Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vital Issues of the War The first seven sermons in this volume were preached on successive Sundays in April and May and the eighth in September of the present year. Now that the church seems, in the eyes of many, to have fallen from the high esteem in which it was held by a former generation, no doubt a volume of sermons, even on "The Vital Issues of the War," runs grave risk of not being read. Since the war began, however, sharp criticism has been visited upon the pulpit for evading the discussion of its compelling moral and spiritual problems; it needs, therefore, to be made known that all pulpits, to say the least, have not deserved the reproach of failing to utilize this unique opportunity. So my book goes forth, quite without apology, for what it is - the messages of a preacher to his people in the regular course of his ministry, printed as they were delivered, with only the slight revision desirable for publication. Such utterances inevitably reflect a point of view determined in part by the time at which they were spoken. In this they are in nowise exceptional. Magazine articles, or the chapters of a book, must be finished sometime, and must bear internal evidences of their date of composition. Later impressions, especially of the swiftly-moving panorama of a world-war, would modify certain details. Thus, one could not speak now with as much optimism of the Bolshevik rule in Russia as was possible when Sermon IV was preached last April. Still, I have decided to let the sermon stand, as perhaps an over-sympathetic interpretation of the obscure strivings of the Russian democracy, the final outcome of which is still far from apparent. In such a case, one would rather err by undue generosity than by cold-blooded cynicism, which the sermon was intended to rebuke. This timely volume answers 104 questions from a just-war perspective, offering thoughtful yet succinct answers. Ranging from the theoretical to the practical, the volume looks at how the just-war perspective relates to the philosopher, historian, statesman, theologian, combatant, and individual—with particular emphases on its historical development and application to contemporary geopolitical challenges. Forgoing ideological extremes, Charles and Demy give much attention to the biblical teaching on the subject as they provide moral guidance. A valuable resource for considering the ethical issues relating to war, Christians will find this book's user-friendly format a helpful starting point for discussion.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cost of the War to Russia: The Vital Statistics of European Russia During the World War 1914-1917; Social Cost of the War IN the autumn of 1914, when the scientific study of the effects of war upon modern life passed suddenly from theory to history, the Division of Economics and History of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace proposed to adjust the program of its re searches to the new and altered problems which the War presented. The existing program, which had been prepared as the result of a conference of economists held at Berne in 1911, and which dealt with the facts then at hand, had just begun to Show the quality of its contributions; but for many reasons it could no longer be fol lowed out. A plan was therefore drawn up at the request of the Director of the Division, in which it was proposed, by means of an historical survey, to attempt to measure the economic cost of the War and the displacement which it was causing in the processes of civilization. Such an Economic and Social History of the World War, it was felt, if undertaken by men of judicial temper and ade quate training, might ultimately, by reason of its scientific Obliga tions to truth, furnish data for the forming of sound public opinion, and thus contribute fundamentally toward the aims of an institution dedicated to the cause of international peace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vital Forces in Current Events: Readings on Present-Day Affairs From Contemporary Leaders and Thinkers The present volume owes its origin to the increasing recognition of the value of current events in education, as evidenced not only by the inclusion of readings in current events as one possible unit in fulfilling the uniform college-entrance requirements in English but by the widening use of current literature in English courses in school and college. Teachers are realizing as never before the vitalizing influence which a study of distinguished contemporary writing can create. In compiling a book of selections to assist in making such work feasible and effective, the editors have sought for articles with four qualities, all of them desirable in material of this sort. Each selection should present a vital issue, a question of real importance to America and the world. Each discussion should deal with fundamental ideas such as are likely to hold good through the changing current of events. An analysis of the style and structure of each article should disclose the best qualities of present-day writing, clearness and interest. And, lastly, so far as possible the student should be brought into stimulating contact with some leader of thought or action today who can speak with the authority of public recognition. The editors have taken advantage of similarity of aim of the two volumes to use considerable material from their "World War Issues and Ideals," and wish to express their appreciation of the kindness of the contributors to that volume for the opportunity to use again the material so generously granted them there. Though the field covered by the two books is somewhat different, the general purpose has remained the same - to present contemporary problems and ideals, national and international, as they are seen by men of light and leading today. