We investigate this by creating a database of past wage-price spirals among a wide set of advanced economies going back to the 1960s. We define a wage-price spiral as an episode where at least three out of four consecutive quarters saw accelerating consumer prices and rising nominal wages. Perhaps surprisingly, only a small minority of such episodes were followed by sustained acceleration in wages and prices. Instead, inflation and nominal wage growth tended to stabilize, leaving real wage growth broadly unchanged. A decomposition of wage dynamics using a wage Phillips curve suggests that nominal wage growth normally stabilizes at levels that are consistent with observed inflation and labor market tightness. When focusing on episodes that mimic the recent pattern of falling real wages and tightening labor markets, declining inflation and nominal wage growth increases tended to follow – thus allowing real wages to catch up. We conclude that an acceleration of nominal wages should not necessarily be seen as a sign that a wage-price spiral is taking hold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the depth of the Greek crisis, the exorbitant burdens placed upon the working people and the massive popular resistance movement to capitalist policies, there is a definite lack of consistently Marxist analyses of the Greek problem. International debates regarding the Greek crisis have been dominated by orthodox (Neoclassical and neo-Keynesian) approaches. The heterodox side of these debates has been occupied by Radical Political Economy approaches (usually radical post-Keynesian or Marxo-Keynesian perspectives). Moreover, they are dominated by the ‘financialisation’ thesis which is quite alien to Marxism, neglects the sphere of production and professes that the global crisis is simply a financial crisis that has nothing to do with ‘real’ accumulation and the profit rate. This book argues that by emphasising the sphere of production and profitability, classical Marxist analysis better explains the Greek crisis than its orthodox and heterodox competitors. The contributors present critiques of the prevalent approaches and offer studies of the Greek crisis that use the methodology and the analytical and empirical tools of classical Marxist Political Economy. In particular, it is shown that the Greek crisis was caused by falling profitability and the ensuing overaccumulation crisis. The ‘broad unequal exchange’ existing between the euro-center and the euro-periphery contributed to Greek capital’s falling profitability. This book enriches the debate about the Greek economic crisis by demonstrating the insights that can be drawn by considering the Marxist alternative to the dominant mainstream and heterodox approaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: Contemporary Greek society is characterized by an all-embracing trend for reform. This task, however, is constrained by problems of Greek polity rooted in the historical and political culture. This text explores the important facets of divergence between Greece and the EU, examining the process through which they affect the relative performance of the country in the economic, social, political and international relations fronts, together with significant attempts to modernize and rationalize internal and external policies and structures. The book is in five parts. In the first, introductory, section, Greece's Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs, the late Yannos Kranidiotis, analyzes the fundamental objectives of Greek foreign policy, whilst the editors explore the challenges of EU membership for Greek domestic and foreign politics, and Greece's participation in the process of European integration. The second part deals with Greece and the EMU, the third analyzes the issues related to state modernization and adjustment. A fourth section examines the welfare state and related policies, and the final part analyzes Greece's foreign policy and external relations, with particular emphasis on the Balkans and Greek-Turkish relations.

Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper explores the determinants of Greece’s potential output, an exercise that could shed light on its current cyclical position, as well as on its medium-term growth prospects. To that end, a production function is estimated, with capital and labor as factors of production and time-varying total factor productivity. The estimation results suggest that the output gap has been closing in recent years, with output projected to be slightly above potential in 1998. The paper also explores the impact of changes in the drachma’s exchange rate on inflation.

Book excerpt: Greece has weathered the pandemic well, with a considerably stronger-than-expected recovery. Reforms progressed in several areas, including digitalization, privatization, improving the fiscal policy mix, and bank balance sheet repair. Greece finalized its early repayment to the IMF on April 4 and is expected to graduate from the quarterly European Institutions’ Enhanced Surveillance framework on schedule by August 2022. Despite the adverse impact of the war in Ukraine, growth is projected to remain robust at 3.5 percent this year. High energy prices are expected to push up average inflation to 6.1 percent. Public debt is on a downward trajectory and rollover risks appear manageable. The external position last year was moderately weaker than that consistent with fundamentals and desirable policies.

With Russia being a key supplier of energy products, the start of the war in Ukraine has led to strong inflationary pressures in the euro area (EA), given the region’s significant exposure to the Russian gas. The price shock has been particularly strong in the Netherlands, largely due to the larger share of gas on the energy mix compared to other peers, making the country vulnerable to changing market conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Careful analysis of an individual nation's economy is difficult even for insiders who know aspects of their own economy well. Good analysis is that much more difficult for outside economists who lack detailed knowledge of the economy. Yet outsiders can bring a fresh perspective that raises interesting questions and sometimes contributes new insights. When insiders and outsiders cooperate together, the resulting analysis may be a significant improvement over what each group could achieve by themselves. This book results from a collaboration among Greek and non-Greek economists, sponsored by the Bank of Greece and the Brookings Institution. By combining the expertise of Greek and non-Greek economists, the project has sought to achieve two broad goals. The first is to facilitate understanding of Greek observers about their economy and to stimulate a constructive policy debate within Greece. The second complementary goal is to provide an analysis of the Greek economy useful to observers of other nations whose economic situations and problems have similarities with those of Greece.
