Book excerpt: She escaped the Virginia Creeper, but her freedom comes with a price. When she recuperates from the tortures of the cabin, she learns she isn't alone. Something followed her. Something will not let her forget or flee the past. Cabin Fever, he called it. It was a game, a charade, something to entertain the virtual masses at a fatal price to participants. She believed the Creeper worked alone. The truth is far more disturbing. Even after she is home and surrounded by loved ones, the horrors don't stop. The Creeper was a puppet, a mere pawn in the ultimate game of human cruelty. It is up to her to locate the mastermind before it's too late.

During the holidays, Ellen, Tanya, and Sue want to go to the most Christmassy town in America, which Google says is Williamsburg, Virginia. While they're enjoying the magnificent light display at Busch Gardens and touring Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown, they sense someone following them. They quickly realize the creeper is not among the living. At first, their efforts to communicate with this unknown entity provide no answers. Little do they know that he will share his message on his own terms, in his own way. The unsettling truth he shares will rock their world, but it may give them a chance to bring peace to dozens of American Revolutionary War heroes who have been lost for centuries--that is, if they can convince the creeper that they are on his side.

His anticipation of the big event is only sharpened when his older brother claims there is a boogeyman “Creeper” prowling the streets of the mysterious neighborhood to the north, Virginia Terrace. Our pint-sized hero does his best not to believe his brother’s ridiculous story, but his active imagination keeps him wondering if there might not be some truth in the fantastic tale. In the end, he finds all the proof he needs as he loses his way all alone in Virginia Terrace on a moonlit Halloween night. The Virginia Terrace Creeper is sure to bring back Halloween memories for any reader who grew up trick-or-treating their way through baby-boomer America. Younger readers will find it slightly scary, funny, and fun -- an adventure tale to set the festive mood when October rolls around.

She claims to be an expatriate living in northeast Germany. Maybe she is; maybe she isn’t. I don’t know. I do know that this first novel arrives with a voice that is fully formed: mature, hilarious, terrifyingly intelligent, and wicked. The novel is about a bird-loving American couple that moves to Europe and becomes, basically, eco-terrorists. This is strange, and interesting, but in between is some writing about marriage, love, fidelity, Europe, and saving the earth that is as funny and as grown-up as anything I’ve read in years. And there are some jokes in here that a young Don DeLillo would kill to have written. I hope he doesn’t kill Nell Zink.” (Keith Gessen)

In an attempt to thoroughly cover this county in Virginia, Washington County Revisited explores the history of settlements that were once major community centers, including Lodi, Blackwell's Chapel, Rich Valley, Lindell, Bethel, Taylor's Valley, Hayter's Gap, Clinchburg, and Alvarado. Learn even more of the fascinating history surrounding the railroad towns of Damascus, Glade Spring, and Meadowview. Officially formed in 1776 from Fincastle County, the county was named for Gen. George Washington, who was then serving as commander in chief of the Continental Army. Washington County holds the distinction of being the first geographical region to be named for the first U.S. president. With more than 200 images, Washington County Revisited provides a unique visit to this rural region that once served as a gateway to the West along the Great Wagon Road and saw thousands of settlers and goods pass through to uncharted lands.

Book excerpt: West Jefferson did not exist until local entrepreneurs saw an opportunity to run the tracks from Whitetop Mountain in Virginia to North Carolina. In 1914, the Virginia Carolina Railroad came to Ashe County. Virgin timber grew in the mountains, luring the Hassenger Lumber Company into the area. Small sawmills and lumbering operations were located "up every holler," so the tracks were expanded into Elkland, known today as Todd. Until 1933, the train ran daily into the county, and communities such as Nella, Tuckerdale, Camrose, Bowie, Lansing, Warrensville, Berlin, and West Jefferson grew up along the tracks. The timber was gone by 1929, and when the Great Depression came, the Norfolk and Western Abingdon Line made the slow grinding haul up the mountain every week. During the 1950s and 1960s, the spectacular fall leaf displays made excursion trains popular for tourists. The last train ran in 1977, and the tracks in Ashe County were removed, leaving only a few vestiges to show the train was ever here.

Book excerpt: North Carolina artist Stephen Shoemaker and writer Janet Pittard have teamed up to present a selection of Shoemaker's paintings and drawings and the stories behind them. Known for his dramatic railroad paintings and scenes of life in the Blue Ridge mountains, Shoemaker shares the thought processes involved in creating his artwork, reveals his sources of inspiration (which often include events in local history or personal experiences) and points out clues and symbols appearing in his art. Together with 48 images, several of which were created especially for this publication, and occasional short poems by Pittard, the lively storytelling sheds light on an artist's development as well as the unique culture and history of the mountain region served by the train called the Virginia Creeper, which ran from Abingdon, Virginia, to Elkland, North Carolina (now Todd), from the early 1900s through the mid-1970s.