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Victory Corps Series, 1942-3 Each succeeding day drives home the realization that our country faces a long and arduous struggle. April's easy Optimism has paled. The Nazis have not collapsed from within. Nor have they exhausted themselves upon the vast Russian battlefields. Japan entrenches in Asia. Autumn presents the American people with cold stark facts. This war will be a hard war; a war demanding every ounce of energy and sacrifice and devotion we can muster. It will hardly be won before the end of 1943 or 1944. It may continue till 1945 or 1946. It may ultimately require an armed force of men. It is probably only a question of time, there fore, before public demand forces amendment of the Selective Service Act to take young men 18 or 19 years old for military service. We are engaged in a war for survival. This is a total war - a war of armies and navies, a war of factories and farms, a war of homes and schools. Education has an indispensable part to play in total war. Schools must help to teach individuals the issues at stake; to train them for their vital parts in the total war effort; to guide them into conscious personal relationship to the struggle. Students in the Nation's secondary schools are eager to do their part for victory. To utilize more fully this eagerness to serve, to organize it into effective action, to channel it into areas of increasingly critical need, the National Policy Committee recommends the organization of a Victory Corps in every Ameri can high school, large or small, public or private. The Policy Committee urges the organization of the Victory Corps as a high-school youth sector in the all-out effort of our total war, a sector manned by youth who freely volunteer for present service appropriate to their experience and maturity, and who earnestly seek preparation for greater opportunities in the service which lies ahead. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Side Lights on the War: For Upper Grades and High Schools It is dawning upon all school authorities, and especially upon those who make the courses of study, that since this World War stands mountain high above all other events of history it must have a large and growing place in the school program. The problems of today and the magnificent way in which they are being solved constitute the most vital and stimulating material that can be put in the hands of teachers and pupils. The school boys of today are the men of tomorrow who must face the questions of the reconstruction period. Let us spend a little less time with Caesar and Napoleon and a little more with the great leaders of today with their triumphs and problems. The object of this book is to make many of these present questions clear and put them into convenient form for discussion in the class room. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and Progress, the Growth of the World, Influence of the Anglo-Saxon Tween the anglo-saxon and the great and neglected Far Eastern group of peoples. Then come two short chapters devoted to certain so called principles which the praiseworthy, but confused efforts to find moral rules to guide political action have brought into general at tention and which are believed by. The writer to be generally fallacious and apt to divert atten tion from the real and proper war aims. The sixth chapter considers the Russian situation in summary form, and the seventh deals with some of the more prominent delusions which seem to have aflicted the American and Allied publics and hampered the most effective prosecution of the war. The eighth deals with an internal problem of America, without the proper solution of which, the effectiveness in international ao tion of this largest of the anglo-saxon units will be greatly hampered. The ninth chapter attempts a summary of certain obvious effects of the war up to the present, with especial em phasis on matters already discussed at length in previous chapters. The last considers the present war situation and makes proposals for immediate war policy on the basis of the cen tral theme and shows how the proper compre hension of this theme seems to be vital for suc cess. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naval War of 1812: Or the History of the United States Navy During the Last War With Great Britain; To Which Is Appended an Account of the Battle of New Orleans The qualities of which his first work gave promise had developed to such an extent by the time he became President that he frequently astonished naval Officers by the rapidity with which he grasped the essentials Of a naval problem and made a decision upon it. Fre quently he used to say to his advisers: Prepare me a paper on the subject. In these papers the essence of a highly technical matter had to be condensed both clearly and accurately so that he could study it at his leisure and give a decision on it. These reports he would put in his inside coat-pocket, and often he would say: I will take this home with me; come and see me about it to-morrow. One day when, as his naval aide, I had presented him with such a memorandum upon a matter of vital con cern to the navy, he looked at the paper for a few min utes, slowly turning over the pages and pausing a short time at each as though giving it a preliminary survey. Then, instead of putting it in his pocket, he laid it down and, in place of his usual formula, said abruptly: All right; what have you got to say about it? Italy and France at once agreed, and Russia was willing to submit the impasse to their judgment. But Germany refused.* The conference, the German Foreign Secretary thought, would amount to a court of arbitration. He thought a direct conference between the two foreign ministers directly concerned would be preferable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ordnance Department: On Beachhead and Battlefront In presenting this story of Ordnance in the overseas theaters, Mrs. Mayo has concentrated logically on Ordnance at the level of the army headquarters, for from this level munitions and fighting equipment flowed directly to the user. While giving some attention to all theaters involved in the global story of Ordnance administration, she has concentrated on the three main theaters as representative of the problems, the improvisations, the shortcomings, the achieve ments worldwide. From the dispatch of the first American observers to embattled Britain in 1941 to the last gunshots on Pacific islands in 1945, it is an exciting story as befits the vital contribution of the tools of war to success or failure in battle.
