Book excerpt: The effective governance of education and training in the UK is the responsibility of the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and is a major priority of the UK government. Many aspects of initial and continuing training are subject to continuous reform as the UK builds on its strengths and addresses challenges in the emerging systems of lifelong learning. Priorities in the UK are closely in line with the objectives of the Lisbon strategy. Vocational education and training (VET) systems in the UK tend to be complex as well as fast changing. This short review gives an overview of the main structures, trends and challenges. Key elements include the notion of competence to define the content and assessment of VET learning and the increasingly flexible and diverse approach to learning provision.

Book Synopsis The Vocational Quest by : Helen Connell
Download or read book The Vocational Quest written by Helen Connell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-02-07 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Government attempts in recent years to create a national system of vocational education and training have marked a profound shift both in educational policy and in underlying concepts of what education is for. Relations between schools and the working world are changing all the time and the implementation of ideas of vocationalism has forced a blurring of the time-honoured boundaries between educations concerned with concepts and training, or with skills. The challenge now is to define how the schools can give young people the foundations for life in a working world in which they are likely to have to change jobs and where work will fill a smaller proportion of their lives. The Vocational Quest maps the evolution of vocationalism in Britain in historical terms and examines how the particular forms that have come into being in the last few years compare with developments in other parts of the world, including Continental Europe, Japan, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. It argues for new forms of communication and partnership between formal education and training and the wider community, in which values will be shared and no one partner will win at the expense of others.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As has the United States and other countries, the United Kingdom (U.K.) has been concerned about youth unemployment, skill shortages, and national competitiveness in international markets. Further, low skill levels among youth are believed to be slowing the adoption of more effective kinds of work organizations. Since the mid-i 970's, the British government has introduced a number of programs for young people, many of which are designed to help ease the transition from school to work, some of which involve youth in work-based learning. This background paper discusses three types of initiatives, comprising eight major programs introduced in the U.K. over the last 30 years: 1. Implementation of youth training programs (Youth Opportunities Program, New Training Initiative, Youth Training Scheme, Youth Training Program, Youth Credits, Modem Apprenticeships); 2. Efforts to increase the vocational content of what is taught in the classroom (the Technical and Vocational Education Initiative); and 3. Establishment of a national system of vocational qualifications (National Vocational Qualifications) to simplify the.

This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989, this book primarily sets out to provide detailed accounts of the policy towards and the provision of vocational education and training in five countries of the developed world: Japan, Australia, the United States, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the United Kingdom. Professor Cantor concentrates on the training of skilled personnel at operative, craft, and technician levels, and describes provision both within public and private institutions, such as further education colleges, and in industry and business. Comparisons are drawn between each country, for example between the ‘British’ traditions of vocational education and training in Australia and the United Kingdom, and the more ‘entrepreneurial’ approach of Japan and the United States.
