Book excerpt: In 1845, Sir John Franklin set off from England to locate and chart the elusive Northwest Passage. He and his crew of 129 men never returned. Over the following decade, forty expeditions were launched in an effort to establish the fate of the missing men. But it wasn’t until 1854 that traces of their demise were discovered along the western shore of King William Island. However, without proof, Franklin’s wife, Lady Jane, refused to believe that her husband was dead. And so, in 1857, she sponsored a final expedition. Captain Francis Leopold McClintock, a highly regarded Arctic explorer, was given command of the steam yacht Fox, and he and a crew of twenty-five set off in search of evidence. On this quest, the always-adventurous McClintock was the first European to navigate through Bellot Strait and while the Fox was frozen into the ice in winter, he and his men made long and arduous exploratory journeys by dog sled. Eventually the men reached King William Island, where they discovered a cairn at Victory Point. It contained a note, which confirmed not only that Sir John Franklin had died in 1847, but that his crew had, in fact, been the first to discover the Northwest Passage. When this news reached England, Queen Victoria bestowed the Arctic Medal on McClintock and all the officers and men of the Fox. The Voyage of the "Fox" in the Arctic Seas is Sir Francis McClintock's own thrilling account of the Fox’s journey into the Arctic, and the discovery of the fate of Sir John Franklin and his companions.

Book excerpt: The Karluk set out in 1913 in search of an undiscovered continent, with the largest scientific staff ever sent into the Arctic. Soon after, winter had begun, they were blown off course by polar storms, the ship became imprisoned in ice, and the expedition was abandoned by its leader. Hundreds of miles from civilization, the castaways had no choice but to find solid ground as they struggled against starvation, snow blindness, disease, exposure--and each other. After almost twelve months battling the elements, twelve survivors were rescued, thanks to the heroic efforts of their captain, Bartlett, the Ice Master, who traveled by foot across the ice and through Siberia to find help. Drawing on the diaries of those who were rescued and those who perished, Jennifer Niven re-creates with astonishing accuracy the ill-fated journey and the crews desperate attempts to find a way home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth exploration of the legacy of Joseph Stalin on the former Soviet Union, by the author of King Leopold’s Ghost. Although some twenty million people died during Stalin’s reign of terror, only with the advent of glasnost did Russians begin to confront their memories of that time. In 1991, Adam Hochschild spent nearly six months in Russia talking to gulag survivors, retired concentration camp guards, and countless others. The result is a riveting evocation of a country still haunted by the ghost of Stalin. A New York Times Notable Book “An important contribution to our awareness of the former Soviet Union’s harrowing past and unsettling present.” —Los Angeles Times “A perceptive, intelligent book demonstrating that the significance of the gulag transcends the confines of one country and one generation.” —The New York Times Book Review “This probing and sensitive book…casts striking new light upon the Russian past and present.” —The Washington Post Book World “The voices [Hochschild] has recorded, the relics he has seen, are haunting—and the raw material of a terrific book.” —David Remnick, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Lenin’s Tomb “No other work has brought home the full horror of this monstrous dictator’s rule than this close-up account.” —Daniel Schorr, former senior news analyst, National Public Radio

Book excerpt: 'A vast figure loomed above the ice walls. It was made, no doubt, only of cloud or whirling snow, but it was an immense manlike thing, cast hugely against the sky. Its head stared down at them blindly, but one great arm seemed to beckon, urging the 'Chloe' onwards. And from the depths of the gulf ahead the terrible whistling rose again.'..Dow Amber has set sail at last upon the battleship 'Chloe', but can an outsider and an enemy ever truly belong in the Ship Kings' world?..All too soon, Dow finds himself entangled in rebellion and treachery, and embarked upon a desperate voyage to the frozen north that will decide the future of the very empire. In the icy wastes Dow must take his fate in hand. Is he truly destined to be a mariner? Is the mysterious scapegoat girl Ignella a friend or a foe? And where will they each stand, when the long peace of the Four Isles threatens to shatter forever?..'The Voyage of the Unquiet Ice' is the second adventure in Andrew McGahan's epic Ship Kings series.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A deeply powerful memoir about bipolar illness that has both transformed and saved lives—with a new preface by the author. Dr. Jamison is one of the foremost authorities on manic-depressive (bipolar) illness; she has also experienced it firsthand. For even while she was pursuing her career in academic medicine, Jamison found herself succumbing to the same exhilarating highs and catastrophic depressions that afflicted many of her patients, as her disorder launched her into ruinous spending sprees, episodes of violence, and an attempted suicide. Here Jamison examines bipolar illness from the dual perspectives of the healer and the healed, revealing both its terrors and the cruel allure that at times prompted her to resist taking medication.

Book excerpt: Thius book describes the rise, and fall, of the Souls, an elite groups that flourished in England from the 1880s until the First World War. Its members included Arthur Balfour, George Curzon, Willy Grenfell, George Wyndham, Alfred Lyttelton, Harry Cust and Hug, Lord Elcho. Some of its most influential members were women: Margot Asquith and the Tennant sisters, Ettie Grenfell, Lady Elcho and the Duchess of Rutland. The Souls adorned and scandalized society, cultivating an enjoyment of books, games, leisure and hsopitality in London and on country-house weekends. Above all they enjoyed each other. Unconventional and high spirited, they brough elegance, wit and exuberance of sentiment to all the engaged in, from the creation of thei own special language to their endless flirtations and complicated love affairs. The arrival of World War I say many of them off to fight for England and many died. The frivolity of their earlier lives was over.--From the dust jacket.
