are, despite the obvious fundamental differences, closer similarities between Jesus and the charismatic-prophetic leaders of the Maccabean-Zealot tradition. Both his call to leave all and go after him and his freedom and authority over against the Law place him closer to the Zealots than to the scribes and their disciples whose relationship was foremost that of teacher and pupil. Thus Professor Hengel's magisterial command of Jewish and Hellenistic first-century material is here brought to bear on the figure of Jesus and we are given a remarkable series of historical insights into the character of Jesus' ministry and his work with his disciples. What emerges is a picture of Jesus fully as a man of his time but one whose authority is unique and whose call to share his fate in the service of the imminent Kingdom is without equivalent among his contemporaries. It is Professor Hengel's belief that the way to a proper understanding of Jesus' teaching can be only through the detailed critical study of the whole body of the synoptic sayings and pericopae. What he offers here takes its starting point in only one such pericope; yet the flood of light that this study sheds on Jesus' teaching and life is such that this book stands as one of the most important contributions to the continuing enquiry into the historical Jesus.
