Book Synopsis Visual Impairments by : National Research Council
Download or read book Visual Impairments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-17 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When children and adults apply for disability benefits and claim that a visual impairment has limited their ability to function, the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) is required to determine their eligibility. To ensure that these determinations are made fairly and consistently, SSA has developed criteria for eligibility and a process for assessing each claimant against the criteria. Visual Impairments: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits examines SSA's methods of determining disability for people with visual impairments, recommends changes that could be made now to improve the process and the outcomes, and identifies research needed to develop improved methods for the future. The report assesses tests of visual function, including visual acuity and visual fields whether visual impairments could be measured directly through visual task performance or other means of assessing disability. These other means include job analysis databases, which include information on the importance of vision to job tasks or skills, and measures of health-related quality of life, which take a person-centered approach to assessing visual function testing of infants and children, which differs in important ways from standard adult tests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Neuroemergency Clinical Trials, Second Edition, focuses on the practice of clinical trials in acute neuroscience populations, or what have been called neuroemergencies. Neuroemergencies are complex, life-threatening diseases and disorders, often with devastating consequences, including death or disability. The overall costs are staggering in terms of annual incidence and costs associated with treatment and survival, yet despite their significance as public health issues, there are few drugs and devices available for definitive treatment. The book focuses on novel therapies and the unique challenges their intended targets pose for the design and analysis of clinical trials. This volume provides neurologists, neuroscientists, and drug developers with a more complete understanding of the scientific and medical issues of relevance in designing and initiating clinical development plans for novel drugs intended for acute neuroscience populations. The editors provide the best understanding of the pitfalls associated with acute CNS drug development and the best information on how to approach and solve issues that have plagued drug development. - Presents a comprehensive overview on clinical trials and drug development challenges in acute neuroscience populations - Provides neurologists, neuroscientists and drug developers with a complete understanding of scientific and medical issues related to designing clinical trials - Edited by leaders in the field who have designed and managed over 50 neuroemergency clinical trials

Book Synopsis Visual Fields via the Visual Pathway by : Fiona Rowe
Download or read book Visual Fields via the Visual Pathway written by Fiona Rowe and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is a dynamic exploration of the relationship between the visual pathway and visual field impairments. Aimed at the practitioner or student of visual fields, the clinical focus of the book is oriented towards differential diagnosis and will assist the reader in identifying the site of a lesion. The emphasis is on detection and interpretation of visual field defects, rather than the background and psychophysics of visual field assessment. Discussion of the normal visual field is included for comparative purposes. The structure of the book traces the visual pathway anatomically from front to back, and is supplemented by information on methodology and programme choice.

Book Synopsis Visual Optics and the Optical Space Sense by : Hugh Davson
Download or read book Visual Optics and the Optical Space Sense written by Hugh Davson and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eye, Volume 4: Visual Optics and the Optical Space Sense provides a well-integrated and authoritative account of the physiology of the eye. The book is organized into two parts. Part I on visual optics begins with a discussion of the branches of optics and the basic principles of geometrical optics. This is followed by separate chapters on refraction at plane and spherical surfaces; the thin spherical lens in air; reflexion at plane and spherical surfaces; the astigmatic lens; aberrations of optical images; ametropia and its correction; and retinoscopy and ophthalmoscopy. Part II on the optical space sense includes discusses of objective and subjective space; spatial localization according to direction; perception of distance and of size; spatial localization through binocular vision; special topics in binocular spatial localization; and ocular dominance and binocular retinal rivalry. Whilst the emphasis has been on readability rather than exhaustiveness, the various accounts are sufficiently well documented to make the treatise valuable not only to teachers in physiology, psychology and ophthalmology, but also to research workers in all branches of ocular physiology.

Book Synopsis Emergent Techniques for Assessment of Visual Performance by : National Research Council
Download or read book Emergent Techniques for Assessment of Visual Performance written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent vision research has led to the emergence of new techniques that offer exciting potential for a more complete assessment of vision in clinical, industrial, and military settings. Emergent Techniques for Assessment of Visual Performance examines four areas of vision testing that offer potential for improved assessment of visual capability including: contrast sensitivity function, dark-focus of accommodation, dynamic visual acuity and dynamic depth tracking, and ambient and focal vision. In contrast to studies of accepted practices, this report focuses on emerging techniques that could help determine whether people have the vision necessary to do their jobs. In addition to examining some of these emerging techniques, the report identifies their usefulness in predicting performance on other visual and visual-motor tasks, and makes recommendations for future research. Emergent Techniques for Assessment of Visual Performance provides summary recommendations for research that will have significant value and policy implications for the next 5 to 10 years. The content and conclusions of this report can serve as a useful resource for those responsible for screening industrial and military visual function.
